Disrobed: An Inside Look at the Life and Work of a Federal Trial Judge

Review

Judge Block gives the reader an engaging, often humorous account of his life, as always, and a compelling introduction to the world of a Federal judge whose decisions are subject to plenty of public scrutiny but whose decision-making process remains a mystery for most Americans. PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON Founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and 42nd President of the United States --President Bill ClintonAt 78, Frederic Block is going strong. He still hears cases as a senior judge in Federal District Court for the Eastern District, which has jurisdiction over Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. He picked up modern Greek a few years ago. And now, he has written an engaging autobiography titled Disrobed: An Inside Look at the Life and Work of a Federal Trial Judge (Thomson Reuters Westlaw, $29.95). Despite the title, don t expect a bare-all book. Still, Judge Block offers a rare look behind decision-making on the federal bench. His stated goal was to make judicial proceedings accessible to the layman, and mercifully, without footnotes he largely succeeds. He has plenty of experience to draw on, including cases involving the Crown Heights riots, Kitty Genovese and Peter Gotti. And he has plenty to say. This is, after all, the same forthright jurist who warned prosecutors in a murder-for-hire case that seeking the death penalty was absurd, and who once worried aloud that he would have egg foo young on my face if a Chinese defendant skipped bail. About the Author

Fred Block practiced law for 34 years as a small-town lawyer before he was appointed to the federal district court bench in 1994 by President Bill Clinton. He is an Indiana University alumnus and received his law degree from Cornell Law School. Far removed from New York City he made his mark in private practice by successfully handling a number of pivotal national cases. As reflected in this book, Judge Block has a creative flair. A jazz musician, he previously showed off his artistic talent in an off-Broadway musical he co-authored - both music and lyrics - ;Professionally Speaking, and a host of country songs he wrote, before the bench beckoned.

So, how do you become a Federal judge and what do you do once you gain that lofty seat? Judge Block has written a book that will answer those questions and more. From the time he graduated law school through to his time on the bench, this book is the story of Judge Blocks legal career. The information on becoming a judge (how they are picked and approve ) was fascinating. In addition, the duties he outlines were also quite interesting. However, the first 150+/-pages, which deal with life as a small town judge on Long Island and his participation in local politics were a dull and slow read.Overall, the book has some excellent material that is very interesting, but it needs to be pruned by a good editor. Shaving 100 pages from the book would speed it up and make it a much better read.

It certainly didn't hurt that a former President of the United States endorsed the book. Couple that with a title that promised a great deal and I was hooked to buy it. As a trial lawyer, my biggest regret was that I had not had the opportunity to try a case in this Judge's courtroom. By the end of the book you get to know the Judge, and like him. Wise and Humble. Honest and open. Easy to read. Kind to his peers and to the parties who appeared before him in very thoughtful ways. The Judge shares insights you can't get without sitting on the bench, and offers innovative thinking about ways to improve the legal system, although he does not come right out and say that. His book will make me a better lawyer and a better citizen. The title offered a great deal, so I was ready to be dissapointed... but I wasn't. The Judge delivered what the title promised. I wish I had read this book 30 years ago, but alas, it hadn't been written. I am giving copies to several young lawyers so that they will have the book before lots of their career time passes. For someone interested in the Federal Legal system, the law and the politics, I highly recommend this book.

Judges, as I often tell lawyers in my seminars, are kinda like people. Disrobed proves the point. It reveals Judge Block, warts and all, as a human being and as a skilled jurist. He writes in several voices: casual and friendly in the early chapters, where he tells about his personal life; formal and scholarly but never pretentious or pedantic in the later chapters, where he discusses issues like drugs, guns, race riots, and terrorism. At times you feel you're hanging out with your friend the judge in a well furnished pub while he reveals his college escapades, his encounters with Nassau County political bosses, his family life, his dalliance with musical comedy in "Professionally Speaking." And then you feel you've been invited into his chambers where he hangs up his robe and tells you what he was thinking when he conducted some of the most interesting and difficult cases to come before the Federal Court for the Eastern District of New York. You get to know a savvy lawyer who became a skillful and knowledgeable judge, courteous and fair to the parties, humorous (but never at the expense of the litigants) and humble (but not without the confidence required of an effective judge). He reports without rancor the times he was called "Judge Blockhead" in the Daily News and vilified by a columnist in the New York Post. But then again, he seems to have fully deserved the way the Wall Street Journal described his performance in a case regarding Bear Stearns hedge fund managers: "He's Fair, Funny, and Frank." All in all a good read, particularly for young lawyers and new judges, but in fact for anyone interested in the inner workings of a judicial mind.

Judge Block includes facts about his personal life that diminish his stature. When it comes to the reality of judges favoring prosecutors, well you can read his memoir and learn how he rationalizes his bias. Sometimes he made good decisions in tough cases, but he does not appeal to me as a person. Pompous people do not appeal to me.Not all judges are puffed up with their self importance. Decades ago I was helping an abused ex-wife who went to court to again plead for the child support her X did not pay. She was afraid of her X. When she saw him in the hall, she became sick to her stomach and did not want to go into court. Just then the chief administrator of that entire court house stepped out of the elevator. I grabbed the young mom and pulled her over to him. We chatted a bit about how we spent the summer. As we returned to our bench in the hall, I told her not to tell her X what we discussed. Let him worry. That did make her feel better. The judge with whom we chatted not only was highly learned but humane. Unfortunately, he is rare.

Judge Block's life has been an interesting one and his book was just as interesting. Well written and filled with much humor as well as reporting serious events. A real inside look at the little known facts about federal court.

Great

Enjoyed the personal journey and case discussions very much.Enjoyed the look at different cultural considerations.being a lawyer some of the basic defining of legal concepts were a bit tedious but understandable.

This is an interesting read about Judge Block...from his beginning at school and becoming a lawyer thru his trials and tribulations building a law practice in suffolk county....being a democrat in a republican county and after many years being appointed to the federal bench...I found it fun to read about the different cases and how a judge looks at a case ....As each case stands on its own and how he handles each case in a different manner....It is a fun book to read

I went through the first 14 CDs and didn't have time for the last two for a three week trip to Japan. I have been to other countries and sometimes didn't know any words of the language and still got by fine so I did this just to enhance the experience. Well it turns out I don't know what I would have done without this course. I ended up using what I learned every single day and it really helped to communicate with those whose English was not so good. For example, asking how much a taxi cost, asking how much sake cost, asking if they have sake, asking what something is, asking where something is, arranging the time for dinner the next night at a ryokan, telling a train ticket agent when during the day we would be using each ticket, telling someone you understand what they said, that you only speak a little Japanese but aren't skilled yet, being able to say good morning, hello, good evening, thank you, and excuse me automatically without having to think about it. (and be able to understand when people talk to you). They did a good job predicting what phrases would be spoken to you. And I have noticed that with the CD method, your ears will pick up various words you already learned quite easily, which is new for me compared to the Spanish I learned in school. The repetition of phrases and they way they are mixed up help you remember them better. Also, a lot of the grammar (small filler words I'll call them) like wa and ga are not explained and instead intuitively used so you can pick up on how to use them without having to think of grammar while talking. I give them a lot of credit for being able to pull that off.I would have loved to had time to continue on to the next levels because there are a few things I still would have liked to be able to say. But if they loaded any more vocabulary into these CDs it would have been too much.Overall I was very glad to have purchased this and listened to all the CDs as it was very useful and effective.

I have listened to lessons 1 and 2 and I am already saying sentences in Japanese after two days and able to understand when I hear the speaker say a sentence. My co-workers are amazed. It is a beautiful language. I don't mind the drive to work anymore and I look forward to running errands so I can get in my car and learn more. People in the cars next to me must think I am talking to myself but I am getting over that. The lesson plan is highly engaging and the method works bottom line.

If your planning to take a trip to japan and want to learn some phrases, this is a great tool if your learning period is limited. But I feel that more could have been done to help the listener * truly* understand the language.First and foremost, A 5-7 page transcript should be included of all the conversations. This would help for several reasons-People would better remember if they could read along-people wouldnt say words wrong when they cant make out what the speaker is saying ( for example n and d can sound similar)- the user would better understand particles which would help them form their own sentences-The user would understand present and negative tenses betterWithout the transcript, a person will learn to speak well and have the context for several useful conversations. But they may not catch on to some things that would make more sense if there was a romajii translation. For example, nanika is to drink, ka at the end of this root word is present tense. However, nanimasen ka is a question, ka is not part of the word nanimasen which is negative present tense. A listener would be hard pressed to understand this if they had no prior japanese knowledge.

If you want to learn a language, Pimsleur is the best way. I've tried multiple languages: Danish, German, Italian, Korean, Spanish, Japanese, Thai, and Mandarin; using many learning systems such as: 'Rosetta Stone', 'Teach Yourself', 'Complete', free phone apps, paid phone apps, practicing with friends, 2 years Spanish in High School, falling asleep on top of books, or trying to receive it through telepathy. This is the BEST way to learn! You can learn and start speaking in Days! If you do Pimsleur (1Hr/Day) As well as use along with a great free app I found called Memrise (1Hr/Day), and you will be speaking and understanding desired basic language in 2 weeks or less.

Standing language course. First one I've ever bought that really did what it said. The learning techniques they described her excellent and well-thought-out and presented extremely well. I would highly recommend this to anyone is interested in learning Japanese

I bought this 4 months in advance of a business trip. I want to at least know a few things. With the 16 lessons included, I was able to hold decent conversations. The customers with whom I spent a week were amazed at how much I was able to speak and more specifically how well the words were articulated instead of butchered. I did not know what to expect when buying the course. But it worked out very well and I intend to upgrade to the full Japanese Comprehensive Level 1 in preparation for a trip next year. For the price, you can't beat what you will learn. On a side note, I also had not intention then or now of learning to read and write. This is for spoken language only. You will need something else if you intend to read and write Japanese.

I live in Japan and had a Japanese tutor and didn’t learn as much as I’m learning with this program. My whole family sits together and listens. Worth the money!

These babies had me speaking Japanese pretty well in no time! Ready to purchase the next set! Easy to follow & learn from, repetitive enough to keep you remembering what you've learned along the way without being super annoying about it!

I'm happy with my purchase for the price, but so you're aware - it's a small square book, like 4" by 4". Although it is small, there is quite a bit of detail, as it is printed on both sides of the page, but the 3D isn't much to write home about. The book is accordian style, so once it's out of it's holder/cover, it opens all the way. I won't get any of the other cities because of the size and lack of true pop-up "3D", but it has been fun to look at it and practice a French accent with my 4-year old.

Distinctly favored by an eleven-year-old who wants to visit Paris someday. Although she isn't ordinarily fond of books, the 3D aspect makes this one appealing. It's just the sort of thing that brings some fun to learning. Recommend!

Adorable pop-up book. Great gift.

Such a cute, small book. I almost bought one at the Arc de Triomphe, but didn't. I love this little reminder of my time spent in Paris!

Love it - correlates very well with Fodor's.

This is cute, much smaller than I envisioned so definitely a not a keepsake. Now that I've looked at it, I'll likely pass it on to one of my Francophile friends.

Granddaughter who loves Paris, just loves the book. She has it out on her dresser and reverses it weekly.

Very small, like a mini book, but super detailed pop-ups that make a wonderful gift or keepsake.

Prisoner of Tehran: A Memoir, by Marina Nemat

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Nemat tells of her harrowing experience as a young Iranian girl at the start of the Islamic revolution. In January 1982, the 16-year-old student activist was arrested, jailed in Tehran's infamous Evin prison, tortured and sentenced to death. Ali, one of her interrogators, intervened moments before her execution, having used family connections with Ayatollah Khomeini himself to reduce her sentence to life in prison. The price: she would convert to Islam (she was Christian) and marry him, or he would see to it that her family and her boyfriend, Andre, were jailed or even killed. She remained a political prisoner for two years. Nemat's engaging memoir is rich with complex characters—loved ones lost on both sides of this bloody conflict. Ali, the man who rapes and subjugates her, also saves her life several times—he is assassinated by his own subordinates. His family embraces Nemat with more affection and acceptance than her own, even fighting for her release after his death. Nemat returns home to feel a stranger: "They were terrified of the pain and horror of my past," she writes. She buries her memories for years, eventually escaping to Canada to begin a new life with Andre. Nemat offers her arresting, heartbreaking story of forgiveness, hope and enduring love—a voice for the untold scores silenced by Iran's revolution. From Booklist

*Starred Review* In Tehran in the early 1980s, after she leads a strike in high school to get her math teacher to teach calculus not politics, Marina, 16, a practicing Catholic, is locked up for two years and tortured with her school friends in the Ayatollah Khomeini's notorious Evin political prison. She is saved from execution by an interrogator, Ali, who wants to marry her and threatens to hurt her family and Catholic boyfriend, Andre, if she refuses. Forced to convert to Islam, she becomes Ali's wife; then he is assassinated by political rivals, and she rejoins her family and marries Andre. They immigrate to Canada in 1991. For more than 20 years, secure in her middle-class life, she keeps silent, until she writes this unforgettable memoir. Haunted by her lost friends and by her betrayal of them, Nemat tells her story without messages and with no sense of heroism. The quiet, direct narrative moves back and forth from Toronto to Nemat's childhood under the shah's brutal regime and, later, during the terror under Khomeini. Despite the rabid politics and terrifying drama, the most memorable aspect of the story is the portrait of Ali, Nemat's savior, in love with her, so kind to her--Does he kill people when he goes off to work in the prison each day? Her comment that she wishes "the world were a simple place where people were either good or evil" is as haunting as her guilt and love. When she asks Andre to forgive her long silence, he asks her to forgive his not asking. Hazel RochmanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This is a vivid description of how a normal teenager's life was overturned by the Islamic revolution in Iran. The descriptions are vivid and make it easy to picture how, before the revolution, Marina's concerns were her grades, her social life, swimming, clothes, minor conflicts with her parents...a life similar to that of the average American teenager. Like many American teens, she went to church and had an active prayer life. Not super holy, but a pretty good kid. The title gives away that she went from that life to prison, misery and choices no teenager should have to face.I followed the revolution in Iran in the news back when it was happening, but never could imagine how horrible things got for the average person there. I have an Iranian friend who fled Iran with nothing more than her husband, her daughter, and a couple of suitcases, leaving house and bank accounts behind. They are Zoroastrian, and they felt that they had no future in Iran. Although they had to start over in the United States with nothing, they are now doing much better than they would have been had they stayed.Although most Iranians were better off under the Shah, Marina doesn't gloss over the abuses carried out under his dictatorship. She doesn't paint Muslims as all bad. There were Iranian Muslims who were tolerant of the Zoroastrians, Christians, Jews, and atheists living in their country. Unfortunately, these moderates were not the people who ended up in power. Marina's book illustrates clearly the suffering that can result from a government based on a religion. I am grateful for the First Amendment and hope this book will inspire everyone who reads it to be diligent in guarding against encroachments against religious freedom.

The term good would not do justice to my opinions of this book. This is not to say that I agree with all of the author's opinions on all matters, but this well-written account of faith, suffering, and the price of totalitarianism is on the whole superb. Marina is thankfully a talented written and usully manages to keep even the more mundane aspects of growing up in Iran during the Shah's reign interesting. Essentially the story of her arrest, imprisonment, interrogation (with torture in at least one instance), near execution, and an essentially forced relationship with a guard is alternated with her childhood and experience of the 1979 Revolution. The interrogator Ali Moosavi is a fascinating character in the book. In some ways he is one of the most sinister characters but deep down he has numerous good qualities. Marina confesses that she very understandably still doesn't know how to feel for this man who combined ruthlessness with idealism. From one angle he cruelly convinced her to temporarily betray her Christian faith and slept with her against her will. On the other side he twice saved her life including the second time as his final actions on earth. He seemed to have the potential to change right at the moment when he himself became the victim of the regime he had once suffered and fought for(he not only fought the Iraqis but had himself been tortured earlier by the Shah's men). Despite all the pain and suffering from totalitarianism and war, Nemat herself retains a dignified humility and care for other human beings and thankfully does have a relatively happy ending in the book by emmigrating to Canada with her husband and children. The book also features an interview with the author that is rather interesting. If there is one criticism of the book it is that I wish the author had focused more on the return to her Christian faith and how her experiences had worked to shape her beliefs. This is discussed some but I felt there may have been so much more which could have been contemplated here.overall, i highly recommend the book.P.S.This work does bring up a number of issues. First of all Marina Nemat was faced with criticism from a number of former political prisoners about some details of the book. I can't of course know every single detail in the work was accurate; the author herself admits that time has obscurred some details. It is also worth mentioning that other former iranian political prisoners responded to the attacks by supporting Nemat.on a larger scale the book should bring to mind three important realities.1. Political oppression and torture still occurs in Iran though argueably not to the level as under Khomenini (less mass executions anyway).2. Christian minorities (and other religious minorities) suffer oppression and persecution in vast swathes of the Middle East. This often violent persecution in of course not limited to iran but also includes U.S. allies such as Saudi Arabia which is in truth even worse than the Iranians in some respects.3. There are a surprising number of torture victims living in the West from a whole range of countries. Before writing the book, Nemat worked at a Swiss Chalet restaurant and was living a middle class Canadian life with her husband and children. In short, this reality should give us some pause about the possible experiences of others we may run into. Sometimes it is the most seemingly normal of people who have lived through the nightmare of totalitarianism (whether religious or atheistic or neither).

The world is full of examples of phoenixes rising from the ashes, but we rarely know of these hidden heroes who have faced hardship beyond imagining and survived. It is in the hearing of such stories that we begin to understand the common tendency of human beings, bent on a "heroic", subtle revenge that is easily portrayed as "fixing the system", to perpetrate violence, condone personal vendettas, and continue the cycle of unforgiveness.Nemat's story is just one of many--women who have learned throughout time the destructive mentalities of political systems used to control people--control driven by fear clothed in religious fervor. What makes this story all the more surprising is the age of these political prisoners...mere children! This generation--from abortion to Africa's childrens armies to Nemat's schoolmates--paints a devastating portrait of what we have created in the minds of our people. The vulnerable are now our manipulated, our murdered, our punching bags for the frustrations of our lives. No matter how progressed we think we have become, indeed we have only become worse. Worse because we deny, worse because we have learned to call bad good and good bad, worse because indeed we no longer know what good is at all.
