I like all the photos and descriptions. It's a great book to give you some ideas. Even if the places aren't what everyone would enjoy, I think it could inspire you to travel and also, just take care of yourself when times are hard. If you need a 'mental vacation' just pick this book up!

I was looking for inspiration, but the destinations lacked diversity. I would have been better off saving the money and doing a web search.

This book is super helpful as a Travel Agent trying to decide the best destination to send clients that have no idea where they want to go. Love the book!

I prre-ordered this book from Amazon and it arrived yesterday! What an amazingly different travel book. It could be used as a coffee table book or one you stick in your bag when you travel. It is that beautiful. I read most of the book last night even though it is not meant to be a sit down and read the whole thing book. Travel Therapy was so well written you just kept going into chapters that had nothing to do with what you were going thru in life at the moment. The book seems to be geared towards finding what you are going through in life right now and then choosing that chapter of the book to find some very exciting solutions. Well, I couldn't stop reading. It was such an easy user friendly book. There are little suitcases to tell you how strenuous the trips are and a quiz at the begining of each chapter to find out which of the three journeys you should take, based on where you are in life and what you might need to do to get a travel therapy 'fix'.I would highly reccommend this book to everyone, family, couples, singles. And read the whole book! It's all good. Thanks Travel Therapy and Amazon for the great price and quick delivery.Leaves you wanting more...be careful!

Flipping through the pages made me feel like I was really in some of these places. The interesting chapter to me was Pay it Forward, it seems like a great way to give back!On the other side of the coin I can really relate to going to some of the places in the chapter called The Big Chill. I'm ready to head to the Florida Keys today!

I love this book for what it tells you - whatever you are going through in life it has the right travel therapy and destination to go - what a great concept. I can't believe that this was not written before. Love the idea and can't wait to try it out -Really cool...thanks Ms. Schaler.

Loved the pictures. What an artistic approach to a travel book. The girlfriend getaway really enticed me! Take the Travel Therapy quiz for yourself, there is sure to be a diagnosis. Travel Therapy does have you covered on travel ideas.

I love this book. It's a great coffee table book filled with lots of beautiful pictures of places far, far away. But its not all style and no substance, Travel Therapy is filled with useful information to help you plan your next trip. Keep it on hand for life's little surprises, you never know when you're going to need to get away for some sanity.

A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER A New York Times Top 100 Notable Book of 2018 A Time Magazine Best Book for Summer A Costco “Pennie’s Pick” Named a “Must Read” by Bustle, BookPage, Garden & Gun, Parade One of iBooks’ “Summer’s Most Anticipated Books” An Amazon “Best Book of the Month”“Exhilarating...vibrant...O’Brien’s prose reverberates with fiery crashes, then stings with the tragedy of lives lost in the cockpit and sometimes, equally heartbreaking, on the ground.”—New York Times Book Review “Keith O’Brien has brought these women—mostly long-hidden and forgotten—back into the light where they belong. And he’s done it with grace, sensitivity and a cinematic eye for detail that makes "Fly Girls" both exhilarating and heartbreaking.” —USA Today“Mr. O’Brien, a former reporter for the Boston Globe working in the tradition of ‘Hidden Figures’ and ‘The Girls of Atomic City,’ has recovered a fascinating chapter not just in feminism and aviation but in 20th-century American history.” —Wall Street Journal “A riveting account that puts us in the cockpit with Amelia Earhart and other brave women who took to the skies in the unreliable flying machines of the ’20s and ’30s.” —People Magazine “Let’s call it the Hidden Figures rule: If there’s a part of the past you thought was exclusively male, you’re probably wrong. Case in point are these stories of Amelia Earhart and other female pilots who fought to fly.”—Time “This book ends like a perfect landing, taking its place in readers’ hearts just like the women at its core took their place in history.”—The Coil   “Keith O’Brien’s spectacularly detailed Fly Girls [recreates] a world that can still inspire us today.”—BookPage   “[An] engrossing mix of group biography and technology history.”—Nature    “[A] page-turner that will make you appreciate just how soaring the spirit of women has always been.”—MindBodyGreen"Fly Girls is an inspiring and insightful story of five courageous women who risked their lives and made a place for women in the male-dominated field of aviation. Keith O’Brien has shone a light on the forgotten struggle of women for equality as well as the little-known aspect of aviation history. Fly Girls is as much about the courageous female pilots as it is about the history of aviation. This meticulously researched and brilliantly written book brings those brave aviators to life. Keith O’Brien has filled the holes in scholarship about women’s struggle and aviation." —Washington Book Review“O'Brien details in crisp and engaging writing how his subjects came to love aviation, along with their struggles and victories with flying, the rampant sexism they experienced, and the hard choices they faced regarding work and family. Highly recommended for readers with an interest in aviation history, women's history, cultural history, and 20th-century history.” — Library Journal, STARRED review “Journalist O’Brien tells the exciting story of aviators who, though they did not break the aviation industry’s glass ceiling, put a large crack in it....This fast-paced, meticulously researched history will appeal to a wide audience both as an entertaining tale of bravery and as an insightful look at early aviation.” —Publishers Weekly   “A vivid, suspenseful story of women determined to defy gravity—and men—to fulfill their lofty dreams.” —Kirkus Reviews “Air races captivated the nation during the golden age of aviation in the 1920s and 1930s, and few participants drew more attention than the female pilots who challenged the male-dominated field. O’Brien focuses on five of those women...The narrative flows easily....as O’Brien shifts between them, showing their competitive spirit and camaraderie even in the face of the trying circumstances of the first Women’s Air Derby in 1929.” —Booklist “This is more than history; it is a powerful story for our times. This book has it all: adventure, tragedy, and heroes who overcame cruel prejudice to rule the air. Fly Girls reads like a heart-stopping novel, but this story is all true—and thoroughly inspiring.” —Karen Abbott, author of Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy “Newspapers loved them, of course: lady fliers! But men didn’t want them in their races. Other forces conspired against them too. Storms loomed. Planes crashed and burned. But no challenge could stop the remarkable community of female pilots at the core of Fly Girls. During the golden age of flight, they fought for the chance to race – and won. This is a thrilling story of courage, competition, skill, and triumph.” —Liza Mundy, author of Code Girls “America’s past is full of remarkable women who have been unjustly forgotten. Fly Girls gives its heroines their due at last. It is a thrilling and important story, superbly told.” —David Maraniss, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Once in a Great City “At the dawn of aviation, when every flight was a test of courage, a remarkable band of female pilots proved that a woman’s place is in the sky – or anywhere else she wants to be. This book is a soaring tribute to forgotten American heroes, filled with white-knuckle thrills and gut-wrenching emotion. It’ll take your breath away.” —Mitchell Zuckoff, author of 13 Hours   “If you liked The Boys in the Boat or Unbroken, you’ll love Fly Girls. This story—carefully researched and expertly written—offers an irresistible cast of characters and high-octane drama. Buckle up; you’re in for a hell of a ride.” —Jonathan Eig, author of Ali

This is a subject, and specific individuals, that have not been given the attention they deserve. I was hoping this book would paint a picture of the true challenges they faced and the things they accomplished in the face of determined public opposition and outright sabotage, in some instances. I was first surprised that the author would use the same title as a much better book "Fly Girls" about the WASPs of World War II. Things got worse when I started reading the book. For a technical subject such as aviation, one would have thought that the author would have had someone with technical knowledge do at least a quick bit of proofreading. Somehow airplanes became "airships." Huh? Airships are dirigibles or blimps. The repeat of that error became painful. Single-engine airplanes were described as having throttles, plural, while multi-engine airplane had a throttle, singular. Technical details regarding aircraft and what goes on in flight were repeatedly wrong - yet the author stressed the importance of the fact that each of those incredible pilots spent an exhaustive amount of time assuring that they didn't miss any technical details when flying. If only the author had done the same. While it moved the story along, a fair amount of the details about the pilots' lives read a bit like a costume drama.Much is made of Louise Thaden's husband developing an all-metal airplane, as if he were somehow cutting edge. He wasn't even close - the Germans were making all-metal transports in World War I and Henry Ford's captive company, Stout, was making them by the mid-1920s.The author repeated the mistaken claim that Richard Byrd was the first to fly over the north pole. That claim was debunked years ago and shouldn't have been in a well-researched book.It might have helped to describe some of the airplanes flown by the women more carefully as some of them were simply awful, requiring a huge amount of skill to fly, and land, safely. Most of the airplanes designed in the 1920s and early 1930s had marginal or worse stability in various axes, lousy control harmony and systems (fuel, electrical, hydraulic) that could be confusing, counter-intuitive and just plain dangerous to a pilot who did not fully understand the details. Such details alone would help to describe just how great the pilots who flew those airplanes great distances (in often hideous weather when weather forecasting was essentially nonexistent) truly were. For someone unfamiliar with the incredible women portrayed in this book, it's a good place to start to learn about them. I'm hoping someone will eventually do a definitive book on those great women. I'm just disappointed I spent the money on this one.

Really, REALLY enjoyed the book. Over the years, I've come to learn snippets of each, but this book has everything in one place. Each of their stories are fascinating but in this book, Mr. O'Brien has spent the time to chronicle much more of the details of the girls that helped to bring aviation into everyone's life. Their stories seem complete .... the accomplishments, the setbacks and in a few cases, the despair each endured in their individual struggle to be recognized as a credible contributor. I'm certain you will enjoy this book if aviation is of interest.

An amazing, heart-pounding, page-turning, tear-jerking true story. Keith O’Brien’s extensive research and wonderful writing has brought these forgotten women (and men) back to life. Many of us know a bit about Amelia Earhart, but can we name any other pioneering aviators (man or woman) from this age? Get to know the incredible women who fought to fly and to gain respect - you won’t be able to put this down and you will miss them when you finish the book!

And 5 stars beyond those! This book is a well researched and indexed history of a forgotten battle for women’s rights. Not only a great read, I found it hard to put down. So glad I decided to read it.

Read for book club. Was recommended by Parade Magazine. This book was written in reporter writing style meaning all overall details were given even if the details did not add to the story; therefore although this is a short book, under 200 pages, it was a hard read. When this book was reviewed by our book club, the majority of our members agreed. I would not recommend this book.

A classic cover the pretty ones and ignore everyone else treatment of an important piece of history. Pancho Barnes gets one sentence in this book. Other important female aviators of the day are similarly ignored of given no treatment in this lazy book. There are better books about this event.

This book was very enjoyable and so well researched. I never knew there were so many women who were willing to attempt the things that these pilots dared to do! Very courageous and completely in love with flying.

This book🙏🏻👏🏻❤️ Such a fascinating read of a story so needing to be told! These women were true pioneers and O’Brien does a masterful job of bringing them to life and securing their place in history. An absolute must read.

Intimacies, by Leo Bersani Adam Phillips

Review

“In this fascinating and disturbing book, two writers with prose styles and intellectual styles that are at once famously identifiable and intimately personal celebrate the possibility of relationships that defy identity and undo personality. Braiding together brilliant psychoanalytic reflections on fiction and film, on the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and the invasion of Iraq, on suicidally unsafe sex and Socrates’ theory of love, Bersani and Phillips at once dream of shattering the ego and, in their own distinct voices, display its miraculous, tragicomic persistence.” (Stephen Greenblatt, author of Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare 2008-01-11)“This tremendous accomplishment showcases the talents of two agile, wonderfully erudite minds. As they weigh our desire for intimacy and explain why it so often fails, Bersani and Phillips grapple with issues as weighty as aggression and state-sanctioned violence. Every facet of the subject is handled with impressive care and intelligence. Intimacies is often lyrical, even occasionally elegiac, but for a book about impersonal narcissism I found it surprisingly poignant, personal, and affecting.” (Christopher Lane, author of Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness 2008-04-11)“Intimacies is a very incisive and gentle exchange between two writers who have thought and rethought psychoanalysis in powerful terms for contemporary culture. The dialogue enacts the kind of relationality it seeks to know, moving beyond the traditional narcissism of authorship, probing the important difference between being a psychological subject and finding a way to be present to another person. Psychoanalysis is moved beyond the theory of the ego and developmental norms, returned to primary questions of how and why pleasure is often at odds with self-preservation, and how such enduring tensions are presented in visual media, sexual practice, dialogue, and clinical exchange. Practiced here is an intimacy that explores the regions of impersonal co-existence where losing the self expands the capacity to love. This a beautifully crafted book, one that underscores how the social life of the psyche is a matter of risk, wager, suspense, excitation, bodies, talk, and all manner of things both dangerous and sustaining.”Judith Butler, author of Undoing Gender (Judith Butler 2008-04-11)

This collaborative effort by Leo Bersani and Adam Phillips extends the theoretical work of the former in important ways. Those familiar with Bersani will know that he is one of the most eloquent voices in queer theory, psychoanalysis, and the history of aesthetics writing today. This pithy volume, running at exactly 125pp., presents three chapters written by Bersani and a fourth by Phillips. Taken together, Bersani's contributions draw from Freud and Lacan to theorize intimacy beyond the self-satisfying pleasures of self-/ego-preservation; Phillips, in turn, assesses Bersani's work in view of what it might mean to forge "impersonal relationalities" in our world. It should be noted that Bersani is building on previous work here: that is, it takes some familiarity with the psychoanalytic literature in order to appreciate fully the force of his critique. Moreover, Bersani's prose is characteristically dense, perhaps even more so in a book so short in length (note that the margins are wide and the 12-point font is easy on the eyes) yet so powerful in theoretical acumen. With those caveats, readers might take up *Intimacies* for advanced study in: aesthetics (Chapter 1, on Henry James's *The Beast in the Jungle* and the French film *Intimate Strangers*); queer theory (Chapter 2, on the culture of barebacking); and social theory (Chapter 3, on the problem of "evil" in our contemporary moment). While Chapters 1 and 3 cover familiar terrain for longstanding readers of Bersani, Chapter 2, I found, opens up new directions for theorizing sexuality. In his account of barebacking, Bersani turns to "pre-modern" expressions of religious piety -- namely the Quietist practice of "pure love" -- to explain how the putative "self-destructiveness" of unprotected gay male sex bespeaks something more radical: the ascetic discipline of ego-indifference, a kind of "pure" impersonality. Without "celebrating" barebacking as such, Bersani wants to acknowledge that there is something valuable in its mode of relating to others precisely through "self-divestiture."Chapter 2 is the most insightful, and original, work in queer theory I've read since the much-debated turn to "gay shame" took place in the field with the publication of Lee Edelman's *No Future*. I find Bersani here to be a more convincing theorist of the limits of relationality than Edelman. I also think his attempt to craft a theory of love (in Chapter 3) through the notion of "impersonal narcissism" is more supple and engaging than Edelman's repetitive missives against heteronormative reproductivity. The one reservation I have about this book is that the self-described "dialogue" between Bersani and Phillips isn't executed to great effect. Phillips is an able respondent to Bersani, yet I couldn't shake the feeling that their exchange was a little uneven. After following Bersani patiently construct his theoretical lattice from Chapters 1 through 3, I found Phillips's response to be a bit of a distraction, if not an "anticlimax." No doubt Bersani would have fun with my feeling of being let down (i.e., "Could it have been any other way?"). Still, I think the book could have been stronger as a monograph, with Bersani composing a longer Conclusion and integrating certain of Phillips's points into the text of his critique.A final note: Bersani bases much of his discussion of barebacking on Tim Dean's research on the topic. Dean has just published his book on barebacking, titled *Unlimited Intimacy*, with the University of Chicago Press. I haven't read this book yet, but I imagine it will prove a useful analogue to *Intimacies*.

A friend asked me to find this book for her - no problem, item exactly as described. Thanks!

Leo Bersani, with some interspersed comment by Adam Phillips, continues his theme of the shattering of the traditional psychoanalytic ego in limit experiences. Bersani has been developing this line of thought for a number of years and presents it with an always interesting combination of erudition (here an analysis of Henry James' "Beast in the Jungle") with contemporary gay issues (here "barebacking").

Maybe this is a collection of other research in some ways but it is wonderfully detailed and if you were not familiar with a lot of the goings on of the families here it is a brilliant gossip session. A lot of research has gone into it and it is a racy, largely truthful reminder that rich people were the same in older times as today. There seems a little too much of the Kennedy family perhaps to pad out the book but this is a top rated light read well written , racey and pacey

Palm Beach Babylon is about the island in Florida where the rich and famous live and vacation. The book mentions the island’s founder Henry Flagler – establishing Palm Beach in 1894 for the ‘recuperative powers of Florida’s sunshine’ – as well as its guests, visitors, and residents: Isadora Duncan, Gloria Swanson, Marjorie Merriweather Post, the Kennedys, Larry Flynt, John Lennon, Estee Lauder, Donald Trump, the Dodges, Helmsleys, Pulitzers, Vanderbilts, Mizners, and Madoffs – to name a few.The book is more than tales of sex, drugs, and parties – or of mansions and El Mirasol. There is history behind the stories. Keeping to a rough chronological order, the book is separated into people and themes, rather than a strict timeline, which is an easy and orderly way to read about Palm Beach’s history of residents. For example, 60-year-old Robert Young’s railroad disaster of 1958 (and the years that led to his disaster), followed by the Kennedys in the 1960s, with the inauguration of John F Kennedy as America’s 35th president in 1961. An interesting chapter is about John Lennon’s purchase of property in Palm Beach in 1980 – the first worldwide acclaimed musician to reside there. The authors write of Lennon’s reunion at Palm Beach with his son Julian after 16 years apart. The book presents a novel way of defining part of America’s history in terms of it business people and entrepreneurs, celebrities and politicians, and the way they live in the tropical Florida haven of the rich and famous.

Palm Beach Scandallion. This was okay. I bought as I live in one of the 10 000 Palm Beaches around the world and thought it would be fun to read on a week away. It was. It is easy to read. Made me chuckle out loud in a few places. It taught me nothing, well the history of the place was interesting the chapter at the start. It reaffirmed that money does not buy: sense, taste, intelligence, humour, manners, patience or morals. Pity. I hope the book makes the writers a few dollars - because there was the tiniest twinge of envy every now and then throughout the book. It needed to be written, a more history based one would have been nice but not as juicy! Also, the bane of my life, there were a few editing problems - which always irks me. I pay money to read a book, make sure it is at least spell checked and edited....Read it on the beach, preferably a Palm Beach, the Palm Beach if you can - and the ultimate? Add a new chapter.

If you're familiar with Palm Beach then you know that some of these stories were "just the beginning" - a LOT has transpired since this book was written -be sure to read the afterward . Many of these people have had entire books written about them if your interested.

excellent read. very surprising but not entirely unexpected stories. it makes one wonder if money makes a person do strange things or if the personality is the drive to make the money.

Dishy book about the rich folks.

I highly recommend especially since Trump owns part of historyI enjoyed the photo and learning about the sad fortunes of our historical figures that blazed the trail for our country’s growth!

Top ten book of 2017! Scintillating peek into the lives of the rich and vapid. FeltLike I was there in Palm Beach witnessing the shenanigans. A top notch page turner.
