From School Library Journal

Gr 3–6—Middle child and soon-to-be middle schooler Abbie Wu is in major need of crisis control. Her fear and anxiety have her constantly freaking out, especially when it comes to sixth grade. Abbie's mom doesn't understand why she's stressed, and her perfect siblings aren't helping the situation, either. Because Abbie couldn't decide on an elective class, she's been assigned to study hall. Her two best friends actually enjoy school and have found activities they're passionate about. Not having a "Thing" like everyone else is making Abbie feel left behind. The only part of school she's looking forward to is the cafeteria lunches, which include pizza, fries, and cookies. When Abbie discovers that sixth graders are forbidden from eating those foods, she organizes an underground lunch exchange. The success of her food rebellion gives Abbie the confidence to find her voice and, ultimately, her "Thing." Abbie's phobias and worries are charmingly depicted in this heavily illustrated hybrid novel. The humorous, doodlelike artwork makes her struggles entertaining and relatable. VERDICT Share this title with fans of Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series and anyone who will appreciate rooting for a witty underdog.—Sophie Kenney, Glencoe Public Library, IL

★ “Debut author Vivat writes and illustrates a funny, neurotic, and delightful girl with a heart as big as her worries. The extensively illustrated novel packs a punch with fresh, lively pencil-and-ink drawings and lettering that set each mood perfectly.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“This one is a great gift for an elementary school grad.” (cited as 1 of “10 Next Reads for Kids Who Love Raina Telgemeier”) (Brightly)“Vivat’s funny, quick-moving debut skips along even faster thanks to the endearing doodles that appear throughout, punctuating Abbie’s travails with chibi-esque emotional outbursts featuring flailing limbs, speed lines, and exaggerated typography.” (Publishers Weekly)“Abbie’s phobias and worries are charmingly depicted in this heavily illustrated hybrid novel....share this title with fans of Jeff Kinney’s “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series and anyone who will appreciate rooting for a witty underdog.” (School Library Journal)“Newcomer Vivat’s novel, with its hyperbolic text and superabundant adrenaline-filled cartoon drawings...has plenty of appeal, but it’s the clever plot that gives the story depth.” (The Horn Book)“Honest, sweet, and laugh-out-loud funny.” (Brightly)“Abbie’s wisecracks and observations, coupled with her remarkable gift for hyperbole, will keep readers laughing, while her challenges will have them relating. It’s an amusing romp perfect for those with their own concerns about the middles.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)“Debut author Vivat’s generously interspersed, animated cartoon illustrations incorporate abundant witty touches and commentary and often extend the main text...” (Booklist Online)

It doesn't matter if you were in middle school over a million years ago (you'll get why I said that when you read the book), or only a few years ago, there's something about Abbie Wu that you'll love. She'll make you laugh about the things you thought were earth shattering when you were in MS, and if you're just entering MS, than this book is most definitely for you! Abbie will make you feel like you're not alone. Trust me, her story is packed with humor, truth, and maybe a little advice.Abbie Wu isn't the only thing I loved about this book. I not only loved the way Vivat wrote her debut book, I absolutely love Vivat's sketches. This book is fabulous! I wish I had, had Abbie Wu's story when I was entering middle school. I can't wait for my middle schooler to read it.

My 6th Grade daughter devoured this book. It came on a Friday afternoon and she was done on Sunday afternoon. I heard the author interviewed on NPR and bought it on the fly. It is loaded with pics, she's not a speed reader !! It's put together like a "diary of a wimpy kids" book. Well done from what she says.

My daughter has anxiety. I bought this for her not realizing it was geared towards children entering middle school, she's already in the 7th grade. After looking through it I decided to give it to her anyway because it's light hearted and funny and definitely applies to some of the things that cause her stress. It's a total winner. I bought her the second book as a result. I definitely recommend.

Bought for a Picky 10 year old. She has already indicated she wants to read more in this series. Anything to get her reading. It is fun and easy for her to relate to the characters. She described it as almost a Diary for Wimpy kids for girls (but she liked it better than the Dork Diaries).

I heard the author on NPR and that night bought it for my daughter who is 10. She loved it, read in in 2 days. I hope this author does another book soon.

My 11 year old adores this book. I havent read it but ahe told me there's nothing objectionable if you're the type that worries. She said it's like it's right out of her mind.

My daughter enjoyed this book, she's in 4th grade so it was a good precursor to middle school. She used it for a report and while helping with the preparations, the graphics really caught my attention, I cant wait to read it myself.

My son read the first one and loved it.....of course had to get the second and he loved it just as much. Great book!

Great book. Got it for my niece and she HATES reading with a passion! My niece cant wait for the second book. She read the book in two days!

Review

Praise for Daughter of the Siren Queen:"This lady Jack Sparrow is back, and she's fiercer and wittier than ever!" ―Elly Blake, New York Times bestselling author of Frostblood"Levenseller is just as much a siren as her protagonist―her words will pull you in, and there's no escaping them." ―Charlie N. Holmberg, author of The Paper Magician Series."Levenseller comes into her own in this sequel to Daughter of the Pirate King (2017), penning an argh-worthy blend of pirate derring-do and lively romance. . . . Deadly sirens join the ranks of strong, smart females in this book, giving it a definite feminist edge." ―Booklist"The author has yet again captured the adventure, romance, and ruthless ways of the high seas in this sequel to Daughter of the Pirate King. . . . This fast-moving adventure with strong female characters would be great for those who love a good pirate story, a touch of romance, and action-packed sword fighting." ―School Library JournalPraise for Daughter of the Pirate King:"Levenseller has created a formidable female character who can take care of herself as she makes some hard decisions. Hand to skilled readers seeking true adventure with swashbuckling, sword fighting, and a great problem-solving heroine." ―School Library Journal"Readers should rejoice, because we now have a lady Jack Sparrow on our hands! Daughter of the Pirate King kidnapped my interest from the first chapter and never let it go! It's a superior debut with a deeply entangled romance, a fearsome heroine not to be trifled with, a clever hero that you seriously want to trifle with, and a plot twist that makes a rollercoaster seem stable. With a cunning plot, robust writing, and complicated characters, any reader will enjoy being in Levenseller's capable hands. Definitely for fans of Pirates of the Caribbean, fierce heroines, slow-burning romances, and adventures that can turn sour in the space of a gasp." ―Anna Banks, author of the New York Times Bestseller Of Triton

Probably more of a 3.5, but I'm rounding up because it was still fun for the most part!Daughter of the Siren Queen takes place two months after the ending to the last one with Alosa and her crew finally getting the last piece of the map to the island of sirens- and a massive treasure. While Alosa takes the man who had her prisoner captive, he tells a secret that her father has kept for years. Soon Alosa and her crew are in a race with the entire pirate fleet to get to the treasure first. She'll have to learn how to control her powers while putting up with Riden, who she is might have feelings for.For the most part I did really enjoy this book! It's a swashbuckling adventure that never slows down with a badass female pirate captain and her almost all female crew on the high seas. Alosa also has some interesting powers that she can not control. That is where lies the start of my major issue in this book: she can't seem to control her powers without the help of a man. But that is probably just my personal preference on it.The romance in this book? It's downright awful. While I enjoyed them together in the first book, this time it was 98% of Alosa actually abusing Riden and being mean to him throughout while he pretty much takes it, instead of ever fighting her back. Or being the interesting pirate he could have been. He is her whipping boy to yell at when things go wrong or to throw punches while he takes whatever. It had already been said that she is stronger than a normal woman so, that's a big no from me.As for that, I didn't have any other issues. Alosa was a strong heroine and while she was kind of bad, I loved seeing her interact with her crew, and I wouldn't mind seeing more adventures from them. It was very entertaining! Plus swordfighting, siren magic, and sailing to treasure just tickled my Pirates of the Caribbean loving heart.

Overall, I did enjoy this book, but nowhere near how I felt about the first one, which I absolutely loved. It took me a little bit to get into it and I had a hard time keeping the new names straight of Alosa’s crew members. I’m not sure if there were just too many new ones thrown at you at once or if it was because it had been a few months since I had read the first one. There wasn’t anything especially wrong with the story, so I’m just not exactly sure why this one didn’t grab my attention like the first one did. I missed Alosa’s cunning that she exuded in the first book. The introduction of the siren queen was just lackluster. There was so much build up for her story, but in the end there wasn’t really much story there. I also missed the intrigue and the romantic tension. For some reason, I just didn’t feel that burning connection like I did in the first one. I did feel it a little more towards the end, but that was it. I just kept wondering the whole time: Where is the fierce and witty Alosa from the first book?It was good. It was a fun adventure story, but after preordering it as soon as I finished reading the first one and the anticipation of months waiting, it sadly just did not live up.

Well, that was quite the adventure if I do say so myself. It took me so so long to read this and it really shouldn't have considering these are such fast and fun books. For some reason I really just had an issue getting into it. I felt like it didn't really need a sequel to it, nonetheless, I am glad we got one. It wasn't until I forced myself to sit down and really read it that I got interested in it, even then, I found some parts to just be really dull and disinteresting.Once I got past all of that, I actually did really enjoy it. It's still a fun quick read with some really awesome characters. I also really enjoyed specific things that happened in this book, like getting to delve more into the sirens and finding and learning more about Alosa's mother. I loved the progression of Alosa and Riden's relationship and how they grew to trust each other; though it definitely did bounce back and forth. They would argue and then turn around and make out right away; and this happened throughout almost the whole book, so it was slightly annoying.

Finished reading the second book the other day. One thing I'm absolutely loving about Tricia Levenseller is that she made this world so easy to dive into. The story was smooth and effortless. And the action was brilliantly laid out.The beginning of this book started out much like the last - in battle! I think that's my favorite way for a book to start right now. In the middle of the action. However, when we arrive back at the ship, I was honestly a bit ticked with Alosa. I feel that she made a lot of excuses for herself when it comes to Riden. He clearly wasn't an enemy. I think the author wanted to add tension, but didn't quite succeed with making it GOOD tension.Once things got moving, the book was truly enjoyable. There were a few twists and turns that was done well. Things were getting intense and the only way to win the battle for their lives was for Alosa to greet her inner siren. To learn and try to control that side of her.We get to learn more about Alosa and Riden - how they can work together as a team, you know, once they stop finding excuses to fight each other. And Riden is, well... RIDEN.Overall, this was still a fun book! The uniqueness of this duology is one that I think everyone should at least read once.

For the exalted price of this book, one would expect a quality product. However, the pages are really cheap. The printing is very light, hardly readable. And the charts are very small. Should have purchased a magnifying glass with the book. So, no, I do not recommend this book. Really sorry I bought this. I have purchased many other stock market related books that are expensive and they have been of very high quality. This however is incredibly CHEAP.The information is readily available in many other places around the web. I have been trading stocks for 15 years and I definitely did not learn anything from this book. So, if you are really new, you may find the information valuable. If you have been trading for a long time and know how to draw and interpret charts, skip this.

Well written with clear practical examples. The best thing about the book is the distillation of tools and indicators necessary to generate solid trade ideas. Combine this with the practical examples of how to then express these ideas with either equity or options and you have everything you'll need to make good trades.I wish the charts were in color and a bit larger, as many of the candle wicks were difficult to read. However they are very clear in the companion website.

As a trader you need to understand options as they can increase your winnings 10 fold and allow you to limit your risk. This book to my knowledge is the best one out there. Greg makes options sound simple and how they can be used for any strategy. Even better he shows you how you can use options to generate income on the stock you already hold which is a lifesaver for full time traders. I'm hoping Greg brings out an advanced options book soon.

Greg is a Pro in every way.

Great product! Fast shipping! Satisfied customer!

Read it. Read it again in pieces. Great weapon in library war chest. You will not be left with a spinning head or feeling of frustration.

An expert speaks armed with Decades of experience trading millions or rather billions of dollars, day in and day out. A nice view into an otherwise unseen world.

This book is not even worth $5. Nothing original in this book, just changed the words to look like author's own experience or knowledge. Get Candle charts book and options bible rather than this book.

This book clearly explains why there is no problem with the 'national debt'. He shows that the securities used to acquire for the government money to cover deficit spending by Congress are rolled over forever and the principal never paid (only interest paid). A debt that is never repaid and everyone knows it is just not a real debt. But you also realize that most of the so-called debt consists of time deposits containing the principal of funds used to 'buy' the US Treasury securities by private, foreign and state and local government investors. Most of the money is there to return the principal and the Treasury can use securities in the same way to acquire money to pay the interest. It too will roll over these 'interest securities' forever. He also shows that the Chinese and Japanese are not buying these securities with their national currency but with dollars acquired by selling us imports. And by selling securities to the Chinese and Japanese we are draining these dollars out of circulation where they otherwise would probably cause inflation as we are doing large deficit spending on wars against ISIS, the Taliban, and beefing up NATO.

This book explains how the sovereign money system of a nation such as the U.S. actually works, which is not at all like most people think. It exposes the sham or ignorance of those who are always screaming for a balanced budget, those who claim that our grandchildren are in debt to China, and those who think that the creator of the dollar must somehow go to China to get dollars. It explains how the Federal Reserve uses interest rates and the sale and purchase of bonds as tools to stabilize the financial engine of the nation. It also explains how it is NOT the case that granny must make a deposit before the banks can make a loan. Things are not like they used to be down at the Old Bailey Savings and Loan. If you understand anything about MMT (Modern Monetary Theory), you will see that this guy is describing something very similar to that, and he acknowledges the similarity. That is, he and the MMTers are just describing how it all works. It is way beyond negligence that the leaders of a country such as the U.S. (which uses its own fiat dollars), have allowed the economy to get in the shape it is in, when prudent spending/investing could quickly turn things around. This could be done by investing in our real assets (our children, infrastructure, and services for those who need them). A whole generation or more are being cheated out of their birthright--a right to pursue their happiness through work, through education, housing, and the raising of a family with a decent standard of living-- because the government has allowed the fiat money to be collected at the top, and has made sure that lack of liquidity (income) on the part of the laboring class means that there will be no demand and hence, no real economy anytime soon. It doesn't have to be that way. Americans need to send leaders up who understand the system so that those leaders can make informed decisions instead of blindly acting out of ignorance. But first, Americans need to educate themselves as to how the system actually works so that they do not fall victim to the demagogues who wish to make matters worse by calling for slashing of spending, balanced budget amendments and such. The U.S. hasn't paid off its debt in more than a hundred years and those in the know don't expect it to. They understand that if all the debt were paid off at once, there would be no money left for a dynamic economy. In the game, Monopoly, all the players could return all the money back to the bank and while the bank would no longer be "in deficit," neither would there be a dynamic economy, i.e. no money to purchase Boardwalk, let alone Baltic Avenue. Monopoly rules say if the bank goes dry the banker is allowed to print up money on plain paper (color it green) in order to keep the game going. Monopoly runs on a fiat system. Well, the "game" has stopped for a lot of people out here. The ordinary guy could use some QE. How about it, Mrs. Yellen, could you please educate some of those morons over in Congress? I know it isn't your job, but could some grownups do something, please? The budget austerity crowd reminds me of those misguided medical "professionals" who bled George Washington to death. Many of them have the best of intentions as they bleed a weakened economy and sacrifice our children's economic futures all "for our own good." This little book does its part to try to educate the masses. The first step is to get it and read it, and discuss it with family and friends. Remember: friends don't let friends embrace austerity (or the myths that go with it) in a nation that creates it own currency.

The book provides a short, sometimes too short for a book targeted at general readers, exposition of the mechanics and issues surrounding the outstanding amount treasuries. You will understand why the U.S. public debt is not a burden for the nation and that arguments surrounding bond vigilantes, the threat of higher taxes to repay the debt, or china refusing to buy treasuries don't hold any ground. The arguments in this book can be extended to any other monetarily sovereignty government (Japan, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.) and help to understand why the Eurozone sovereign crisis, the Argentinian sovereign crisis, among others, occurred.

I wish our senators and representatives understood how our fiat currency works. We would be a much more powerful country. This book explains how money works and where it comes from today since we went off the gold standard. If you are fearful of the growing so-called "national debt", you need to read this book.

In the current political situation people are wondering why suddenly neither political party is worrying about bond vigilantes and the mountsin of federal debt. This book provides a clear point of view that debt does not matter for the USA, or China and Japan, but that it does matter for Eurozone countries.

Read this book! When one tries to understand complex issues, it's important to review as many opinions as you can. It's also critical to ascertain the weight one gives each opinion based on the source of that opinion. Frank Newman has spent the last 20 to 25 years working at the very pinnacle of both private and public sectors. Dept. Sec. of U.S. Treasury under Clinton, CEO and Chairman of Shenzen Development Bank in China, and several other C suite positions at US banks before that. This guy CLEARLY has unique credentials that merit his opinions be assigned a greater weight than those who do not. As an example, Paul Ryan, for instance, has literally no experience in either public or private financial institutions. Therefore, his views on the subjects such as US debt instruments and their impact on the overall economy should be assigned less weight than Frank Newman's. Just a for instance. Read the book. It's enlightening. In all thy getting...get understanding.

Takes the reader step by step through his reasoning as to why our notions of public debt are not as logical as we think. Explaining in detail our financial system and how US Treasuries actually work.
