Review

"These short memories, of the people Burnett met and interviewed over the years, on- and off-camera, bring it back — the golden age of variety shows....Burnett has a writer's eye for the moment, the detail, the slip that reveals character. She's never mean and always grateful."—Los Angeles Times"Carol was a huge star on television because she was funny, daring, and always genuine.  We loved Carol because we felt we knew her. With this book, we do.  She trusts us with her personal anecdotes, happy, sad, hilarious and poignant. Thank you Carol. "—Billy Crystal "I read This Time Together in one sitting and when I finished I felt like Carol had been sitting beside me telling me these wonderful stories of her life. It's funny, it's endearing and very moving. I cannot recommend it highly enough."—Julie Andrews "I grew up watching Carol Burnett. She's an amazing actress, talented writer and legendary comedienne.  She inspired me to do what I'm doing today. And believe me, if I knew how to read, I would definitely read this book."—Ellen DeGeneres " I love this book because it's written the way she talks--nothing stilted, nothing distanced. You'll read it in one gulp (I did) and then you'll read it again. She's an excellent writer--so spot-on intelligent and hilarious.—Hal Prince "Reading Carol Burnett's book, THIS TIME TOGETHER, makes me realize that every American family prays that they can have someone as lovely as Carol as their next door neighbor."—Tony Bennett

I just finished reading This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection by Carol Burnett. There is just something about hearing her name that automatically puts a smile on your face. Could it be her infectious smile? Perhaps it is the familiar warmth she exudes when we see on onscreen or onstage. Still, it could be just bringing laughter into our lives. Whatever it is, I know that for me, Carol Burnett has brought great joy to my life over the years.I have such fond memories of Carol growing up. My family and I would watch her weekly variety show...it was almost like a tradition! The cast, guest stars, fabulous costumes and great skits were so worth the wait. It's a shame that variety shows are no longer a part of today's television viewing options.Reading This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection, allowed me a chance to reminisce about my childhood and the reasons why I love Ms. Burnett so much. With every word, I could hear her voice and found myself smiling as she told her stories of her humble beginnings, and ultimately how she made it to television. The behind the scenes look into her career and family life were inspiring. Carol Burnett is the epitome of class. I don't think there is anything that could tarnish her image. She represents what we should all aspire to be, whether celebrity or not. This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection by Carol Burnett is a heartwarming collection of stories from one of the most beloved actresses of our time. It is also a reminder of when life was much simpler, and all we had to worry about was where we were going to sit when we turned on her show. In my house, there were no bad seats!I loved reading this book and now hope to read the others she has written. If you're looking for some lighthearted reading, and want to put a smile on your face, then pick up a copy of This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection!

I think this is an utterly delightful memoir. In this book, Ms. Burnett revisits some of her favorite stories based on audience Q & A from her variety show and other public appearances. She also adds some stories that are meaningful to her. I listened to this as an audiobook, read by the author. I think that made it all the more enjoyable. It was like sitting down with Ms. Burnett for a cup of tea and a chat. The recollections cover her childhood, her early acting years in NYC, her variety show, later life projects, her family, and other actors. I grew up watching the Carol Burnett Show. My mom and I would watch together on Saturday nights. That was hands down the best night of television on CBS. I have always loved and admired Ms. Burnett both for her many talents and her humility. The main criticism of this book seems to be that it lacks salacious gossip. I'm sure Ms. Burnett has had experiences with people behaving badly. Instead, she prefers to focus on the joy and goodness of others. And in October 2016, I think that is a good thing! While we can't fully know the people we see on TV, I have always had the impression that Ms. Burnett is a genuinely good person. This book is written by a woman who worked hard to succeed and does not take her success for granted. She has a true fan's awe regarding other actors and that is fun to hear. I think this book is as warm and funny as the author.

It's odd. I'm 46, am NOT an American nor have I ever loved in the US. And yet...I LOVE Carol and I don't know exactly how, amd familiar with her show and some of the most famous sketches. Chapter 1 is "Jimmy Stewart". And that's when I wish I could say to Carol "you had me at Jimmy"...I couldn't believe she started the book with her favorite and most admired star, which happens to be mine also. The thing is, she got to LIVE him, to enjoy him. All I get is to say that he is my "Impossible Love Interest" for obvious reasons. And then..she talks about Cary Grant!!!! My excitement has a reason: my previous life was obviously when these two were great. My favorite actors, films, music...they all date back to the early 1920's-1960's. Considering I was born in 1969...Well, you get the point. Above all, what amazes me about this book is Carol's GRATEFULNESS. She does not ONCE take proper credit for any of her creations. It's one after another: she is obviously very much aware of her good fortune, but the fact that she is grateful places her as one of the GREATS, way beyond her majestic talent. She constantly goes on about all those who surrounded her and still do, I think that is rare and beautiful in today's world. OH!!! And not a single negative word about anyone. She's as understanding as can be. Again..rare in this world of ours. So whether you are a fan of hers or not, the book is a magnificent example of several qualities I wish were more present in our everyday life. And yes, you laugh out loud all the time, too. So thank YOU, Carol Burnett.

If you’ve enjoyed her humor and she’s made you laugh, this book can only add to the enjoyment of this iconic, legendary woman’s offerings. Ms. Burnett is a funny, intelligent, and interesting. Her life has been one of an average girl who grew up to do above average things, know interesting people, and making people laugh. It’s her story to tell, but you’ll find out about the important people in her life, the moments that stand out for influencing who she was and who she would become, the odds she overcame, and the people she worked with who took part in creating the Carol Burnett we’d all come to love. She’s part of classic TV history and brushed shoulders with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. She also became one of the biggest, most beloved herself. If you want to know the little things, the moments that you saw on TV, but what was happening to make them happen, this is the book. Her storytelling style is pure Carol - you can hear her voice telling you stories like friends sitting and talking. If you’ve loved her stuff and find her funny, this read of the life of Ms. Burnett is a must-read.

Review

“Too often, school improvement initiatives layer activities upon cultures and systems that are not ready to receive them. Uncommon Learning rejects the notion that something must be done in addition, and instead begins with changing the foundational culture of a school—consistent with NASSP’s Breaking Ranks Framework for School Improvement. Countless schools—and more important, countless students—will no doubt benefit from the guidance Eric shares.”—JoAnn Bartoletti, Executive Director, National Association of Secondary School Principals“In Digital Leadership, Eric Sheninger trail blazed the path many educational leaders followed to become digitally connected and now, in Uncommon Learning, he gets right to the heart of exactly what we need to do to create schools designed to empower today’s students. Eric doesn’t just talk about change; he has actually led change in his system and his story is both inspirational and filled with practical tips for implementation.“—Dave Burgess, New York Times Best Selling author of Teach Like a PIRATE and co-author of P is Pirate: Inspirational ABC’s for Educators"Eric's vision and collection of resources to create a student-centred learning experience for schools is something that all educators should read. Although he shares great ideas on what opportunities could look like, he challenges us to push our own thinking of what school could really look like and move forward to become the innovative educators our students need."— George Couros, Innovative Teaching, Learning, and Leadership Consultant"For the past several years, Eric's mission has been to find effective ways to use technology to improve student performance. In 'Uncommon Learning - Creating Schools That Work For Kids' he shares the most impactful practices he has found. These practices provide a guide to move school reform, using technology, from a concept to a reality." —Dr. Bill Daggett, Chairman and Founder, International Center for Leadership in Education"Get rid of excuses. Stop having conversations. Start taking action. Uncommon Learning is the guidebook that will get schools from apathy to action, from ignorance to influence, from the status quo to supercharged with excitement. Eric Sheninger has written another winner."—Vicki Davis (@coolcatteacher), Author, Reinventing Writing Host, The Every Classroom Matters Show"Every educator who truly wants to maximize the learning opportunity for every student will benefit from the thought provoking questions, challenges and solutions Eric provides in UnCommon Learning. He artfully provides a roadmap for creating a bold new vision for learning for both educators and students through empowerment, mindset change, blended learning, re-designing instructional practices through a true integration of digital strategies to enable students to be creative, problem solvers and owners of their learning. His lessons learned and those of teachers will provide schools with the foundation for transforming their schools for uncommon learning."—Susan Gendron, President, International Center for Leadership in Education"This is one of the very few, really good books about digital learning – not just because of its clear and informative examples and rich cache of tools, but because its experienced and multi-award winning author, Eric Sheninger, explains how to develop and implement digital learning, indeed all learning, in a balanced, sustainable and self-critical way. Unlike most pro-technology books, this passionate yet practical book is more about the zen of changing than about the zealotry of what must be changed. Teachers, leaders and change agents in education everywhere should put this book right at the top of their reading lists."—Andy Hargreaves, Winner of Boston College Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award, 2015Brennan Chair, Lynch School of Education, Boston College"With a strikingly fresh and practical perspective, Eric Sheninger takes contemporary learning to a new level of possibility with UnCommon Learning: Creating Schools That Work for Kids. Educators throughout the world agree that we need to support "right-now" learners, but the big question is HOW to transform the schools in our own communities. Eric has created a modern leading-manual which promises to be a must have classic for principals, headmasters, administrators, parents, and teachers. If our students read the book they will find an advocate. Sheninger's thinking on learning communities, curriculum, digital tools, networking, and makerspaces is genuinely designed to work for kids of all ages."—Heidi Hayes Jacobs, Author and international expert on contemporary curriculum and instruction"UnCommon Learning is a book that is long overdue! In this most important book for educators at all levels, Eric Sheninger has put into writing what he has “preached’ all over the country for years – that in order to effectively maximize student learning, the technology that is all around us cannot be ignored but instead must be incorporated into the classroom learning process. UnCommon Learning will prove to be a game-changer for how we educate children!"— Baruti Kafele Principal, Education Consultant, Speaker, Author"There is a growing movement in this country and others to use what we have learned over the decades about effective teaching and learning to design the next generation of classrooms and schools. Eric Sheninger’s new book is a welcome addition that movement. He adeptly walks the line between practical strategies and motivating visions of the near and distant future."— Robert J. Marzano, CEO, Marzano Research“In this urgent and practical book, Eric Sheninger argues that technology must become as central to students' learning as it is in the ‘real’ world. Uncommon Learning will teach educational leaders how to integrate technology into the classroom in ways that reflect today's complex, feedback-rich digital environment."—Daniel H. Pink, Author of Drive and A Whole New Mind"Sheninger, in UnCommon Learning, identifies key areas for growth within our current school systems. Most importantly, he lays out a simple and intentional path to addressing these areas with the goal of improving learning and the overall school experience for students. Educators, regardless of their role within a school, can use this text as a guide to create optimal learning environments for their students with the ultimate goal of creating schools that provide current, relevant and engaging learning experiences."—Josh Stumpenhorst (@stumpteacher), Award Winning Teacher and author of The New Teacher Revolution"Unlike so many experts offering prescriptions for our beleaguered schools, Eric Sheninger has walked the walk, running an actual school and striving each day to make it better. In UnCommon Learning, his ideas, born out of real experience, not wishful thinking, will resonate with smart educators who have seen the Next Big Thing come and go with little to show. Our kids deserve to be surrounded by educators like Sheninger who are willing to examine their own prejudices and practices, then think long and hard about what needs to change."—Greg Toppo, National Education writer and author of The Game Believes in You: How Digital Play Can Make Our Kids Smarter"UnCommon Learning is a great look at the six most important EdTech trends in schools that work for kids: online and blended learning, BYOD, badges, maker, professional learning, and new learning environments. Eric lays out eight key steps to creating UnCommon Learning environments. Don’t miss it!"—Tom Vander Ark, CEO, Getting Smart"Schools today are at a disadvantage when it comes to educating today’s learner, which necessitates a corrective plan of action. Eric provides not only ideas, but also practical strategies that have been implemented to create the type of learning that students crave and deserve. This book will change the way you think about school structure and function in an increasingly digital world."—Todd Whitaker, Professor of Educational Leadership and author of over 30 books, including What Great Teachers Do Differently"For students to succeed in today’s fast changing world, schools must join technology and teaching to prepare students with relevant knowledge and skills. Bringing passionate commitment and vast practical experience, Sheninger lays out concrete ideas and strategies for every school to transform learning to provide meaningful learning experiences for all students. This is a must-read for practitioners and policymakers.” —Bob Wise, President, Alliance for Excellent Education"Educational transformation can happen and this book tells how. I loved the information in this book, and I am able to use this information along with the Montessori method while I am developing my new school library, and planning for a makerspace to be designed in each classroom that will be specifically designed for the age and developmental level of each classroom of students in my school.

A fantastic read for all educators that are looking to use some innovative practices to enhance student learning. The book is laid out in a fashion that allows you to use each chapter separately as a guide for each specific practice. Read this ASAP and start preparing your students for the skills they will need in the fast paced change of the 21st Century.

This book is well written, easy to follow and Eric is such an engaged author who even is discussing this book in our book study Voxer group. This has inspired me in many ways to look at how I can improve my teaching style to increase higher order thinking skills.

Great book

a good book.

Great read and am enjoying a voxer book study around this book!

I just finished this outstanding book by Eric Sheninger, one of the leading educational thinkers in the world today. The title of the book is perfect, as throughout it, Sheninger makes the case that we need to make dramatic changes in our schools and classrooms, moving beyond the "common" to more relevant, authentic, innovative, and student-centered experiences. Although such practices are currently "uncommon," if we read Eric's book, we have a roadmap for changing the status quo and making "uncommon learning" the norm. Throughout this book, Sheninger offers practical, proven ideas for transforming our classrooms, libraries, and school cultures. He draws on both his past experiences as principal of an award-winning high school as well as his current experiences working with educators around the globe, sharing lessons learned from both that can be replicated by others hoping to improve educational experiences for both students and teachers. This book is clearly written and organized. It starts by making the case for why we must change the way we do school. Then, it proceeds with chapter-by-chapter examples of creating specific "uncommon" learning experiences. In each of these chapters, Sheninger offers specific stories and examples showing the "how" of change. In the final chapter, "Schools that Work for Students," Sheninger is at his best, offering a call to action so that our kids' learning experiences are ones that make them actually want to come to school. Specifically, he offers eight ways to move uncommon learning experiences forward in our schools. I recommend this book for educators desiring the best for students we serve and looking for specific tips on how to do so.

Eric Sheninger has done it again! UnCommon Learning is the second coming of Digital Leadership with a spin learning spaces in the physical and virtual world. Topics like digital badging and blended learning spaces are brought to life in such a way that readers can put into action the next day in their schools or districts. UnCommon Learning changes the educational conversation and paves the way for all schools stakeholders to understand that the initiatives explained in the book that must become commonplace on a global scale. Kudos to Eric Sheninger for writing yet another inspiring book for educators from all walks of life to read and ultimately impact the success of all students.
