About the Author

JEREMY BENTHAM was born in London on February 15, 1748, to a family of comfortable means. His was the life of a child prodigy who read Latin at three years of age and at twelve was enrolled in Oxford University, where he received his undergraduate degree at the age of sixteen. Thereafter, he studied law at Lincoln's Inn, Westminster. Inheritances from his parents afforded Bentham the opportunity to pursue a life of study and writing. While in his mid-forties, he dedicated himself to the critical analysis and reform of moral, political, religious, legal, educational, and economic institutions as they existed in England. Though he found the judicial system to be hypocritical and corrupt, Bentham's fascination with the fundamental ideals of the law steered him toward philosophy and science in an effort to develop standards that could ground the social order. His reformist tendencies proved to be a significant factor in the development of his now famous system of ethics known as utilitarianism, wherein human action was to be judged by the amount of pleasure and pain it produced. Bentham's published works include: A Fragment on Govern­ment (1776), An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation (1781), The Rationale of Judicial Evidence (edited by John Stuart Mill in 1825), and two volumes on Constitutional Code (ca. 1830). Bentham died in London on June 16, 1832.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PRINCIPLES OF MORALS AND LEGISLATION by Jeremy Bentham is at the origin of Utilitarianism, so very necessary for understanding this philosophy.

As an attempt to create a unified theory of law by cataloging the causes of, needs for, and nature of laws in society this work is quite successful.

The 2010 paperback is basically a photocopied version, which seems like it was done on a melting photocopier! Many of the pages are barely readable, and there are photocopied notes someone took, which aren't even helpful... I highly recommend purchasing the 1988 version instead! I don't know why such a version is being sold by Amazon.

The works speak for them selves over time, but it was great to be able to have a complete set of his works

I love animals and I love miniatures. Thus, when I saw this book I bought it. It is a creative, useful and informative book and I can't wait to begin making some of the ten (10) animals in it: the deer mouse, the young cottontail, the harp seal, the black bear, the basset hound, the white-tailed fawn, the red fox, the bull frog, the bledgling bluebird and the siamese kitten. This is my only qualm. I understand a book is limited, but at just 128 pages, I feel the author could have added more creatures to make in added pages. All are adorable and realistic looking, except for the black bear. In my opinion, the bear looks a little too cute, not realistic at all. The bear looks more as if he belongs at Disney World as a character at the Country Bear Jamboree. The book is in full color with illustrations and step by step instructions. All in all, I feel this was a worthy purchase, though I didn't pay full price from Amazon and instead went with a market place seller. If you love animals, miniatures, or clay making, I recommend this book to purchase for yourself or for someone else.

A good book, but I think a horse should have been included rather than similar figurines like a mouse and rabbit. I love that the author converts some things to metric, yet temperatures are not--hence 4 stars. I think American is the only large country in the world that still uses imperial measurements. I find it annoying that authors of how-to books aren't considerate enough to convert everything for the rest of the world. But apart from that one issue, thank you Katherine Dewy for another great book.

I love this book. It is exactly what the title says; an instructional book for sculpting realistic animals. So many of the books for sculptors using polymer clay are incomplete and leave you with a product suitable only for giving to your school-age relatives; this manual is absolutely NOT that. It is text-book quality for an extremely reasonable price. Life-Like Animals takes you from the very beginning - Different types of clays available and their properties, tools that are necessary and those that not essential but make life easier, proper baking methods etc. - through refined sculpting and finishing techniques.I purchased this book at the time time as Creating Lifelike Figures in Polymer Clay: Tools and Techniques for Sculpting Realistic Figures and I assumed the section on clay and tools would be the same, recycled for use in this book. Surprisingly, though the intro to clay section is pretty much the same, there is new material in the tools section, including different methods for doing the some of the same tasks and a couple of tools not covered in her other book.

This is a pretty good tutorials for the basics of shaping animals. It shows you how to make amateurs and some tips on painting your project when you’re finished I just wish there were more animals in the book she still does present quite a few but I want to be entire Ark demonstrated for me, ha ha

Great book to learn how to make animals, reading this book helps you figure out measurements and shapes of other animals also. Would recommend it to anyone. A lot of tips and tricks of how to master all projects

Katherine Dewey is an amazing artist that is extremely talented; her book makes me want to start straight away, although I have been too busy recently.Katherine's figures may look simple to follow, but this shows years of practise and her love of clay. A must have book, to encourage those who already can, to get back into sculpting and to those who can't, it gives lots of advice, diagrams and pictures. For example to show how to sculpt a dog she uses 10 pages for the Basset Hound and 10 more pages for the Red Fox. She gives money saving tips on making tools that work and how to make a cheap armature that saves on using too much clay and also keeps the work a lot lighter in weight.Thankyou Katherine Dewey you have made a new fan. I will always keep an eye out for any new book you present :)

Good book for beginners those looking for code examples for the Pi.

My little dude's language is all science/math/robotics/#STEM, so coding is a natural fit for him, but something I know NOTHING about! I appreciate finding cool resources to fuel his interest and learning, and these books @nostarchpress sent for review are perfect! He's been studying up for days since they arrived!

I was given a review copy of this book a few weeks ago and was happy to have it. I'm a data scientist (a software developer that learned a lot of statistics) and have worked with devices, but I could never do much with the hardware side. There's an impression that 'computer geeks' know all things computer, but most of us never get into soldering or low level hardware even if you have coded for ages. I've worked with devices quite a bit, but it was always on pre-assembled devices, not ones I made myself.With this book and a $35.00 kit Amazon recommended and I was off to the races. Full disclosure, I've done some really simple work with other boards, but that only gave me about a day's head start.This book does a tremendous job explaining how to work with the Pi. However, it's not really a programming book as much as a "Build something that works book." Instead of focusing on the finer nuances of sorting algorithms or database normalization, you learn why things work, then you're guided through watching someone build something. But instead of learning it from the POV of learning an abstract concept so that you can apply it generally, it shows you how to perform specific (although just about any task you'd want to do with a Pi is covered here) tasks, explains it thoroughly and keeps the code succinct so that non-programmers can follow along. The code is written in a way it's almost prose, it simply connects the dots between the Pi and the peripherals, but every step is covered.Can you benefit from this book with 0 technical expertise? Sure, but it may take some dilligence. But if you've ever build anything mechanical or ever written very basic software programs (and I mean watching a single a 'follow along' video), you'll be fine. If you're a beginner but are scared to get started, this book and a cheap kit will let you work wonder. Yes, wonders.When you're done with this book, you'll know how to Program the pi, configure it, take photos with it, connect to wifi and Bluetooth, play sound, record audio and video, use sensors, turn on light, accept input from a keypad, turn on a motor and a lot more. Yes, you'll be able to do all of that (including creating a smart pumpkin that takes pictures of trick or treaters).The book starts off explaining the environment and immediately proceeds to get you started on things. Each chapter is structured meticulously and is a testimony to how well the author knows his material and knows how to teach. From a teaching POV, this is one of the best written books I've come across and that's said as a fellow author. It's fantastic.Each chapter tells you what you're going to do. Starts out conceptually using examples everyone is familiar with and then shows you the hardware that's needed and the code. As I said earlier, the code is written in a way that it's like a Love letter to the computer with numbers on each code snippet that point back to a legend to explain the details. It's not in any way redundant to those with experience, but it's perfectly suited to someone trying to learn with no experience. That can't be overemphasized.From there, it begins with a typical Getting Started chapter. It's so dense however, that a whole lot is said very succinctly.Next is gives you a very basic overview of the Electronics you'll be working with. From there, you'll start to build a Robot which will get you hooked if you're not already. This portion focuses on building the robot base.Then it shows you how to move the robot around. From there it goes into Obstacle Avoidance (and honestly, this is a very basic version of what automated cars do) Next it shows you how to send out alerts with Lights and Sound. Implicitly is that you're building the groundwork for two way communication. From there it moves onto detecting lines and following paths.Then it gets really cool. It covers Computer Vision to a degree that pretty much anyone could understand it but it's still very functional. Sure, you're not going to go out and start a computer vision company after just this book, but it'll more than motivate any child or teenager into considering a career in high tech, but adults will benefit just as much.At this point, you have a working project, a fully working robot that can connect to a network, interact with Wifi and bluetooth, send and receive messages (including SMS and Email), can follow instructions, can 'learn' to move around while avoiding collisions, and even turn on lights and sounds. And yep, you'll learn all you need to get a motor started and run with it.From there though, every other function becomes crystal clear. I was able to intuit how to get the keypad working along with using a Google Map to create a small itinerary. Yep, it can send SMS messages and with just a little playing around, you'll be able to both trigger and have automatically triggered pictures taken and then sending them back to you. It's hard to describe how cool this is, but for a total of less than $60.00 and a few nights and days off, you'll be able to do all of this and build very serious other projects, from Smart Infinity Mirrors to home audio servers.Tremendously well done (with equally tremendous editing), well written and more than that, written with a obsession on what the readers will benefit from, this is a great book on every count.
