This is a well-written book aimed around the upper elementary level. It has clear text which speaks directly to the reader ("You can see...") without condescension, neat and charming line drawing illustrations, and many useful suggested activities, which take minimal supplies and equipment but illustrate the intended concepts well. It was written in 1952, but has mostly worn well; after all, most of geology is still pretty similar! There are a couple of exceptions, though. A section on damming rivers contains no discussion of any negative environmental effects, which presents a great opportunity to have students do a little research about how the thinking has become more complex since the book was written. More serious is the discussion of how the earth's crust moves (Chapter IX); since this was published before plate tectonics theory was widely accepted, it refers to some outdated models that could be confusing to students, even if you later point out that they have been superseded and present the newer theory. (Research shows that plausible misconceptions are hard to dislodge from our brains, even after explanations of why they are wrong.) I'm planning to just skip that chapter and replace it with more up-to-date material. For the especially sensitive, there are a few minor gender anachronisms; most of the illustrations which include people (which together constitute a small proportion of the overall illustrations) show boys or men, and the final section is called "Man and the Earth". I find these items not very troublesome, and plan to discuss them lightly (lots of waggling eyebrows) when we get there. Overall, I find the writing to be very engaging and the formatting to be refreshing- no pages over-crammed with splashy but irrelevant visuals, no call-out and text boxes constantly interrupting the flow of the text. Just highly readable, even a bit lyrical in places, explanations of how the earth changes over time.

this is an outstanding book, it shows clearly with easy to understand illustrations how rivers create the geology of our world.

I'm using this book for my third grader's homeschool. It reads like a story and we're both enjoying it. (She reads it independently and narrates it to me, but I always read it first.)

This is an excellent introduction to Earth Science, and I am thrilled that it is now back in print. I have been recommending it for many years now to other homeschoolers in search of quality living science books.

I would have to say that this is a good book because of its showing of pictures. Which also made it a fun okay book. the book has very good hand drawn pictures. If you want to learn about the earth this is a perfect book for you. One thing I didnt like is the confusing words that it used. If its going to be in a 7th grade library 7th graders should be able to understand most of the words.Overall it was an okay book but not that good. Unless you like educational books.

There is certainly no need to buy this over-simplistic one-idea book--but I did find it inspiring and here are my notes in the context of other trend-following books... As a blackjack and poker aficionado before developing my investment interests, I am consistently amused by the level of superficiality that I find in the more reputable and PhD-replete field of stock market investing. However I might be mistaken on some points, because I only skimmed through any of these books, primarily looking for specific advice on when to buy and sell.A. Main points about the ETF Trend Following Playbook.1. This book promotes the idea of total reliance on the 200-day EMA (Exponential Moving Average) with such chutzpah, I tend to think there is something to this...? So, I expect to be disappointed, but it has gotten me interested in experimenting.2. The most glaring shortcoming of this book is that it lacks any additional parameter, even to distinguish one ETF from another, either technical or fundamental.3. Much of this book is taken up with cheerleading for "following the system" and "controlling your emotions." There are also more necessary chapters about "why" we could do better if we only owned stocks while they went up. Of course most investment books have this sort of cheerleading and perhaps most people need it. The main difference with Tom Lydon's book is that there is very little else.4. As several other reviews have pointed out--most of this book has nothing to do with trend-following, but is just a catalog of available ETFs, with no actionable advice or even any distinctive opinion about each ETF. Possibly this entire book was patched together by one of Mr. Lydon's secretaries as something to hand out in client meetings. I even disagree somewhat with those who say this is "appropriate for total beginners." For people new to ETFs, it seems to me that the indiscriminate inclusion of just about every obscure ETF would be unnecessary and confusing.5. However as an experienced ETF investor, I like this book as a handy reference with which to refresh and check my knowledge. For example, until skimming this book, it never occurred to me that trend-trading Forex ETFs might be a possible alternative to Forex trading.B. More speculations about Tom Lydon.I think it is important to note that Tom Lydon appears to be quite well respected. He only has a bachelor's degree but is the current editor of ETFTrends.com, "the no. 1 site for ETF news and commentary." Current president of Global Trends investment advisory firm. A founding member of Charles Schwab's Institutional Advisory Board. A board member for several fund companies. A frequent contributor to Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, Investor's Business Daily, Barron's, MarketWatch, Investment News and CNBC. Additionally...1. Apparently, Tom Lydon left his initial grindhouse position at Fidelity to form Global Trends during the 1990's. Apparently, Global Trends became a successful pioneer in emphasizing ETF-based investing. Thus resulting in his current position as a leading expert in ETFs.2. Investing in broad, unmanaged ETFs vs. "value investing" does not make much sense either in theory or for reputation--unless you believe strongly in the less-respected schools of "trend following" or "market timing."3. So, it seems very understandable that Tom Lydon is somewhat of a maverick in advocating "trend following." Somewhat paradoxically, he takes the conventional stance against "market timing." "Please don't confuse trend following with market timing... Market Timing is guessing; trend following is a mathematical strategy." (p. 45)4. Tom Lydon's supposedly mathematical proof for his simple system relies entirely on one study done on the S&P by a friend Werner Keller, president of a research firm. Keller's study suggests about 2-3 times greater returns than for buy-and-hold, and about half the maximum drawdowns, over two 40-year periods. However the resulting growth rate seems only about 8% annually.5. I can find no clear advice in the book about minimizing the overhead created by fees and slippage. If you make 12 trades per year, with an overhead of -1%, that is -12% per year. So if a short-term system only adds +4% annually, this is likely worthless. However Tom Lydon is hardly unique among short-term investment gurus in failing to be clear about this essential arithmetic. Such is the rule not the exception. Before becoming overly critical, let us look at Tom Lydon's book in the context of other trend-following books...C. My current sources of trend-following ideas, in order of priority to check out. (These are not recommendations--just the books I happen to have.)#1. ETF Trend Following Playbook by Tom Lydon. (Dotcom: ETFtrends.)Buy and sell according to 200-day EMA. This idea can be tested easily with a spreadsheet. There is no need to buy the book. Tom Lydon consistently and emphatically rejects any exceptions to his rule, even for leveraged inverse ETFs. Significant empirical evidence: one 80-year study of the S&P.#2. The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing by Jason Kelly. (Dotcom: JasonKelly.)This is primarily a long-term value-investing guide, which also uses market timing to know when to leave the market. Kelly suggests using leveraged ETFs, apparently claiming they have twice the upside as well as twice the downside. Perhaps I am mistaken, but I don't agree. I find they mainly have twice the downside. Instead of the single parameter suggested by Lydon, Kelly suggests combining the following three indicators for buy and sell signals.50-day SMA. Kelly seems to suggest 'buy' when crossing above and 'sell' when crossing below. (However he does not specifically say this, and his chart shows a 20-day SMA with only 'buy' signals.)MACD Histogram based on daily periods. Buy when crossing to positive, sell when crossing to negative.14-day RSI. Buy when moving up across 30. Sell when moving down below 70.Kelly is often wordy and is unclear. He seems to suggest a "buy" or "sell" when any two signals agree--but that a long-term strategy does not need to sell unless all three signals agree. Significant empirical evidence: none, except for one example showing that this strategy might have helped to avoid the brunt of the crash of 2008.#3. Sensible Stock Investing by David Van Knapp. (Dotcom: SensibleStocks.)Another "fundamental" value-investing system, also using "technical" indicators. Van Knapp has a chapter on "momentum trading" which applies only to "type M" stocks, with specific screening data on page 204. (4-wk increase > 10%. 13-wk increase >15%. 26-wk increase >20%. Revenue growth >10%. EPS growth >15%.) Among these, Van Knapp suggests to buy only stocks which have been trending upward for 3-4 weeks--and which score well on his Easy Rate system (chapter D-5). When to sell: at a trailing stop-loss of -10%. Van Knapp also has an interesting chapter, persuasively defending "market timing." Van Knapp uses the 150-day SMA (Simple Moving Average) of the S&P as one of eight major market timing indicators. Presumably, these indicators might be applied to ETFs. However Van Knapp does not discuss ETFs and makes no attempt to determine which indicators are more effective. So there is no telling whether the results of his equal-weighted system are significant--might be or might not. Moreover he does not suggest using market timing by itself, but only as an added confirmation to his other systems, or to determine how much of the total portfolio value to be actively invested. Significant empirical evidence: none.#4. Market Timing for Dummies by Joe Duarte. (Dotcom: Joe-Duarte.)Whereas Tom Lydon's "ETF Playbook" only has one play--the Market Timing for Dummies seems to be a true playbook for someone who wants to experiment with every method of market timing and of trend following. However it seems to me, you would just have to try everything in this book for a year before having a clear idea what to do with all this information. I was unable to find any attempt to suggest clearly which are the best methods, or how effective they might be, or to outline a beginner strategy. However the instructions for each strategy are quite clear and seem well worth testing out. Significant empirical evidence: none.#5. Trend Trading for a Living by Thomas Carr. (Dotcom: BefriendTheTrend.)Clear advice on trend-trading with stocks that have over twice the average volatility, and that appear to form long trends. This seems similar to what Van Knapp calls "type M" stocks. Carr then clearly details how to distinguish 5 "bullish" patterns and 5 "bearish" patterns, and how to determine a "buy" signal within each pattern. Carr's advice on when to sell is in chapter 11. Carr describes four methods both for protective selling of unprofitable trades and for claiming profits on profitable trades. However his favorite for both seems to be the Trailing Stop Profit of usually -8%. Carr claims that "studies show it is by far the most profitable." However he fails to reference any such studies. Significant empirical evidence: none.#6. The New Sell and Sell Short by Dr. Alexander Elder. (Author of international bestseller: Trading for a Living.)This seems to be the sort of book you might want to read after you are experienced in all the other trading strategies above. Otherwise, this book is difficult to follow. Seems focused on day trading and presents many ideas and techniques, while usually not giving any specific guidelines. Vaguely seems to endorse every popular style: both trend and counter-trend trading, both value buying and momentum buying, both systematic and discretionary. Elder seems to believe that different methods work better for different people. He himself prefers the freedom of discretion, and unlike Lydon, often advises to modify strategies based on "feelings." It also provided a listing of some of the ETFs available in various sectors although since there are new ETFs appearing almost daily, the author cannot be faulted for not listing more of them than he did.The author's 200-day moving average strategy is certainly easy to understand for the reader but in his efforts to make it appear so simple, he seems to have left out some details that someone might need to know when attempting to implement it. For example, he recommends buying your chosen ETF when it crosses above the 200-day moving average and selling it when it falls below the 200-day moving average line. Simple enough. Unfortunately, he fails to indicate what to do if you're interested in buying an ETF that is already above the 200-day line. When would he recommend still buying it? He mentions that whipsaws can occur but he makes no recommendation as to whether a trader should wait to see whether an ETF that dips below the 200-day moving average line remains there or whether to simply sell and not look back.Although he does make mention of the use of stop loss orders, he makes no recommendations within the book about whether traders should put in a stop loss after an ETF drops by a certain percentage or not. I did visit his website and found that he recommends setting a stop loss at 8% below a recent high. In my opinion, this is the sort of advice that should have been included within the book, but I guess one of the purposes of writing the book was to increase visits to his website.For what its worth, I did visit the website and found it to be a valuable source of additional information regarding ETFs. I anticipate visiting it on a regular basis.

To call this book elementary would be an insult to kindergartners everywhere - this pamphlet disguised as a book has one idea and flogs it through 200 pages of obvious and basic information, available with a ten second search on the internet. The one idea is that investors should get into the market, or a security, when it rises above its 200-day moving average, and get out when it falls below. That's it! The rest is a listing of ETF's that anyone with an internet connection can find instantly, with a dash of self-promotion of Lydon's ETFrends site. To anyone who has studied the market for more than five minutes, this book is a waste of time and money. Apart from the 200-day MA idea, there's nothing useful about trends, entries, exits, risk, money management or any other investing topic.

Yet again I am unable to rate with half stars, or else I would have rated this a 3.5 stars.But torn between 3 and 4, I ultimately leaned towards 3.That doesn't mean that this isn't a good recipe book though, not by any means.I just feel its lacking in some areas.I think others have probably already brought this up, but the biggest issue I find with this is the lack of pictures.Looking at the beautiful cover, I suppose I just expected pictures.Plus, it's a cookbook, yanno? You wanna see something and think "I don't know what that is, but it looks good, so I'll try making it!"With the internet at our fingertips, these days it isn't difficult to search for recipes online.But it can be a bit cumbersome at times, and you may not always know what recipes are out there to even try.Cookbooks typically center around a certain area in cooking (in this case, the dutch oven, specifically for two), and then broadcasts that to its audience.It's easier to find certain types, such as baking cookbooks, stir-fry cookbooks, vegetarian cookbooks, and so on.That fact that this one centered in on the dutch oven really caught my attention, and ultimately a big part of why I chose to get it.The other part was that the book specifically focused on meals for two, and as I'm part of a 2-family-member household, this was ideal.If you cook, you probably have noted that most recipes out there make WAY too much food.It's troublesome, constantly trying to halve or even quarter certain recipes without changing the end result too much.I already own a small collection of cookbooks that have been handed down to me by my great grandmother, and I personally know the appeal of having a physical book with recipes you can mark up and possibly even one day hand down to future generations.My father-in-law gave me a cast iron dutch oven just a few months ago, and I've been in love with it since.It seemed like fate that I would find this book - just too perfect, yanno?Anyways, enough of my ramblings, and onto the cookbook itself!Like I mentioned, this cookbook lacks images.That removes an entire star right there, unfortunately.I can understand wanting to save money, as printing images can be significantly pricier, but even if there had been SOME images, I think it would have been much better than none at all.As for the recipes themselves, I'm fairly pleased.I noticed some people felt that the recipes were too "complex" but I didn't get that impression.If you live in California, or near any large city, it shouldn't be difficult to get the ingredients needed.I'm literally going through the book as I write this review, and the most "foreign" or difficult to get ingredients are things such as ginger, fennel, and sesame oil.Other ingredients are things you likely already have on hand, and if you don't, probably should then, if you're committed to cooking that is.These things are staples you could get anywhere, including cinnamon, cardamom, red pepper flakes, bay leaves, rosemary, mint, basil, etc.Each recipe shows the title at the top, along with a small paragraph describing it, and a quick sidebar you reference for things such as active time, total time, and servings.This is then followed by a neat and concise list of ingredients.Following this is a step-by-step process for making the recipe in simple, clear-cut terms.Most recipes end with a tip, such as "technique tip," "ingredients tip," or "pairing tip."I feel that this layout is exceptional and very well done.Every category page has a full color image (me gusta!) as well as a list of all the recipes contained in that section, so you can easily scan over it to find what you're looking for.Another thing I like about this cookbook is that is splits up the recipes into different categories:- Eggs & Things- Soup, Chowders, & Chilis- Vegetarian- Fish & Shellfish- Poultry- Meat- Breads & DessertsMind you, each and every single recipe (90 total) is meant to be made in your dutch oven, and usually, just that alone.So for one single piece of cookware, the options given are really quite amazing.If you're new to dutch ovens, you'll likely be surprised at just how much you can make in these things.While I obviously can't post any recipes, here are a few of them to get an idea:- Baked French Toast with Sliced Apples (from Eggs & Things)- Butternut Squash Risotto (from Vegetarian)- Manhattan Clam Chowder (from Soups, Chowders, & Chilis)- Tilapia Puttanesca (from Fish & Shellfish)- Chicken and Herb Dumplings (from Poultry)- Pork Fried Rice (from Meat)- One-Pan Fudgy Brownies (from Breads & Desserts)/ / Time to Review! / /[ PROS ] - Beautiful, high quality book with bright, eye-catching colors (for the few images there are, including the cover). - Clear and simple step-by-step directions to accommodate a wide range of cooks with different levels of experience. - All recipes are designed to be made in a single kitchen device, the wonderfully diverse dutch oven, which cuts down on stress and cleanup. - Recipes aren't too complex, but not too simple either. Most ingredients should be available to the mass majority of people. On harder to find ingredients, there are usually tips or suggestions for alternative ingredients. - Recipes are made with 2 people in mind, so you're not left with a ton of leftovers or wasted food. Some of the recipes provide alternative measurements, in case you'd like to make more (this is highly seen in the desserts section, for example). - Overall layout is on point; pages and recipes have a very organized and clean look to them.[ CONS ] - Lacks images; the only images inside the book, while still full-color, full-page shots, are on the main category heading page (one image per each category, rather than each recipe). This definitely takes away a lot of this book's potential at being a 4 or 5 star product. - Recipes mostly include items that you may not have on hand, particularly fruits, veggies, and meats. This means that you should decide in advance what you're going to make in the coming week and shop accordingly. Unless you have a well-stocked fridge of a multitude of different fruits, veggies, and meats, this requires a little thinking ahead.I know this was a hella long review, and I apologize for that!If you have any questions at all, please feel free to comment below and I'd be more than happy to answer to the best of my abilities. : )

Love the recipes in this book, however, for a person that is counting my calories this is not the best. I wish the author would have thought about putting the calorie intake in her book. Especially when this book is not that old. Now a days do you see calorie counts almost everywhere and I wish some cookbooks would consider that. Except from the calorie counts, the recipes in this book are delicious! I also wish there were more pictures in this book showing the food .

Enjoy reading this as I live in small household and have difficulty cooking healthy meals without a ton of leftovers.

lots of variety and choices. needs pictures to help see what final product is supposed to look like. like size of meat slices or how large chopped vegetables, etc. i assume author made all these so why not take a picture of the final dish? some recipes very exotic (spice choices), would prefer a couple more in each category much simpler. recommend on recipes but not happy with lack of pictures, thus only a 3 star.

Recipes seem like they will be good. Flipping through ingredients seem like normal items; nothing too unique that I would have to search for at the store or buy something I won’t use in other recipes.My two dissatisfactions so far are: 1) no nutritional information listed with each recipe 2) no photograph of each finished dish.I like to know the calories, carbs, proteins, fats, and this cookbook does not provide that information. I also like to see the presentation, color, texture, etc of what the end product should resemble.There is interesting Dutch oven history, care and maintenance at the beginning and the appendix has some helpful tips and info as well.

These are not 30-minute meals, and your taste buds will know the difference! Slower cooking with a Dutch oven gives flavors a chance to develop without the overcooked taste from a crock-pot. Several of these recipes can actually yield three servings for those with smaller appetites, which is perfect for a light lunch of leftovers. This will serve us well in our upcoming RV adventure. This book has given me insight into how to reduce my family recipes as well. I gave it 4 stars due to some editing issues. I like that the ingredients are those found in a typical American pantry.

The only thing I a disappointed about is that the photos that precede each section have no reference to what they are. You basically have to guess what that dish might be . Otherwise, the recipes are easy to follow.

I was looking forward to seeing the recipes for two. The overall presentation is good. Colorful pictures easy to follow instructions. For myself I didn’t see any recipes that really hit me. I was disappointed.

We have a child with Down Syndrome & we bought this to read with her preschool-age sister. I like the concept of this book. However, the quality of most of the photos in this book is pretty bad. They're blurry, bad family snapshots. It really detracts from the book. The other thing I should mention is that I found myself having to edit the book as I read to my 3 & 1/2 year old, because on one page, Ben mentions a few fears, including that when his parents go out, they'll never come back. I didn't need to plant that seed in my little one's head. So perhaps the book is geared towards older children. The features common to DS that were mentioned were sometimes odd...for instance, Ben says something about how he might fall down when he runs, or something about his almond shape eyes (but not the crease underneath)...Overall, it's a good concept but I think the writing could use a little tweaking and the photos could use a complete overhaul.

While this is a very simple book with very simple photos, it did the trick on helping our daughter get comfortable with being a wonderful little girl with Down syndrome.

On my quest to find the perfect book to discuss Down syndrome with peers and siblings I cam across 'Hi, I'm Ben'. It's a cute & simple book. It wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but not a disappointment either.

I was very happy with the book, but I was highly disappointed with the shipping. The first copy arrived very damaged and after I shipped it back, the second one was also damaged (although not as badly). The book has a paper cover, so its not very durable, but I wanted to have this book for my daughter who has a sibling with DS.

Awesome book that I have read to my son's class for two years in a row now. Simple concepts for young children but also has the ability to expand concepts through Q & A for kids as they grow.Great resource for me to bring to my son's classroom. !!

This book is really great I recently bought it for a uni assignment to do with early childhood and it was a great book to share. I like this book because it focuses on ben as a child and not a child with a disability. It's a very positive book it draws on ben's experiences of being a child that a child without a disability would encounter and it also discusses briefly the disability but it's done in such a positive way. I would definitely recommend it.

This is a cute little book that introduces Down's Syndrome to young children in an easy to understand way. Good photos and child friendly writing. Love it!

I've read every book there is on gold and silver and this is the best by a country mile. If you are new to this topic, this book may change your life. Not only will you learn everything you need to know about HOW to invest in gold and silver, you'll also learn WHY. If the buffoonery of our politicians and Wall St have left you scratching your head and wondering what the hell is going on, Maloney's insights into monetary history will make things crystal clear. History repeats, but with a little twist each time. It's wonderfully written, and the recent updates are a great addition to what has become the gold and silver bible. Can't recommend this highly enough, get yourself a copy now.

The underlying premise of this book is that the collapse of Western Civilization will be an orderly one in a long slow descent to the bottom. That those with foresight to accumulate precious metals will be allowed by societal pressures to enjoy the blighted rewards of their investment schemes among the disorder around them (this is why elitist are allegedly building doomsday bunkers) as the hordes of the have-nots rage.This book is a good read though peeling the blinders back from one's eye's to the world's selfishness.Recommended.

Mr. Maloney condenses years worth of research and study into a book for the lay person. I highly recommend it. I also highly recommend his You Tube channel. It was because of Mr. Maloney's work that I bought both gold and silver.

I wanted to educate myself about precious metal basics and understand how/what to do with metals you own physically. The book does a good job on that as well as explain various reporting and IRS related information when buying/selling physical precious metals. There is also historical background about currency (paper money) and precious metals and economics.I found some of the precious metal history and economic arguments for precious metals holding their value to be useful. However, the book does do a little of self promotion and public relations for the author and his company, which I didn't like.

This author has been instrumental in guiding me to investing and increasing my knowledge base several fold. This book is my first in the precious metals segment and cant say anything more than being a tremendous blessing. He is the best at explaining in the industry and is very very interesting and knowledgeable.

I started following Mike a couple months ago and I'll have to say him and his team of analyst do a great job of providing truth pertaining to monetary history and the correlating connection with gold and silver. In the beginning of the book it takes you into multiple monetary history and gradually educate you throughout the times and how gold and silver has always been the remaining asset to with stand the economic upheaval of the age. Many more in the book for you to find out.

I had became interested in precious metals after seeing Maloney’s videos on YouTube and I wanted to learn more about why they were a prime investment. In this book I learned about the fragile state of the economy with its multiple bubbles and neverending inflation. Mike makes a good case for Gold and Silver as sound money, citing historical perspective as well as showing that the stock market has not been as lucrative as believed due to inflation. I would recommend this book to those interested in precious metals but who want more information before fully investing.

If you are asking yourself "Why buy gold?", then this will answer your question. The historical perspective was very educational and makes sense of the author's point of view. I definitely now know more about how our monetary system works. I'm glad I bought it.

the book is standard grad school material, arrived very fast

Great read for refining medical interview skills to get to the meat and potatoes of what is going on with a client.

I am very pleased with my purchase. I bought this book to read on my own...I was introduced to it by a former instructor. The book is very informative and defintely a must if you're going into the medical field where you will have to deal with patients on a regular basis.

very medical model, which is pretty old school

Obviously there are some sections that aren't very relevant to animals but as a veterinarian I felt like I learned a lot about how to approach medical history taking and the common emotions and challenges that are inherent in the subject. People treat their pets as family fairly often nowadays and keeping this in mind veterinary care becomes a lot more like care for a person that is unable to make health decisions for themself. There is a decent amount of time spent on this topic which was helpful for me to read. I also enjoyed the way the book was layed out and the writing style, it made it much easier to read and even enjoyable instead of being dry like most textbooks.
