From School Library Journal

Gr 4–8—This evocatively told, carefully researched memoir-in-verse is the story of a group of 12 teenagers from Clinton, TN, who, in 1956, were among the first black students to pave the way for school integration. Free verse and formal poetry, along with newspaper headlines, snippets of legislation, and other primary sources about national and local history are mixed with Boyce's first-person narrative. The book opens with an overview of life in segregated Clinton and the national events leading up to the desegregation of Clinton High. The rest of the work follows the four months in the fall of 1956 when Boyce and the other 11 teens attended Clinton High. They faced angry white mobs outside the school, constant harassment from white classmates, and a hostile principal who viewed integration as a legal choice rather than a moral one. The book includes an introduction and epilogue, authors' notes, brief biographies of the involved students, photographs, a time line, and a bibliography. The writing invites readers to cheer on Boyce for her optimism and her stubbornness in the face of racism, without singling her out as a solitary hero. This story adeptly shows readers that, like the Clinton Twelve, they too can be part of something greater than themselves. VERDICT A must-buy for tweens and teens, especially where novels-in-verse are popular.—Erica Ruscio, formerly at Rockport Public Library, MA

Only five stars? Nope. Infinite stars for this compelling, beautifully-composed masterpiece, co-written by one of the original Clinton 12, Jo Ann Allen Boyce, and author Debbie Levy.I read this book cover-to-cover in one sitting, from the dedication and the introduction through the authors’ notes, scrapbook and further reading. I wanted to know every scrap of information about this group of courageous young people who came before the Little Rock 9 (this would be so incredible to pair with The Lions of Little Rock) and Ruby Bridges, yet few people know their story. It is indeed Jo Ann’s story that amazed, gripped, and haunted me. Her first-person perspective was powerful enough, but then for Allen Boyce - with Levy - to choose so many different poetic forms in which to tell only made her story more fascinating. Switching from lyrical free-verse to pounding rhythmic and rhyming quartets when true events were at their most highly-charged? I’ve never seen this before in a narrative nonfiction and I was unequivocally blown away. This is by far one of the best books I’ve ever read and definitely one of 2019’s best. I will proudly carry This Promise of Change: One Girl’s Story in the Fight for School Equality on the shelves of my classroom library. It is an imperative read.

Incredible story that was somehow burried in our American history! This is not just a young adults book, this is an ADULT book. It is an easy and enjoyable read, but yet it contains so much information about this brave group of young people who paved their way, under very tense circumstances, into the civil rights movement. The book is done in prose, which really works to keep it light hearted but also very real and touching. It also maintains a positive perspective, which is refreshing. I loved every second of reading this book and could not put it down!

This book is about my hometown. It's well written, easy to read and written from the personal perspective of one who experienced the desegregation of the first public school in Tennessee. I know and have much admiration for the author.

I could not put this book down. My family is from Clinton, TN and I’ve always heard about the brave “Clinton 12”. Thank you, Jo Ann Allen Boyce, for sharing your journey with us.

Eye opening for someone who grew up in this area.

What a beautifully written, powerful story! A must-read! Loved it!

This book is beautifully written about an ugly time in my hometown. What an inspirational book. Racism is contagious ...but so is kindness and love.

School integration and the Deep South have quite the history that’s far too recent for my tastes. When Georgia’s resistance to integration dragged on into the 1970s and forced the federal government to get involved, my own mother had to fight to stay in public school with her friends; my great-grandparents tried to put her in a private school that had been set up solely so the most racist of white parents wouldn’t have to let their children be taught alongside black kids. But we ain’t here to talk about my mom’s experience. We’re here for brave, brilliant people like Jo Ann Allen Boyce and her perspective on a problem that’s never really gone away. It’s equal parts historical memoir and an incitement to work hard right now for change.Teenage Jo Ann Allen wasn’t that happy about segregation, as you might gather from just the first few pages. But she tried to look on the bright side of things like her dad and found peace with the way things were in Clinton, Tennessee. Not satisfaction, merely peace. Then Brown v. Board‘s ruling comes down and a local judge reversing his ruling on a previous case means Jo Ann and eleven other teens will be integrating Clinton High School. If you know your history, you know what follows: riots over Labor Day, a bombing in 1958, and just two of the Clinton Twelve staying at the school until graduation. What you don’t know until you read This Promise of Change was how it firsthand felt to be a black girl charged to be one of twelve integrating a public high school in the Deep South–making Allen and her peers the second group to do so after the tiny town of Charleston, Arkansas did the same in 1954. This was before Little Rock and Ruby Bridges as well as at the tail end of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. And here we have Jo Ann, a teenage girl who wants to become a nurse and loves to sing.Exquisitely detailed notes and appendices at the end of the book both highlight the musical nature of the book’s free verse and outline those choices. Some chapters are traditional poetry with rhyme schemes you’ll remember from English class and others are closer to freeform verse. Both ways, readers will get wrapped up in the notes. There will be some serious temptation to read some of the chapters out loud to fully enjoy the rhythm and rhyme! If you’re white like me, you might be in danger of looking at the white people in Jo Ann’s life and thinking “oh yay, there’s a decent human being!” DON’T FALL FOR IT. Most of those same white people, like Clinton High’s principal and one of the teachers, don’t want black children in their school at all but are going with it because that’s the new law of the land. They want to be law-abiding citizens, but they’d prefer to stay segregated. Their part in enrolling and keeping the kids in Clinton High School deserves no praise whatsoever. Heck, it makes me furious on the students’ behalf!Look. If someone is only advocating for a human being’s rights because the law says they should, that person is not an ally. For instance, someone who’s pro-gay rights because it’s the law but privately thinks gay people shouldn’t be allowed to get married or have job security nationwide? That’s not a good citizen, that’s a phony. The integration of Clinton High School was a moment in a movement that’s still not over. Thanks to redlining and gentrification, plenty of public schools are still segregated in addition to entire towns! Mom’s hometown is still so segregated by so-called “tradition” that there are two different funeral homes and which one you end up in when you die depends on what color your skin is.This Promise of Change hosts decades of experience and centuries of pain in the four-month period Jo Ann spent as a Clinton High School student. It’s both a reflection and a call to action beautifully composed in verse and it’s the kind of book that deserves pairing with any history of the civil rights movement. (That also requires teachers who actually teach about the civil rights movement, which most of mine did not because they were too busy whitewashing things and only giving us secondhand/thirdhand sources about the experiences of POC in the US. Schools: still racist!)

Author's life in many ways mirrors my own early years. Can vouch for both his experiences and conclusions. Good primer text. Don't let the title throw you off. Good wand & staff details for the 'Harry Potter' types but NOT written by a Christian pretender. For MANY 'Craft traditions, certain sexual aspects are a sacrament and a Confirmation-like rite of passage... independent of conception procreation. Good 'unvarnished' overview. Sheela-na-gig. This is the third? fourth? textbook I've used out of the Cengage series. I have Principles of Information Security and Security+ Guide to Network Security Fundamentals sitting on my shelf across the room, and I think there's another book in the same series sitting around here somewhere. The books look similar and have very similar content. There's a little more of this in this one and a little more of that in that one, but the content isn't radically different. If you've mastered one book, you probably can do pretty well on tests taken out of the others. In fact, on a couple questions where I couldn't recall a factoid and couldn't find it in this book, I found it in one of my old textbooks. If this is the first of these similar texts you use, you'll learn a lot: if it's not, you'll get a lot of review. (To be fair, I'm rock-solid on what's covered!)Unfortunately, the exercises at the ends of the chapters are a hot mess. It wasn't always clear to me what the review questions were getting at, and when the specific answers they're looking for aren't stated clearly, it's all a big guessing game and not a fun one.It was the same with some of the real world exercises and hands-on projects.By far the worst problem, however, is the fact that this book is so far out of date. Project 4-1 tells you that you need a computer running Windows XP or Vista. Project 5-1 needs Vista or XP SP3 *headdesk* Many of the exercises couldn't be completed on my Windows 8 computer. I tried to approximate them as best I could, but whatever I was supposed to find often wasn't where it had been in earlier versions of Windows, and what I got looked drastically different from what the book said. The running case project calls for VirtualBox 3.2.6 for Windows hosts. The current version appears to be 4.3.2 and 3.2.6 isn't available even in legacy builds (although older, unsupported versions are available.) No worries about that because the book also calls for Vyatta VC6.0 - Virtualization ISO for the Vyatta software firewall application that you're supposed to run in VirtualBox. The website given redirects to that of the company that seems to have absorbed or bought out Vyatta. I wasn't able to locate the software firewall. This running case project continues through the book, leaving the student unable to complete a lot of the hands-on exercises that would have given practical skills that weren't covered in the text or in the other books I've used. A pity, because I would have liked to get the experience.

Needed this book for a course i'm taking. Turns out I like the ebook version so I can multitask and read at the same time. Purchasing this book on Amazon allowed me to get the etextbook alot cheaper than other sources plus the hardcopy.

Good book for an overview of the administrative side of things. This will not make you an expert but is great for those who are in IT some managerial or practice management capacity.

This was required by my community college which offers an excellent Cisco curriculum. I can't for the life of me figure out why they chose this book. It is very high level and doesn't cover anything needed to perform the labs in the class or explain the nuts and bolts of firewalls. The price is just stupid and unjustifiable. I think its just a money maker for the colleges somehow. Not sure how but given the price in relation to the material covered it just doesn't make any sense. It might be OK for someone who is just curious about what a firewall is and wants an overview.

Worked great.

Took seconds to pop up in my kindle library. Very pleased.

Great book!

Received the book in great condition, easy to understand book.

Have you ever wanted a little adventure but a) your partner didn't want to go there or b) you didn't have any friend or family member who could travel with you or c) you wanted something refreshingly different, but not too far away? But you were just a bit nervous about venturing out on your own, especially if it meant crossing the border into the country next door?If you are that curious but a bit worried future solo-traveler, this is the book for you. Marie curbed her concerns and drove from her Pennsylvania home to explore the beautiful Maritime provinces of Canada -- New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. What she found surprised and delighted her. Along the way she discovers why the sites beloved by tourists have such perennial appeal...but also takes you off the beaten path. And as she travel, her spirit of adventure grows. A delightful read, whether you would love to take a vacation in Atlantic Canada, or simply enjoy Marie's very good company from the comforts of your favourite armchair! Full disclosure: I recently retired to this part of Canada, drawn by the spectacular beauty and friendliness of the people and I'll be using Marie's wonderful guidebook to ramble off to parts of it I haven't discovered yet!

I read this book on the weekend and it was a welcome escape from the strain of the week into remote Canada. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the various locations the author visited; she writes so well that I could picture being in Canada. She also added photos, which are magnificent.I'm interested in traveling to Canada because I have family there whom I've never met, and I personally love travelling on my own. I could appreciate the author's perspective of how much more freedom and flexibility solo travel offers. She mentions that travelling in itself breaks behavior patterns and challenges the traveller out of his or her comfort zone, which I always found true. It's a helpful and healing thing to do when stuck in unsatisfying patterns. What's great about this book is that the author offers very sound travelling advice. You can use this book to learn about travelling anywhere on your own. She offers resources for this specific area of her trip, even historical pointers like the explosion in Halifax in 1917 and the reason why Halifax gives Boston a christmas tree every year since, but she also lists resources and checklists for organizing solo travel. Her checklists impressed me the most. Have you thought of letting your credit card company know that you are going to travel in a certain area and during a certain time, so your credit card isn't suddenly blocked because the charges look fraudulent? I certainly haven't. She shares a wealth of practical ideas. There's much to learn from this resourceful traveller about peace-of-mind vacationing. The book is a respit and a treasure trove. Very well written, detailed, practical and entertaining. I returned to work on Monday rested, as if I had been on a trip myself.

I missed far too much cruising up the coastline year before last as this wonderful book brought to light! I have got to go back one day and see/experience the sights made mention in this great memoir including the heavily Scottish inspired island of Cape Breton, the iconic Flowerpot Rocks, the L. M. Montgomery homestead site (may want to stay in the very same Fairways Cottages, too) and the Fortress of Louisbourg (kicking myself for missing this the first go around as author brought this place to life for me). Many fine pictures were included in her travels as well, tips were also much appreciated, and renewed my interest in researching the history behind the explosion of the SS Mont-Blanc, the search for the buried treasure at Oak Island, and the Viking settlement of L'Anse aux Meadows. Make this one travel book I would highly recommend and enjoyed having music of the Dropkick Murphys playing in the background as it made the reading even more special. Excellent!

This book is aimed at a novice traveler, it covers a lot of common sense basics. However, in addition t the basics it has some pretty good insight and tips that apply to experienced traveler like myself. I live in North East so we often take drives to Canada and have been to some of the places mentioned in the book (but not all) and she gave me some pretty good ideas. It was interesting to read her take on the places I have been to as it allowed me to compare her thoughts to mine, and I found her opinions of the familiar places similar to mine. The author's interest run similar to mine - she loves music and history, she is not a rugged outdoors person looking for a physically challenging vacation doing hiking, biking, or kayaking. If that matches your interests this book is a good match for you.The author provides a personal perspective from some very minor points to larger insights, sometimes she is pretty chatty and sounds like talking to a girlfriend who wants to share everything whether it is big or small. Overall this type of perspective is not what you cannot find in a typical guidebook or web site and if her interests match yours (i.e. cultural activities rather than physical activities) this book is useful.Ali Julia review

When Kids Can't Read: What Teachers Can Do: A Guide for Teachers 6-12

Review

“If I had to recommend just one book to middle and secondary teachers working to support struggling readers, this would have to be the book. When Kids Cant Read, What Teachers Can Do is a comprehensive handbook filled with practical strategies that teachers of all subjects can use to make reading skills transparent and accessible to adolescents. Blending theory with practice throughout, Kylene Beers moves teachers from assessment to instruction from describing dependent reading behaviours to suggesting ways to help students with vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, word recognition, response to text, and so much more. But its not just the strategies that make this book so valuable. Its the invitations to step inside a classroom and eavesdrop on teacher/student interactions. Its the student profiles, the if/then charts, the extensive booklists and, of course, the experiences of a brilliant reading teacher. This is simply the best book published to date to support struggling adolescent readers!”–Gillda Leitenberg,District-wide Coordinator, English/LiteracyToronto District School Board

Very helpful for me even though I've been teaching middle school English for 12 years. Great strategies to really get them to think

I teach 4th grade, so I'm not exactly the target audience. I'm about to start my third year teaching, and I wanted some new strategies to try for my struggling readers. This book is exactly what I needed. I can see these strategies working as low as 4th grade. (Not K-3) I love that the book sticks to traditional wisdom, but it tells you exactly what to do in the classroom. It is extremely practical. It tells you what to do for them before, during, and after reading to support the reader, but the author has teachers to get the students to do the comprehending. The author helps teachers to see how to help without doing the work for the students. The book also addresses vocabulary, fluency, spelling, and choosing the right books. I also enjoyed the style of the book. It is full of stories, so I had no trouble reading several chapters in one sitting.

I cannot speak on behalf of those with years upon years of experience teaching, so I will just address how it has benefited me. I was assigned this book for a class - and while the class itself has proved to be less than helpful, this text is full of great reading and teaching strategies that can be used in the classroom. I have used several frontloading, comprehension and vocabulary strategies from this text and they were all extremely successful - students enjoyed doing them (I get requests for the "tea party" exercise!) and they retained the information.Beers' text has been a great resource to me, and to many of my fellow classmates regardless of their content area. I have tried some of the exercises and techniques in my ELA and Social Studies student teaching placements with great success. If nothing else, this book presents a lot of useful information and experience to consider when it comes to teaching literacy. I have read a lot of books on teaching, and this one has been the most real-world applicable.

I'm a Title 1 teacher in Oregon, and I work with the types of readers that Kylene Beers talks about in her book "When Kids Can't Read: What Teachers Can Do". I found her book to be loaded with practical, "use in your classroom the next day" ideas that are easy to implement. Now, my school is an elementary school, and initially I avoided this book due to the "Guide for Teachers 6-12" label on it. Boy, was I wrong. While the focus of her book is for middle and high school teachers, most of her techniques are excellent techniques for the younger learners as well, especially the fifth grade students that I'm working with. She has taken many of the concepts we use in elementary school and upgraded them for older kids; but good teaching is good teaching, no matter what you are trying to do.This book is so practical, on the inside front cover, you are given a simple chart that list reading problems that kids have, and the chapter that you can immediately turn to in order to get ideas! It can't get any friendlier than that. However, I also suggest a more thorough read through of this content. Beers talks throughout the book of a student named George that she taught early in her career, before she knew much about teaching. Sprinkled through the text, before and after each chapter, write writes lovingly to George about how she failed him time and time again, in direct relation to the content of the chapter. As a teacher, looking back on my own career, I can totally relate to that. If I knew then what I know now... the letters become Beers "mea culpa", and they are a beautiful addition to the text.I highly recommend this book for ANY teacher struggling to teach struggling readers reading. It's practical, easy to use, and loaded with great ideas.

This is, at least for me, an paradigm-shifting book. Beers' amazingly humble, conversational style of presenting anecdotes, research and techniques appealed to me in ways that other reading texts- Stephanie Harvey, Lucy Caulkins, both of whom I find useful, just not particularly user-friendly and streamlined, have not. I also love that Beers is so encouraging of writing across the curriculum. I agree with her that layering writing assignments into content delivery serves the students, as well as over-burdened teachers- far better than stand-alone tasks that merely require of the student a downloading of information onto worksheets or standardized tests. My sole complaint is teacher's of younger students will have to connect the dots for themselves- not too bad given it was not in the scope of Beers' book. I teach elementary ELA, and found it very useful. Can't wait to use some if the gems in the coming year!

Beers frames each chapter with a brief letter to a former student, expressing a generous regret for the ways she feels she failed him when she was a new teacher. These letters strike to my heart, as the weaknesses she identifies in her own early teaching strategies echo every concern I've had as a student of English education. Beers not only explains how to remedy these concerns by telling you HOW to teach better, she models the strategies for you by providing transcripts of actual teaching experiences (both the good and the bad) to SHOW you how much difference these strategies make. She covers everything in this book, it seems. This is a must read for any English teacher, whether preparing to enter the field or already practicing.

This book is designed for teachers. It discusses problems that students often have with reading from the author's experience and then gives excellent strategies to combat that specific problem. There are multiple ideas per chapter which make it easy to customize for any classroom. I used the strategies in both a middle school classroom and high school classroom. There is also an index in the back so you can easily find any strategy. A MUST HAVE FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS! (Especially any teacher in the first 5 years of teaching.)
