I’m having a terrible time reading this book. It’s a required textbook but unlike others it isn’t written in a way to grab your attention. It is small and good print so it would be easy to read. However just getting through two pages takes me forever.

This book is not worth the price because it is very small and looks like a chapter book. They overcharge so much for a used book with less than a hundred pages.

The title of this book alone makes it interesting. A Jewish Soldier in Hitler’s Army? It does make for an unlikely warrior and a very interesting story.The author was born German. Like most Europeans his family history was quite rich and complicated with intermarriage among faiths. With this in mind he was about, according to him, a fourth Jewish in blood. He was also a member of the aristocracy with a mother who held the rank of Baroness.As complicated as this sounds it’s important to the history of the book. As it turns out this man’s situation was not completely uncommon given the totality of the German war experience. There were others much like him who served the nation during a time of great distress. The Nazi system of government even had procedures to cover this type of situation.One of the more interesting aspects of this book concerns the use radio technology. The author was a radio enthusiast who built his own small scale radios in his youth. This skill allowed him a unique position within any unit as he could work with one of the more technical systems in the army. In his case he went to an infantry unit on the Eastern front. It must have been like no other place on earth or in history.The author does a wonderful job describing his experience on the Eastern front. At times he runs a radio and others he grabs his rifle and returns fire on advancing Russians. This is where the book really finds its stride. The first person account of the infantry war with Russia is fairly rare among history books.Interestingly enough, while he was on the Eastern front, the authors mother was playing a role in the resistance by hiding Jews within her own home. It is unclear how many lives she saved. But one thing is clear, t was deadly serious work. With one slip up the entire family could have been guilty of a major crime. She was a remarkably strong willed woman and it was interesting to learn something about her experiences in the war.I’ll leave the end of the book for the reader to enjoy. But the end is fairly typical of many of the experiences of German soldiers at the end of the war. The book does a great job of explaining the fall of German and conditions people endured. It shows the clear heavy lose the people suffered.For more information regarding the end of the war in Germany I would strongly suggest reading Fur Volk and Fuhrer by Erwin Bartman. I would also suggest reading the classic The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer for more first person accounts of the German experience in World War Two on the Eastern front.

Approximately 150,000 Jew soldiers served in Hitler's Wehrmacht in World War II. This is the story of one such soldier, Georg Rauch, from Austria. It is a very well written and moving story. Rauch served on the Eastern Front until he was captured. He served a number of years in Soviet prison camps and was fortunate to be amongst the first group of German soldiers released by the Red Army. Of the millions of Hitler's soldiers captured by the Russians, only a very small percentage survived to return to Germany. This book is highly recommended for those interested in the fate of German Jews in World War II, the Wehrmacht, and the Eastern Front.

This book provided a different perspective of the German soldiers in World War II. This book focused on a Jewish soldier but the perspective presented could have been any of the soldiers thrown into a cause that they probably didn't understand and a war they probably didn't agree with.

I enjoyed the perspective of this book. It was written from the viewpoint of a "normal" person who had to fight in a war in which he did not believe, in fact, he was against it. I would have loved to learn more about his mother's activities- while the author was consigned to Hitler's army, she was rescuing Jews. Love that.

An uplifting story about a Jewish Soldier in Hitler's Army? This was not what I expected. I felt that there would be a lot of sadness and self pity, but Rauch seems like he was a really positive man in his youth. I have bought this book for several people because I think that it is a good story about the horrors and realities of war while offering a lot of grit, positivity, and problem solving.

I have been brought up reading and hearing about WWII from the American point of view. Unlikely Warrior gave me a look at the German army battling on the Russian front. It points out that our enemies suffered as much as our troops did and the war through the eyes of the common soldier. A great book.

Excellent book. Large print making reading easy.

Unbelievable that someone ended up in this position. He really had no choice. He was brilliant about preserving his own life. He had to be a very bright man. Everyone should read this to understand what a tough life war involved soldiers live.

Yes, its Traveller, and yes its Babylon 5, two great tastes that...did not mix especially well in this case. In all fairness, I do not have the core rules for the Mongoose iteration of Traveller, but I do have them from the half-sheet sized booklets of first edition, GURPS, Marc Miller's M0, and TNE; frankly, the core Mongoose rules aren't really necessary to understand what this book contains if you have the original or (especially) the GURPS Traveller rule sets.There are deck plans for a selection of vessels, ranging from fighters to the larger capital ships--civil vessels, merchantmen, heavy explorers like the Cortez-class, and the station itself are not present--from the Earth Alliance, Minbari, Narn, Centari, and an eclectic mix from the Non-Aligned Worlds, Shadows and Vorlons. Yes, I understand that the title of the book is *Warships* of Babylon 5, but in both Traveller and B5, trade protection and interdiction are core reasons for having a fleet; lacking soft targets to ambush or protect from attack misses a key concept to both continua.If you have any familiarity with the old Agents of Gaming "Babylon 5 Wars" game line, there are very large differences between how the same ship is represented in game terms and background between the two systems. In my personal opinion, the B5 Wars iterations better realizes what was seen in the TV series than their Mongoose counterpart. Part of this is a matter of interpreting what a given platform is capable of and what it is armed with, but there is a greater problem--to my mind at least--in that the shape (and armament) of a vessel as seen in the B5 TV series does not mesh well with the technological demands inherent with Traveller, and how Mongoose chose to deal with these conflicts was not handled gracefully. As a result, the internal layout of a ship may be put through some rather torturous processes to match the exterior profile and still meet the dictates of the Traveller system.The two universes have similar concepts and some convergent evolution, but here it is a poorly executed example of old arguments in fandom akin to the classic "Star Trek's Enterprise vs. an Imperial Star Destroyer". While a fun exercise to theorycraft, it is ultimately pointless as the two cannot function in the same environment due to their being conceived upon wildly different assumptions, and most efforts to force them into the same system will likely to fail to do justice to either. While it may well be possible to bring Babylon 5 into the Traveller universe, I think Mongoose failed to do a particularly good job of it with this book.

While the premise of the story is inspired; the story itself was very uninspiring.Accepted that the PA Celine set up the scene with Dan, but considering the condition that Helen caught them in- cannot understand Dan's insistence that she should have trusted him. It was a wonder that she did not kill them!! Could not understand how Dan could re-employ Celine , no matter how good she is at her job. This totally turns me off. Dan found it more difficult to do without Celine (at work), than without his wife ..... what the *&^/#. In fact for a large part of the book he seemed to be happy to be separate from his wife ....!! and the way he thinks they should work around it .......*^%#, what was the author thinking .....Considering that Helen still wanted to make it work (before she knew for sure that Dan was not unfaithful), shows the depth of her feelings. Dan's rejections - even with his so-called past, shows him to be centered on himself only. Also, he keeps blaming his wife - why?Helen is hormonal and hysterical a lot of the time; understandable as she is pregnant with twins and going thru' the worst phase in her marriage.I could not enjoy the story.

What happened when the wife walks into her home and finds both her husband and his PA undressed? The answer is to file for divorce. But when they find out that she is pregnant with not one but two babies it will be hard to forgive. Especially when he demands to be there for the babies. But the trust is broken. How to mend it? That is what this story was about.

Helen and Dan seem to have drifted apart not taking time to spend on their relationship. So of course when she comes home to find another woman's clothes strung out on the steps leading to their bedroom and then to actually see the woman there . . . well it doesn't look good at all. Sounded very intriguing and full of angst, right? The other woman was Dan's secretary and he seems intent on blaming her for the whole scenario. Of course, Helen isn't buying it. Why wouldn't another woman want her hot husband? Dan gets very upset that Helen doesn't believe him and he quickly fires his secretary.Then he turns it around to blame her by claiming his love has been thrown back in his face a lot. He wants unconditional love and his child will be the one shot at that. Seriously, that sounds a bit selfish to me. Dan comes up w/ a brilliant solution so that he can still be there in the house for his children. Helen comes up w/ her own scheme and agrees to his plan.It failed in several points for me though.**SPOILERS** I felt like Dan truly loved Helen, okay I wanted to feel that, but after dismissing his secretary he hires her back WITH MORE PAY (and she will be made partner) because he needs her. Dan can NOT function w/out this manipulative OW??!! No one else in the entire world of HPland could be helpful to this man? I wanted to believe Dan loves Helen, but to hire back this POW OW was very distasteful on his part and to not even tell his wife - smacks of keeping secrets. He let go of his pride for OW, but not for his wife.It looked really bad for Dan because his explanation didn't hold water either. Why in the world would OW take his clothes w/ her? That made no sense to me after all they are in his house and he could just put on other clothes, of course it wouldn't go w/ his story of a spill though since there was no evidence. He is very upset and angry that Helen won't believe him.There is a text from OW that Helen finds later that doesn't sound good and it is signed "Love". BTW do secretaries sign off like that?Dan wants OW to tell the truth, but she is ashamed - she eventually agrees though. Dan also wants Helen and OW to be "happy family" - really he wants her to go to OW's wedding! Helen of course starts to believe Dan - has to as the pages are drawing to a close.OW wants forgiveness so that she could feel clean and decent after what she did. Dan wants Helen to give that forgiveness as well. Nice guy who was so concerned for the way his children would be raised and he thought blaming their mom for manipulations of OW is a good thing?! ok technically it wasn't all OW's fault Idiot forgives this woman for destroying their marriage and practically destroying their children's family as well w/ her manipulations. Oh and Helen is fantastic because she forgives OW. Guess I'm not. I can't believe he could hold such anger towards his wife for not believing him but so quickly forgive the OW.

About the Author

She worked as a facilitator for the Complete Health Improvement Program in Walla Walla, Washington, giving cooking demonstrations and helping patients transition to a plant-based lifestyle. Currently, she works as a Registered Dietitian, Diabetes Specialist, in Okanogan, WA helping individuals to overcome chronic disease through dietary changes.

As a fellow dietitian, I know the importance of good nutrition, especially during strenuous exercise. Anna's guide lays out what you need to know about the benefits of a plant-based diet for endurance hiking in a comprehensive and understandable way. Not only does she explain the "why," but she also shows you the "how" in a way that will help everyone from beginners to experts. Her recipes and sample meal plan inspire me to start planning my next trip. Highly recommended for anyone interested in maximizing their next hiking (or even camping!) experience.

A pretty good guide for plant-based diets on trail with a specific emphasis on thru-hiking. Too often are backpacking cookbooks based on overnighters or just a few days. I especially appreciate the note on 'drawing the line', and that it is better to eat something rather than nothing at all, if you must break your vegan diet on trail. The recipes are fairly standard though---nothing I haven't found online already. Granola, curry, lentil stew, etc. I do wish more vegan backpackers would dive into the wonderful world of Butler's Soy Curls.

Although not a vegan myself, I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone interested in eating more healthy and delicious food on the trail. As a dehydrating novice, it was an excellent guide and inspiration to start making my own hiking food. I’ve since trail tested several of the recipes and started trying out my own recipes on overnight and longer backpacking trips.

I am vegan, but have resorted to vegan junk food far too many times to satisfy my hiker hunger. I have been looking for a way to add calories and quality nutrients to my trail menu so that I can actually replace the minerals, vitamins, protein, etc. that I used up during the day's trek.I enjoyed this book and it was just enough to get me excited about dehydrating and taking my meals on an upcoming, albeit, much shorter backpacking trip than the PCT. There were enough recipes to get me started, but not so many that I spent too much time thumbing through (clicking through?) meals to try out. I would have given a 5 star if there were just a few more recipes...but I did appreciate the links offered to help me find more. I am excited about this after walking the El Camino in Spain and having beer and olives for lunch too often! :DPatti

I really liked the practical information about maintaining a health plant based diet. Time for me to get my dehydrator going! The recipes look yummy and I will be trying them out on my next hike.
