I read this book briefly in the past. But recently, I have thoroughly re-studied this book in about two months time. The book is an old grandma book in the computer age. But interestingly, the ideas and design principles are still very applicable when working on complex concurrent systems. The patterns described in the book such as Active Object/Proactor/Async Completion Token/Interceptor/Half Sync & Half Async are used extensively in my daily work. By reading the book, I have a new level of understanding on these patterns.That being said, the author has been very wordy when explaining a simple idea and some of the examples are bit confusing. To fully grasp the ideas of the patterns, readers need patience and might have to review it a few times. More importantly, the examples used to illustrate patterns are tightly tied to a particular OS feature and make the pattern less meaningful in a broad sense. In fact, many patterns described in the book can be applied to a wider and more general context. For example, Acceptor/Connector can be applied to telephony application e.g. SIP or P2P communications systems to model the initiator and receiver. The Proactor/Async Completion Token can be applied to build electronic trading system where orders are filled asynchronously, also async operation processor within the Proactor can be implemented in the application level. In addition, the downloadable papers from author's web site explain acceptor/connector and leader/follower patterns (e.g. Bound variant etc) better than the book though the book explains other patterns well.Comparing with GOF book, this book has illustrated some of the architectural level patterns which minimize locking and increase the efficiency for concurrent system. Surprisingly, this book receives much less reviews comparing to GOF design pattern books which is more related to micro level design strategies. I believe that this book is heavily under-rated.After finishing the book, I like the book very much and bought a used one for a much cheaper price than the original $90 so I can have all patterns in one collection. Overall, it is a great book and highly recommended.

This is an amazing book. A little dry, but amazing. It will definitely change your way of approaching problems. It is highly recommended that you read the GoF pattern book in parallel with this book.

With so many patterns books out there written by little pikers who've probably never worked on a codebase of more than a thousand lines, this is a gust of fresh air. The first volume in this series is one of the great patterns books. The only knock I could offer on this book is that it is slanted a little toward the net equivalent of a kernel mechanic: in this day and age of the container as king, not many of us are doing thread locking on sockets (thank you Sun!). That said, these are intelligent examinations of patterns that are very realistic. I just reread the section on asynchronous notification mechanisms and the trade-offs between implementing a 'double observer' and other variations and was struck by the degree to which the material had been thought through and all the logical dependencies intelligently communicated. If you want to see what patterns look like when they are in the hands of seriously bright people, not some book junk of the month JC dropout, tune in here.

This book summarizes some important distributed systems patterns researchers have identified in recent years. In that sense it is a necessary contribution to the software engineering literature.However, the examples are at times unclear and the author does not always motivate them convincingly. From a technical writing perspective, the passive voice plagues this book from start to end, forcing readers to stop and reread sections to make sense of convoluted prose.

The book is a solid amount of images and the tree's themselves are all very unique - though more info about the tree's themselves could have been written - especially considering how much white space there is. There are some real gem's no doubt, with great detail and composition. However, it seems this photographer has her own artistic style of producing the images that are either nicely detailed, highly grainy, or washed out. There are too many of these grainy/washed images for my liking. I'd much prefer to see some of these tree's in greater detail and study their intricate bark lines. I understand some (or many) may love this style, but I feel for the price there should be larger and higher resolution versions instead. It might be more acceptable if some of the images were in color but alas they're all sepia or black and white. I've attached a few closeup images to help you get an idea.

Photographer Beth Moon's "Ancient Trees" is the unique product of an unusual quest, to capture in beautiful black and white the images of many ancient trees, from Britain to the United States, to Cambodia, Africa, and beyond. This well-executed coffee-table format allows the viewer to approach each unique tree on its own terms, to be appreciated for its age and its disposition. Some grace churchyards, some inhabit monuments such as Angkor Wat, and some are to be found with others of their kind. The book features a couple of short essays and an index of the pictures, but mostly this book is about the trees. Recommended.

This is far more art than reference or trees/woodworking. Moon took gorgeous pictures of some amazing trees & then processed them in a special way (platinum/paladium mix?) to make them last forever. They're kind of B&W, but glow a bit more even on the printed page. Lovely. And the trees are incredible as is the way she captured them.Unfortunately, she made the decision to put just a plate on each page, then put a separate section in the back with thumbnails & a very brief explanation for each. At least she got the Latin names & locations for them. She could have easily put the explanation on most pages & on a facing page otherwise & I wish she had. Flipping back & forth sucked. The paucity of information was just plain frustrating. Luckily, I do have good references. As a coffee table book for someone who really appreciates photography & trees, this is a darn good book. I'm such a person as is my wife.

Hard-to-believe 8-inch x 10-inch black and white photographs of unusual trees from around the world. This is a great coffee-table book which displays the wonders of nature. And the Amazon price of $35 is also hard to believe.The book is nicely balanced with an introduction by the author, an article on the form and function of ancient trees by Todd Forrest, 62 tree pictures followed by 15 pages of captions, closing comments on the art of the tree by Steven Brown, and a 2-page index of the trees shown.I highly recommend this book for those interested in unusual trees and nature in general.

I anxiously awaited the arrival of this book for 6 weeks and when it finally came I was so disappointed with it that I was sure I must've gotten a knock-off copy. Many of the images were very grainy, there were some digital artifacts and that particular clipping of tones in the shadows I associate with ink jet printing. I immediately made some high res scans of the worst examples and emailed the publisher and the artist to verify it. The publisher explained that they worked closely with the artist and that the scans I made were indeed of their work and not a knock-off and that the artist supplied the proofs and files for the printing. So, the publisher is not to blame for what I perceive as a poor job and it was apparently what the artist intended. I can't understand why one would go to all the trouble of making platinum/palladium prints, known for their tonal range and high Dmax, and then compromise it so much IMHO. The artist never did reply to me. Ah well, you be the judge; none of the other reviewers have mentioned it. Perhaps I was expecting Ansel Adams like impact from these images, for they are well composed and lighted, and the book itself is well made with nice thick pages.

Interesting subject, minimal heart. Short on breadth of content. Fascinating nature, but so disappointing in that there is virtually nothing about the project, personal experiences of the photographer. Platinum/paladium printing is an interesting device, but I did not find its use here to be a valid process. I bought a used copy and will be selling it back immediately. No real life to the lives of the trees.

This book was everything i expected and more!! I researched this before purchasing and then i finally did it one day! I bought my 2nd "coffee table book"! It is beautiful. Nice and weighted. It has turned some heads and a few visitors have actually taken the time to flip thru the pages and become mesmorized by the sheer beauty of these natural trees! It is just so beautifully made i can't stop looking at it!

I don't think the print quality did the pictures justice. I returned the book.

This was a required book for a Human Rights class I was taking. I hadn't studied Human rights before, so I found it useful, but a little boring and repetitive. Human rights seem like they should be common sense, but they get more complicated as you travel around the world, and deal with so many different cultures.

The four stars in this review are more for the organization and clarity of Donnelly's ideas and to a lesser extent for the ideas themselves. It works well as an introduction to the validity of human rights, the vocabulary of practitioners and some of the founding documents, particularly, in this case, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations in 1948. The Holocaust, plus the forced relocation of millions and the destruction of the most basic necessities to maintain life during World War II was the impetus for the Declaration (grammatically the upper case D is correct but if Donnelly were reading it aloud you could hear it) and the subsequent treaties that amended and extended it.An important aspect of the UDHR is that all the rights it enumerates and defines are individual and not group rights. The rights of ethnic, religious or linguistic minorities are dealt with as the rights of individuals belonging to the group, not the group itself as a collective entity, since human rights are literally the rights that one has simply because on is a human being. Human rights are equal rights; all people have the same human rights as everyone else. They are inalienable; one cannot stop being human no matter how badly one behaves or how monstrously one is treated. And they are universal in that we consider all members of the species Homo Sapiens as human beings and thus, automatically, holders of human rights.Human rights can be violated, ignored or abrogated and often are with impunity for the violators. Attempting to claim a right--the right of free assembly and association, for example, can lead, in many countries to extra-judicial execution--one can simply disappear or, now that it has become a transitive verb, can be disappeared--El Salvador, Chile under Pinochet, Iraq, the Philippines, the USSR, many others. Regimes that feature summary executions of suspected enemies of the state will almost always fail in most other categories of maintaining or expanding human rights. However, no matter how the concept of individual rights is trampled under the jackboots of fascism those rights still exist and individuals in these unfortunate countries are still fully entitled to them. The right to the presumption of innocence in a free and fair hearing before an independent and impartial judiciary doesn't evaporate in, for example, the People's Republic of China even though those rights may seem to be in permanent abeyance.An important distinction for Donnelly is that human rights are not moral rights--human rights have played what he calls a "vanishingly small part of Western moral theory." He follows John Rawls in identifying them as political rights and is much more specific regarding them than Jurgen Habermas whose political philosophy often complements Rawls but who is in conflict with him as well.Donnelly knows his stuff. He is cited everywhere by everyone, has been consulted by the United Nations and governments throughout the world. “Universal Human Rights in Theory and Practice" is a valuable and timely book.

Used it as a textbook, but it was written in a way that tackles many of the basic questions that students may have about human rights as well as discussing the substantive schema within which human rights regimes operate.

I decided to try this book for an introductory course I'm teaching about human rights. This turned out to be a mistake. Donnelly presents the case for his own 'constructivist' account of human rights but doesn't do enough to give a fair account of alternative theories. As a result, this book isn't great as an introduction to the field. It might, I guess, be of interest to those who are already familiar with the human rights literature and so don't need to be exposed to a broader range of theories. Even so, because Donnelly doesn't engage sufficiently with opposing theoretical accounts (there are plenty from which to choose), his own conclusions are likely to strike those familiar with what else is on offer as too quick, and not particularly compelling.
