I was very disappointed in this guide book. I wish I had looked at the Table of Contents before I bought it because to my utter amazement, when the book arrived, I found that major areas of Italy (most of the ones I was planning to visit, namely Sicily, Puglia, and Basilicata) were not covered in the book at all! This was particularly surprising because these areas all have much to recommend them and contain several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, among other attractions.

Perhaps it's my fault for not checking the table of contents (much less the reviews) but hey, it's Rick Steves, right? The smiling, amiable chap you know from a lot of YouTube videos? He wouldn't stiff you, right?Oh no, you WILL be stiffed in my view, unless you're on the "Package Tour Of Cliched Sites" visit and even then I have some questions about the value. The blurb offers COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE for planning a MULTI-WEEK TRIP. The author’s emphasis, not mine. It claims to include “everything worth seeing without weighing you down”.Right. So apparently Sicily isn’t worth seeing, nor is Puglia (mentioned once, in passing), nor is Basilicata (zero mentions). Matera (the 2019 European capital of culture) isn’t worth seeing in Rick-world since it’s omitted as well, nor is Sardinia (the name is mentioned 8 times but in a historical context, not as a destination), nor is Molise, Le Marche, but hey, Abruzzo gets one mention! Oh, wait, it’s only mentioned as the birthplace of one of the researchers.In fact, let’s scratch the entire east coast of Italy except for Venice because hey, you’ve heard of Venice, right? No, wait, to be fair you will find a mention of the Dolomites as well.After I bought the book, I settled back to read all the advice about one of my major destinations, Piedmont. Home of Turin, birthplace of the modern Italian republic. Home to Le Langhe, a rich agricultural region every bit as beautiful as Tuscany, even if it doesn’t have its own Diane Lane movie.Wait, what, where is it? I love being able to hit the Search feature in a Kindle book. Piedmont gets... three mentions. Three. One single paragraph about the types of wines grown there, one about a café that includes dishes from there on the menu, one about the historical House of Savoy’s other name. Turin is mentioned 5 times, mostly in terms of how to get to other, more Rick-able places in Italy and once in the context of the 1960's movie The Italian Job. So my dreams of finding a great agriturismo in Le Langhe (zero mentions) took a power dive.But hey, if you want to know about Varenna in the Italian Lakes district, this book is almost an encyclopaedia on it. (Which is great, or would be had the title of the book been "Rick Steves' Favourite Places In Italy 2019", which it isn't.) Conversely we are advised that we should visit Villa Balbianello near there. Why is never explained; the reader is left to research that for themselves. However we're given the departure times for some trains out of Milan. I can't help feeling that those may be subject to change (and therefore less relevant to include in the book) as opposed to, say, why you might want to visit a particular place. What might attract you there. What you might see there.I just noticed another review titled "Should be titled MOST of Italy". While I agree with the contents of the review, I disagree about that title. MOST of Italy is what this book leaves out. What it is is "The Bits Of Italy You May Have Heard Of In Hollywood Movies, Specifically Rome, Tuscany, Milan, Venice, Naples And Sorrento 2019".I try to find the good in products and am a pretty easy marker in terms of rating them, but I'm hitting this with 1 star simply because in my opinion the title is COMPLETELY misrepresentative and misleading about what this book actually is. If you want a self-proclaimed "COMPREHENSIVE" coverage of Italy, this is not the book to go to. With over half the country not even getting a mention, it's not even close. And for mine, that is just not on.

This book was difficult to follow. Sections didn’t include a map key to show were they are located in the country. Sicily and Sardinia aren’t even mentioned in the book. Very few color pictures. I was really disappointed.

I love his approach to travel. He addresses things that most Americans worry about or want to know and need to understand. Even directions in specific airports and which terminal usually has the trains to which destinations. So helpful. It’s helped ease my jitters for our first overseas adventure.

These are my favorite travel guides. We travel internationally on a regular basis and always buy these guides. We enjoy the accompanying info available on the app that coordinates with the book. Highly recommend.

Rick helps you plan your time wisely. I particularly have enjoyed the private guides he has recommended. His hotel reviews are spot-on - but be warned - they are popular!

I used the 2018 edition of this book to plan for my Italian holiday this past Sep. I liked it so much that purchased the 2019 edition for my niece who is going to Italy this summer. She can’t use my book because each day I tore out the pages for the sites we were visiting and took only those pages with me. Much easier than carrying the entire book!

I gave 4 stars because on Amazon they show some nice colored pictures, and I believed this book will be very easy to read and find all info, but is not like that! Just first 30 pages from beginning of this book are colored and easy to read, the rest of over 1200 pages are like newspaper print. I have no problem reading like a normal book, but the description must be real and fair.Rick Steven's great on details and tips for trip, hotels and restaurants.Have a safe and wonderful Italy trip!

I bike about 50 miles per week (except in winter), in and around the Portsmouth area, and I THOUGHT I knew the best biking routes around here. Actually, I was clueless. Not only did I read this book, I drove some of the routes to check difficulty level, traffic patterns and quality of the road surface. My reaction to many of them was 'wow, this is great'. I am very glad I bought this.There are 28 routes in all, varying in length, covering almost all of the Seacoast towns and bordering Maine towns. I bike for exercise, not scenery, and look for routes with smooth roads and with the least amount of traffic and red lights (this is why I had to drive the routes, as this info is mostly not in the book nor would I expect it to be). I found several excellent routes for my personal needs. However, I look forward to trying some of the longer excursions (50-65 miles) and other rides I've never taken.If you are a visitor or summer resident and are into biking, GET THIS BOOK: clear maps, directions by odometer reading, and brief descriptions of each ride, most of them through picture-postcard scenery of the Seacoast. You'll be glad you bought it.

Lleva anécdotas y ejemplos entendibles para cada lenguaje y cada aplicación ó "dialecto" del lenguaje. Lo recomiendo para todo el mundo y ya regalamos 2 a unas parejas.

The booklet had way too many pages and there was no way to see how it was set up on line - so I ordered it. Not happy - just pulled out the pages I want and using rest for scratch paper. You need to show inside of booklet - on line - and I would of bought something else - as its not what I wanted.

It’s nice and spacious I write a lot and it’s big love it!Wish it wasn’t paperback and hardcover instead!

What I liked most of this Planner is the convenience and ease to take it with me on trips. Already have my 2019 trips marked off in the book.

So glad to have.. Came in handy!

I read this book briefly in the past. But recently, I have thoroughly re-studied this book in about two months time. The book is an old grandma book in the computer age. But interestingly, the ideas and design principles are still very applicable when working on complex concurrent systems. The patterns described in the book such as Active Object/Proactor/Async Completion Token/Interceptor/Half Sync & Half Async are used extensively in my daily work. By reading the book, I have a new level of understanding on these patterns.That being said, the author has been very wordy when explaining a simple idea and some of the examples are bit confusing. To fully grasp the ideas of the patterns, readers need patience and might have to review it a few times. More importantly, the examples used to illustrate patterns are tightly tied to a particular OS feature and make the pattern less meaningful in a broad sense. In fact, many patterns described in the book can be applied to a wider and more general context. For example, Acceptor/Connector can be applied to telephony application e.g. SIP or P2P communications systems to model the initiator and receiver. The Proactor/Async Completion Token can be applied to build electronic trading system where orders are filled asynchronously, also async operation processor within the Proactor can be implemented in the application level. In addition, the downloadable papers from author's web site explain acceptor/connector and leader/follower patterns (e.g. Bound variant etc) better than the book though the book explains other patterns well.Comparing with GOF book, this book has illustrated some of the architectural level patterns which minimize locking and increase the efficiency for concurrent system. Surprisingly, this book receives much less reviews comparing to GOF design pattern books which is more related to micro level design strategies. I believe that this book is heavily under-rated.After finishing the book, I like the book very much and bought a used one for a much cheaper price than the original $90 so I can have all patterns in one collection. Overall, it is a great book and highly recommended.

This is an amazing book. A little dry, but amazing. It will definitely change your way of approaching problems. It is highly recommended that you read the GoF pattern book in parallel with this book.

With so many patterns books out there written by little pikers who've probably never worked on a codebase of more than a thousand lines, this is a gust of fresh air. The first volume in this series is one of the great patterns books. The only knock I could offer on this book is that it is slanted a little toward the net equivalent of a kernel mechanic: in this day and age of the container as king, not many of us are doing thread locking on sockets (thank you Sun!). That said, these are intelligent examinations of patterns that are very realistic. I just reread the section on asynchronous notification mechanisms and the trade-offs between implementing a 'double observer' and other variations and was struck by the degree to which the material had been thought through and all the logical dependencies intelligently communicated. If you want to see what patterns look like when they are in the hands of seriously bright people, not some book junk of the month JC dropout, tune in here.

This book summarizes some important distributed systems patterns researchers have identified in recent years. In that sense it is a necessary contribution to the software engineering literature.However, the examples are at times unclear and the author does not always motivate them convincingly. From a technical writing perspective, the passive voice plagues this book from start to end, forcing readers to stop and reread sections to make sense of convoluted prose.

He is going for his PhD in Computer Science and currently doing research with mobile applications. Apparently this book is helping him a lot.
