This is a book to keep on your nightstand, to revisit time and again. When all of the conflicting parenting advice, trends, and anxiety begin to build up (as they inevitably do), this book brings you back to the basics. With simple wisdom and a straightforward writing style, Dr. Bertin reminds us that the bedrock of healthy child development isn't terribly complicated. It's a relief to be reminded of the importance of allowing kids to be kids, and not expecting them to behave like mini adults. The author excels at explaining the role of executive function in a child's maturation process, and why it's crucial for parents to set appropriate limits. He also gives valuable tips for parents to remain as present and mindful as possible amid the competing demands of daily life. Highly recommended.

Good

The first class I ever failed was Chemistry, at age 15. I ended the semester with a generously given 13/100. It wasn't until a few years later, when my mother was talking to me about brain development (family of nerds for the win) that I understood why: biologically, my brain simply wasn't ready to understand things like chemistry and calculus at fifteen years old. This book isn't asking you to be supermom, and there isn't really any mention of 'good' or 'bad' parenting, just observations on how parenting in general has changed and an exploration into whether it needed to. There's an emphasis on age and developmentally appropriate activities and routines, from how to get your little one to do their own homework to how to help teens develop good judgement.Definitely recommended.

This book provides a scientific basis for parents to "stay the course" with their children as they learn how to manage their lives. I never really thought about parenting from the perspective of developing executive function so this was a new lens for me to see myself and my child. If you're inclined to the scientific and want a fresh perspective this book can can really help.

If Cobain’s life was a movie, Journals is the director’s cut, the musings and contemplations of a mad genius. If you want to know who Kurt Cobain was, this is a necessary piece of the complex puzzle to ingest. Yes it is an intrusion into the guarded secrets of this complicated man's mind. But guess what - he's not here to protest. Is it disrespectful to read a dead person's diary? It is if you're looking for something lurid [which is not in these Journals]. I do recommend doing some research first so that the undated entries make more sense. Listen to Nirvana's music and the pre-Nirvana music. There's a lot of early Kurt in here, the literally starving penniless musician. This is where the successful Nirvana came from. Look at performance videos, watch interviews. If you still find Nirvana interesting, still find Kurt Cobain worthy, then buy these Journals. He is smart, angry, funny, articulate, with a rare ability to stand outside himself and see himself clearly. He doesn't always like what he sees, both in himself and in the world, the music industry in particular. Oftentimes I will know a particular story as told by a band member or friend, then read his version in his Journals, and break up my insides with laughter. He really does crack me up, makes me smile so many times. Especially after reading the Journals, I wish I had known him, could have hung out with him, called him Friend. He is worth the effort.

I did not even thought there is something like this personal diary/journal by Kurt Cobain until I happened to be skimming through the craigslist for sale ads and saw someone selling a used notebook. I thought to myself why would some crazy person selling a used written over college notebook and expect someone to buy it? Until I read the ad closely about Kurt Cobain diary, that's when I looked it up here in amazon. The craigslist seller lives too far to be worth the travel and purchase it. In the 1990s I liked Nirvana's music just a tad more than let say Guns N Roses but I didn't felt a high respect for Cobain, probably just the prejudice and what the media portrayed him. But I figured who am I to judge, I'm nobody, he's famous and made millions so I tried to learn more about his life, and visited his former home here in Seattle where I also live. This journal made him and his life and his band Nirvana more interesting than ever. Cobain is smart and funny. Some of these letters he wrote and drawings he drew just made me smile. This is definitely a great collection for Nirvana fans.

"Oh yeah and our final name is NIRVANA"I know there are some who feel like reading this is somehow violating Kurt, and I know that "rape" quote has been floating around in some reviews. However, with respect to that, Kurt was referring to not only his journals, but a slew of other items that were stolen from him and the band. Also, Kurt said a lot of things that were contradictory. He at one time made a comment saying he would like to maybe someday publish his old journals. He said being so famous so fast was conflicting, then he would say it's not so bad. Literally, on the first page of this book is a note from Kurt to someone (maybe his first girlfriend that he lived with?) that says "Don't read my diary when I'm gone. Ok I'm going to work now, when you wake up this morning please read my diary. Look through my things, figure me out." And was written at the same time, its obviously not 2 separate entries. That's who Kurt was. Yes, we still can't necessarily say that Kurt would want people reading these, but I still didn't feel all too guilty reading these. I sat with this book for a while, so I can digest the beautiful, scrawled words one of my all time heroes. You will know Kurt better than you ever thought. Sometimes, it can be tricky determining what time period some of the entries and notes were in, because Kurt didn't date his entries. However, there isn't really meant to be a narrative here, is there? These were Kurt's private thoughts. There are entries from the late 80s, with Kurt lamenting about his miserable experience at school and his salvation at the hands of punk rock. Even at a younger age, Kurt was so self aware and intuitive and an excellent people-reader. We also get an insight into his extreme anger at others. There are many fairly violent fantasies he conjures up. He was a very talented artist, and many of his drawings are included. We see the early days and Kurt's ambition and determination to get Nirvana jumpstarted. Also included are drafts of song lyrics. I got the chills reading the still unfinished lyrics to songs like Lithium and All Apologies and Teen Spirit and Drain You and'Aneurysm', and 'Dumb'--especially reading Kurt's scrawl of "I'm not like them, but I can pretend". Then, later on, we see Kurt's frustration with music journalists (put very succinctly by Kurt), and brainstorming of video ideas, including Heart Shaped Box, in which Kurt's notes pretty much exactly map out how the video would turn out. "In Utero"s original title was "I Hate Myself and I Want to Die", and Kurt writes quite a bit about it. I'd have liked to have seen what made Kurt ultimately change the title, unless it's documented somewhere else, but no big deal. Kurt was so eloquent in so many ways, and his journals confirm that from a young age he stood up against unjust oppression of any kind, especially against women and homosexuals. He was a sensitive, intelligent man.I know some have criticized the book, because Courtney sold them, so Courtney "controlled" the story, so to speak. And many have it in their head that Courtney probably withheld some entries that maybe were less than flattering about her. Kurt wrote about everything in his life, so it would stand to reason that there would be plenty about Courtney and Frances, yet there really isn't much. However, I don't really find this suspicious. There are a few mentions of Courtney. But Think about it, would you want your husband's or wife's most intimate thoughts and most intimate frustrations about your marriage published? It's no one's business. I don't exactly understand why people they have a right to read that. It's her prerogative to release that or not. People are just immediately suspicious of anything she does, or doesnt do. Even if he wrote some negative things about her, why would she want that out there? Nobody would. No one wants to look bad. I think there are so many (myself included) that hold Kurt pretty sacred. And, most Kurt fans have animosity toward Courtney, and they want to see something, in writing, concrete, from Kurt that is derogatory or negative about Courtney. That way, it would validate their own hatred for her. There is, however, a love letter to Courtney included in here that is probably the most beautiful letter I've ever read, and written in a way that only Kurt could write. There is also a heartbreaking, I'm assuming unsent, letter that Kurt wrote to his dad. Kurt documenting his descent into addiction is also heartbreaking and a must read for anyone thinking of taking drugs. Since the entries are undated, don't expect to find out exactly what Kurt wrote in the days before he died. There is simply no way to know. It's amazing that Kurt saw himself as a worthless, emaciated, uneducated loser yet he's one of the best lyricists our generation, any generation, was blessed with. He was wise beyond his years, and even his journals entries are some of the best stuff I've ever readALso, it's literally the scanned pictures of Kurt's journals. There is no typed transcription. Which makes it even better--the picture quality is so incredible that it looks like you are reading the actual journals of Kurt's. You can see the pen marks jump off the page. It looked so realistic that if one didn't know better, you would be able to erase the pencil writings yourself. And it's better this way, the dynamic of the book would be completely different and not as compelling if it was just transcribed.Bottom line, Kurt is one of my heroes. If he is one of yours, too, then buy this. You won't regret it. You will have a much more well rounded perspective of Kurt. Yes, not everything that went on in his life is spelled out, but you will still gain a huge insight. It made my heart ache, and realize just how big of a loss it was when he died. I know that I wouldn't be quite the person I am today if I hadn't gotten the cassette of nevermind when I was 8. Rock music died with Kurt Cobain unfortunately. And I get pissed and angry that he committed suicide. We know he adored Frances with all his heart, and you would think she would be enough to keep him going. Kurt himself talked at length about his parents' divorce and the horrible effect it had on him, how he so desperately wanted the 2 parent household. He of all people should have known better, what he was doing to his daughter. He wrote "her (frances') life will be so much better without me" in his suicide note. Come on, kurt. How could that be true? But, I guess that's the difference between people who aren't suicidal and those who are too far gone.

Awesome book! An interesting read. I read this book in only 3 days! Features Kurt Cobain's drawings, poems, previously unreleased song lyrics, drafts, letters he wrote, plans for music videos, diagrams and much more! Any Nirvana fan or fan of Kurt Cobain will enjoy this book. This book is is a representation of a great artist, a legend, a visionary, and a singer/songwriter/composer who earned his place in the history of music. Welcome to the artistry of Kurt Cobain and his creative process. A perfect collection of works from one of the greatest musicians of all time. 5 stars.

My daughter loved this as a way to gain a deeper insight into Kurt Cobain's thinking and creative process. We appreciate the idea of making it look like a spiral bound notebook, and the reproductions of his actual journal pages were fun to look at. My daughter will tell you that this is the book to buy if you want to know what Cobain was really like. I was very pleased with the quality for the low price. I highly recommend if you are a Cobain/Nirvana fan or if you have an angsty teen who loves to create music and is looking for her muse.

Love reading this book, comes in one book, with two journals, does have some drug use story and references and other risky material, so if your buying for a younger person I would definitely go over it and make sure it's ok for them. It gives an insight on Kurts musical, personal, and artistic life. If your looking to find anything about his murder/suicide there's not much to find. Great read, can be a little hard to read as it is written in his handwriting.

Review

"With verve and velocity, the story moves...one cinematic set piece after another, strung together with twisty fun and wit." - The New York Times Book Review "Cracked.com executive editor Wong (This Book Is Full of Spiders) unabashedly trolls everyone and lampoons everything in this beautifully outrageous science fiction adventure...Biting humor and blatant digs at modern society overlay a subtly brilliant and thoughtful plot focused on one young woman’s growth and survival against all odds." - Publishers Weekly, starred review"All right, grab some popcorn and strap in. We're in for another profane and funny roller-coaster ride from Wong...Some of the sci-fi elements are comic book–y and the humor is as juvenile as ever, but the book more than makes up for any shortcomings with its Technicolor tomorrowland, mischievous humor, and frenetic action sequences." - Kirkus Reviews "Well-timed humor and explosive thrills, a smart backbone, and witty wordsmithing make this new release by Cracked.com’s pseudonym-wielding Jason Pargin (John Dies at the End, 2009) as fun as it gets. Steer this one toward readers of sf with a sense of humor, and fans of Max Barry’s satirical futuristic novels." - Booklist, starred review"Wong has proven himself a master of both the hilarious and the horrifying, and this newest work aims his brilliantly cynical comedy style at a possible future for our society...Wong is a keen observer of the human condition, and is able to translate that into an apt, and often snarky, prediction for society’s trajectory...Like Jonathan Swift for the internet age, Wong’s novel offers an engrossing journey and razor-sharp wit inside of an uncanny prediction of an American future. His humor ranges anywhere from blatantly poking fun at our world to more subtle aspects of life that one would not even think of until pointed out. Wong’s capability as an author has steadily matured since he won cult status with John Dies at the End in 2007, and his newest is only more proof that he will be remembered as one of today’s great satirists." - Nerdist"With plenty of unexpected twists and turns along the way, you'll almost be sure that you forgot to plug your blink feed in, as we face even more perils than Zoey Ashe could have dreamt of, and that's just the holographic Christmas decorations. A sofa clutching read from beginning to end, and a great look at the constantly growing world of social networking." - Starbust, 9 out of 10 stars“David Wong’s writing style is a great mix of Tom Robbins meets Philip K. Dick. You could throw in some Christopher Moore as well. Wong’s sense of comedic timing is honed to perfection from his time spent as Executive Editor at Cracked.com. He has his finger on the pulse of popular culture, current trends, and how quickly both can become absurd and take civilization to places that it should not go...Fast, fun, brutal, hilarious, and quite thought provoking, Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits is highly entertaining and well worth every page turn. Whether a reader is familiar with Wong’s work or not, this novel is indicative of the writer’s talent for mixing wit and violence." - New York Journal of Books

This book is amazing. It is like binge watching Futurama while playing a hyper real video game full of violence and insanity. If that doesn't sound like your thing, I am sorry I can not fully explain the brilliant madness that is Wong's Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits. I became obsessed with his writing while reading John Dies at the End (also fantastic) and the writing in his second novel still haunts me to this day (in a good way.) If you want a unique reading experience that will leave you so fulfilled and wishing there was so so much more, this is exactly what you should be buying. Do it now. Don't wait. Stop. Don't click away. You must read this. Your life probably depends on it.

Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits by David Wong is an insane, hilarious, fun ride. I'm not new to David Wong's sense of humor or knack for the strange storytelling, but this book caught me by surprise. I've come to know that Wong's humor is abrupt, childish, and satisfying (particularly when he sets a joke up in an early chapter, just to get to the punchline near the end of the story). I loved this book and here's why.Likes:I have to start off by saying I really liked Will Blackwater. Not only is he a "dead-eyed robot" with a proclivity for intense bulls***ting, but he's smart, quick, clever, and an alcoholic with a love for suits. He's a ridiculous character, right down to his name, which is joked about in the book itself.I also really liked Zoey Ashe. She was somehow relatable without actually being relatable to me personally AT ALL. She's an abuse survivor who wants nothing to do with her dead-beat father, has unconditional love for her kinda-effed-up mother, and her closest relationship is with her cat, who she named Stench Machine. The other characters (the Suits: Echo, Budd, and Andre; Molech and his crew; the League of Badasses; etc.) are really interesting and fun characters also. I know there is no romance in the book, but I couldn't help picturing a Will/Zoey relationship, which made all their scenes together even better. Who cares if he's almost 20 years older than her? I pictured him younger. The storyline is a big high point for me, also. The blurb's I've read for this book are extremely vague. I can't believe such a good story stems from such a bad blurb. Honestly. Zoey lives in the middle of nowhere with a minimum wage job and no idea what she's doing tomorrow, let alone with the rest of her life. Unbeknownst to her, her no-show father has died and left all his "dirty" money (etc.) to her, making her a target to a bunch of bad people. I don't want to go into much more detail, but just know this was a wild ride, with a REAL plot; ignore the blurbs. The setting of Tabula Ra$a is awesome in my opinion. A made-up futuristic city where the richest and poorest of people converge among technology we can't imagine? Sign me up. The Blink network that broadcasts everything everywhere all at once? Don't sign me up, but I will gladly read about it. The technology and the setting were A+ in my book. It was a character in itself.I do happen to love the cover for this book, too, which kind of makes me feel like I'm a cover-lover.David Wong's style of writing and humor was the main reason I bought this book. I'm familiar with John Dies at the End and This Book Is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don't Touch It, and when I say "familiar," I mean that I love them. I practically grew up with JDATE, reading it back when it was only posted on the internet and not a tangible book to be purchased. There's something about Wong's style that makes me giddy and excited to read, happy to follow along these dysfunctional characters while they go on these ridiculous adventures.I like that in the acknowledgements, which are very short and humorous and worth the read, that Wong mentions he's working on the third JDATE story and may come back to revisit Zoey and the Suits.Dislikes:I dislike that I can't read the sequel right now. I also dislike the fact that there may never be a sequel, or that it may only come years from now. I'm eager to dive back in with these characters.Recommend it?Whole-heartedly. I am a huge David Wong fan and I would recommend all three of his books to anyone who likes strange, funny stories with anti-heroes you grow to love.

I'm a big fan of the "John Dies at the End" universe from David Wong. I read JDATE waaay back when I was an Internet Baby and it was posted in sections on the Pointless Waste of Time website (which was wall-to-wall pornography advertisements last time I visited). I love Wong's writing style, sense of ridiculous comedy, and raunchy, savage descriptions of the (absolutely necessary) gore. I was also happy to read an interview from him recently where he credited both Stephen King and Douglas Adams as inspirational to him. Way cool!Disclaimer: Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits is a completely different universe than JDATE.In FVFS, Wong creates an extremely realistic near-future, and his unpretentious, casual observational descriptions makes all the situations instantly relatable, although many of the features of the city of Tabula Rasa and its populace are uncomfortably bizarre. There's desperation and opulence, destruction and triumph, evisceration and comedy. This world is successfully crafted to be immersive and repulsive at the same time... just like real life! The story features a reluctant hero (Zoey Ashe), who is assisted in trying to save the city of Tabula Rasa (a high-tech pop-up metropolis along the lines of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates) by her late father's team of "Suits", whose competence and motives are questionable at every turn. There's plenty of sci-fi violence, a deranged supervillain, some romance maybe?, and everything is punctuated with Wong's extremely improbable, near-nonsense humor. More than once I had to put my Kindle down so I could wipe the tears of laughter out of my eyes, mostly thanks to Wong's brutally honest (and crude) descriptions of Zoey's reactions to the adventure she had been thrown into.Without giving too much away: You'll have no trouble dropping into this "fictional" world and watching this fast-paced misadventure unfold. Once you think you have it figured out, something really weird flies in from left field to slap you right in the face, and you wonder how you didn't see it coming?? It's a wonderful balance of structure and fantasy.Keep 'em coming, David Wong! (Or don't. Do whatever you want, man.)

Every book Wong writes, he gets better and better. His first book was an amazing breath of fresh air, but was rather scattershot. This improved on his second ... But here, it really all comes together. The story of Zoey and the battle of her inheritance becomes a crazy fight between gangs of sociopaths -- some wearing suits -- and it is pitch perfect. The pacing is flawless, always giving you a moment to catch your breath when you need it, right before he floors it and ratchets up the tension. And Wong's perverse sense of humor is intact; the jokes are never delivered as punchlines, but just dropped in here and there, where a moment of levity is appropriate and needed. Wong is fastly threatening to become my favorite author. He defies simply genre defining, but don't let that scare you off. You owe it to yourself to check him out.

I'm going to sum up this book as succinctly as possible:I'm a professional bartender that has remodeled his kitchen to be as much a chemistry lab as it is a place of cooking. I have a HUGE library dedicated to bartending books... in addition to cooking, gastro, flavor-profiling, pairing, etc. I love the food and beverage industry, and I believe that a bartender is as responsible for creating an enjoyable meal as a chef. My personality is front-of-house while my mentality and drive (and sometimes my personality, too) is back-of-house.This book is perfect for people like me that are always on the look-out for ways to bring new techniques to their libations, not to mention a thorough explanation for why things work they way they do... which is wonderful for inspiration. However, this book is also perfect for someone that simply wants to know how to make the magic happen at home.1) Dave Arnold is a genius. Certifiably, not hyperbole. It takes a unique and gifted soul to bring this level of thoughtfulness to his trade, and a generous spirit to pass along just enough of that information to make someone incredibly dangerous if they're on a first-name basis with their welding shop (like me: former iron-worker). What he has to say about everything is worth paying attention to... especially the giant chapter on ice. It's funny to say it, but embracing 25 pages on solid water has made me a much better bartender than the hundred of other pages detailing elevated techniques.2) Outside of understanding how ice and dilution actually work to make or break a cocktail, there is very little in this book that pertains to bringing an extra bit of flair and wonder to your bar. Tossing bottles is for kids that work at TGI Fridays. Real flair is about making the creation of something that's liquid unforgettable look effortless. This book is all about preparation. The first part is education. The second part is experimentation. The third part is learning how to set everything up in advance so that the actual mixing, building and shaking is as smooth and consistent as possible.3) This book will force you to be a better bartender. I don't care if you're a professional or home-based booze-hound: this book will force you to elevate your knowledge and ability just from the kind of humble enthusiasm Arnold communicates for the bartending trade. Not only am I a better, more educated bartender capable of applying the various techniques and technologies discussed in Liquid Intelligence to the recipes bound within it, I've also gained the confidence to seek out my own individuality using these lessons.I have a ten-pound bottle of liquid nitrogen in my kitchen, now... and I'm sourcing a carbonator. And then there's the red-hot poker I know just enough about electrical engineering and fabrication to injure myself perfecting.4) This book has made such an impact on me that I've begun carrying my own tools to my job. I refuse to use pint glasses for shaking cocktails, I refuse to use their muddlers, I refuse to use their strainers. Just like when I worked on steel fifteen years ago, I pack in my own tools every day I go to work, and when I take over a new bar in three months, all of the bartenders that work for me will do the same.Chefs pack their knives.Carpenters pack their saws.Real bartenders pack their shakers, clarify their juices, and analyze every bottle with a Brix meter to make sure each cocktail they craft is consistently delicious.THAT'S how good Liquid Intelligence is.

Shortly after I finished reading my first alcohol book (The Drunken Botanist), I found myself desperately searching for something that could measure up to it and could teach me the things I needed to know.  Upon receiving many recommendations for Liquid Intelligence, I decided to purchase it for Kindle, since I couldn't wait for it to be shipped.  About halfway through I vowed never again to buy a cocktail book (or any reference book) without being able to hold it in my hands.  I did not abandon the book, but in electronic form it was of little use to me in my average references.  Recently while discussing books with a regular, she mentioned that she had purchased a cocktail book that proved to be wildly over her head and far more than she had ever needed... I immediately knew which one she was talking about and she was gracious enough to give me her copy.  I am a more fulfilled woman today, with this book in my hands. In every aspect of Liquid Intelligence, Dave Arnold's character is clear.  He is a scientist who puts on the garb of bartender.  He is a perfectionist in an artists game.  In my mind, there is a range of cocktail artists... on one end you have the artist, someone who pours until the cocktail is 'right', someone who makes a different cocktail every time.  On the other end of the spectrum is the scientist, people like Dave Arnold who practice that the 'right' cocktail is the perfectly balanced one, a blend that can be found through practice and repetition.  People like this create as much consistency as can every be had in the cocktail industry.  On both ends of the spectrum boundaries are pushed in ways the average person could never anticipate.Liquid Intelligence begins you with over 30 pages on measurements, units and equipment.  He then has 25 pages on Ice.  Part 3: New Techniques and Ideas involves things like nitro-muddling, pokers, iSi Whipper, and fat washing.  This is not a beginners cocktail book.  This is not a home-bar cocktail book.  This book is by a professional, for professionals.  While Dave Arnold's writing style is extremely accessible and he does not delve into too much scary molecular science, if read as a beginner or an average home enthusiast, one of two things will happen: 1. you will fall in love with it and but entirely too many things you don't need and constantly be asking for more than the average bar can supply or 2.  you will think cocktail making is some inaccessible science, bordering on wizardry and that you could never hope to be a part of it.  I fall into the first category and freely declare myself to be an impractical person when it comes to the things I want for my bar.  My friend falls into the second category and while I am glad that it led this book to me, I am also saddened by the fact that she felt she was unable to continue on a cocktail journey.  Her husband is a chef and she is a bookworm with a great deal of spirit... there is no reason she cannot explore complex cocktails at home and I have no alternative but to believe that it is this book that deterred her.I am not driven the way Dave Arnold is. His focus and consistency are not my style, but I still found this book incredibly interesting.  It also was extremely helpful for establishing 'Best Practices' in my opinion.  There are many people out there who will be happy to tell you that shaken is better or stirred is better but Dave Arnold took the time to break it down to what is actually happening in the glass.  For those things that we can do at our limited bars, it is best to do them as well as is possible.  Many of the small things I do throughout the day are with his advice in mind, such as icing a drink after all ingredients have been added or slapping mint instead of tearing it.  This book is also jam-packed with pictures for reference.  Arnold ensures that every explanation is as thorough as if you were sitting in a classroom.  He explains why he does everything, which is incredibly helpful for the bartender who is looking to bring a new elevation to their cocktails.Overall, I love this book.  I dream enthusiastically about the day I get to go to Booker & Dax and less enthusiastically about the morning afterwards.  If you are thoroughly entrenched in the alcohol business, either as a home enthusiast or as a bartender/mixologist I recommend it with passion.  If you are not thoroughly entrenched, if you are still hesitant when walking down the liquor isle or nervous when going on shift... maybe wait a while.  Read some other books first, talk to some other bartenders and do your own research.  This is an experience that is best done at the right time, not the closest time.

#3,104 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

“Recruit (Iron Legion Book 1)” wasn’t entirely bad. The author understood the mechanics of writing well enough to use correct grammar and spelling. The protagonist wasn’t unlikable. There was the bare bones of a plot present.Unfortunately, the plot wasn’t especially original. An unprepared young man gets conscripted and finds himself in the middle of an adventure in which only he is capable of saving the day. I have frankly read variations on this idea dozens of different times. The title of this book makes it clear that this is only the first book in a projected series. The dozens of similar books I have read suggest the broad outlines of this series will be predictable. I have become tired of military science fiction and especially tired of the Horatio Hornblower in space trope. Can’t somebody please write something different? The author of this science fiction book doesn’t seem to have an especially good grasp of basic science. For example, the characters are traveling between star systems aboard a very large spaceship. Suddenly, they pass very near a planet that is not near their destination and their ship comes under fire from rebels on a planet believed to be uninhabited. Let’s stop there for the moment. Does the author have no concept of the magnitude of interstellar distances? The odds of a ship traveling between two stars unexpectedly passing close to an inhabited planet are literally astronomical. The odds against it are so large as to render the entire scenario unbelievable. Further, a starship passing by such a planet would be traveling at very high speeds. It isn’t exactly clear whether this author is positing ships traveling at near-light-speed or at faster than light speeds. I will take a stab in the dark and guess the latter is the case. Even a ship traveling at near light speeds, however, would pass by a planet so quickly that the sort of drawn out space battle that takes place in the book would simply be impossible. And, wouldn’t people capable of building and piloting such ships be smart enough to navigate their ships away from planets? The battle scene doesn’t make sense for another reason. The ship is traveling between two points in space when suddenly they are fired upon from this nearby planet. Somehow, the ship comes to a dead stop relative to the planet. How did that happen? A basic principle of science is that an object traveling in a straight line tends to continue traveling in a straight line unless it is acted upon by an outside force. It doesn’t just come to a stop. Is there some unique kind of FTL drive at play here such that the ship comes to rest once the FTl drive stops? If so, we are never told that this is the case. It looks like the author just didn’t understand that this kind of thing violates a basic law of physics.Gravity is something else that the author doesn’t seem to understand. The author doesn’t go into detail about what kind of system the ship uses to simulate gravity but some facts are clear. First, the characters aren’t just floating around inside the ship so something must be holding them to the decks. Second, we don’t observe any signs of acceleration or deceleration. Third, we don’t observe anything to suggest that gravity is simulated by spinning the ship. Fourth, there are no descriptions of shoes with magnets, Velcro, or similar devices to hold the characters feet to the decks of the ship. All of this makes it look like there is some kind of artificial gravity system at work inside the ship. When the ship comes under enemy fire, it gets hit several times. Suddenly, orientation of gravity on the ship shifts so that up becomes down. The orientation of gravity changes again at least a few more times. The characters get bounced around and injured. The protagonist has to make a heroic effort to overcome the changing gravity in order to rescue himself and an injured friend from the ship before it crashes. So, what’s causing all of these gravity fluctuations? There is no explanation given at all. The author apparently concluded that it just made good drama. When the protagonist gets to the planet, he is knocked unconscious. Within minutes of waking up, he encounters characters who are more senior than him in the sense of both rank and tenure in their organization. Let’s be clear - this is a military organization. Somehow, these two senior characters don’t take command. Instead, they are willing to be guided by the protagonist and his friend despite the fact that neither the protagonist nor his friend have even finished their military training. This runs completely counter to the principle of a chain of command. A chain of command is present in every military. Why would the two junior characters end up running the show? There is no convincing explanation. The problems don’t end there but I see little point in providing further details. This book needs a major re-write in order to be acceptable. The only reason I gave this book two stars instead of one is because there aren’t major spelling and grammar errors.

I almost stopped reading this novel after the second chapter, but I’m glad I hung in there. James Maddox is a lab grown human (called a “tuber”) designed to work in a dead-end job manufacturing atmosphere on a dingy planet in the vast Federation. He gets drafted out of his mundane existence into the Federation Ground Forces where the three year survival rate is publicly known to be 7%. This number is a big problem for the credibility of the Iron Legion universe. First off, no one seems to think that the Federation is at war, so why would it be losing 93% of all of its soldiers? Secondly, there would be riots every time the military appeared to conscript people if that figure was really common knowledge. Third, it’s difficult to imagine that the Federation could maintain any kind of real fighting machine with that casualty rate—not just because morale would be nonexistent among the troops but because it takes a certain core of experienced soldiers to pass on the traditions and experience that permits an army to function. But that’s not the end of the basic—let’s call them “world building” problems.Maddox breaks the records in his simulation test and becomes the first tuber to be given a chance to join the Iron Legion—soldiers who pilot twenty-foot-tall mech warriors that were clearly inspired by Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers. Because he’s a tuber, everyone in the program—pilots, instructors, and commanding officers—want him to fail. He has to join an already in progress class made up of academy graduates and immediately get up to speed with them in their study and performance or get kicked out. Let me repeat that. He is expected in three days to catch up academically with a class of students who have studied in military academies all their lives well enough to pass the next exam they are taking. (Failure means eviction from the program.) Astoundingly, Maddox not only passes the test, he keeps passing them, yet this doesn’t affect the feelings of a single person in the military toward him. Again, think about what this means. Not only must Maddox be an Einstein level intelligence, he must also be the Michelangelo of the mech world to accomplish this, but his success makes no impression whatsoever on any of his instructors or superiors because he is a tuber. I suspect, that in reality, within hours of his record breaking sim performance, the military would have been moving to grow ten thousand new James Maddoxes that could be properly educated from birth in the hopes of turning them into super soldiers. So let’s pretend that that’s actually happening behind the scenes and get into what this novel is best at. Through several chapters that mostly depict hazing by Maddox’s classmates, authors Ryker and Morgan succeed in building interesting relationships between Maddox and three and a half other people in the program. These are not positive relationships as all of these people are antagonistic toward our hero, but they formed the basis of what I assumed would become a core group that Maddox would reluctantly win over by saving them repeatedly in combat. The groundwork for this actually is set in place during an extended sim exercise, but rather than build on this, the carrier the students are on is destroyed and Maddox is launched into the last phase of the novel. This final phase is filled with action-packed adventure as Maddox basically saves the day. We pick up two new (and interesting) cast members and rescue one of the old ones. We also find out for the first time that there is a 7% survival rate because the Federation has been at war for centuries with a group referred to as “the Free” who don’t like the dictatorial policies of the Federation. (I wager that by the end of the series, Maddox has switched sides and joined the Free.) The Federation doesn’t come off looking good here and Maddox and his new friends move heaven and earth to rescue a bunch of their fellow soldiers captured by the Free before the Federation counterstrike turns them into friendly-fire casualties. Maddox’s moral sense—his willingness to put himself on the line to save others—differentiates him from most of the people we’ve met in the book and I’d have liked to understand better where this attitude came from. It’s certainly respectable, but his background didn’t seem to teach him anything but looking out for himself.Overall, I enjoyed the book. It has some major weaknesses in its background, but those weaknesses didn’t really spoil the experience for me and I suspect elements like this will get better as the authors become more comfortable in their Iron Legion universe.

The universe in this novel, and everyone in it, is ugly and selfish and mean spirited. The decision to make the central conflict a morally ambiguous fight between gray hats on the one side and more gray hats on the other side leaves the narrative grounded in nothing but the protagonist's fight for survival. That present a likability problem for the reader - when our protagonist is the only person in the book with a conscience, and the setting itself has contempt for him!Three stars because the action and suspense are well crafted, but given that they are in service to nothing, it leaves the rest of the book feeling as satisfying as the worst of Michael Bay's films. If nothing matters, does it really matter if you read this book? Nope.

I enjoyed the book, it was a fast read and kept my interest throughout. I was left wanting more but maybe too much more. The end felt a little like the author was tired and just wanted to be finished. Never the less I already bought the next in the series and look forward to more of the story.

I really enjoyed this book and the mechs are pretty good but there isn't much to go on because the main character is just a recruit. Once the action picks up it doesn't stop but good action. The main character goes through some hell through this book and never really gets to rest because of the constant harassment, accidents, and war. Good first book to the series cannot wait to read the next.

A Great coming-of-age mil sci read. Not so much science that requires suspension of belief, and the characters are recognizable in today's military. The only negative is that the sequels are still in David Tyler's mind and computer notes. C'mon dude, we're waiting!!
