Review

If you like racing (almost any racing from the 1950s on), you will find this book endlessly fascinating. It's a compilation of race-car engineering insights from the great drivers who had to go out on the tracks to see if the cars worked. Almost everyone of note shows up in "Making it Faster," describing the innovations that were good, bad or horrible, all in their own words, as introduced by authors Dan Binks and Norm DeWitt. ... If you're a reader of Autoweek, you must like racing, so you'll love this book. --Autoweek Magazine, July 21st, 2014Norm DeWitt has created a transparent look at what goes on behind the scenes of competitive and contentious motorsports in our generation. He could not have chosen a more relevant and deserving porthole for this look see than one of the all-time great leaders and technicians in the sport of automobile racing than my good friend Danny Binks. A true Racer!--Jack RoushThis book is written with care and passion.  Care means with very careful research work and the care not to ask too much from the reader, may it be an engineer or a motorsport enthusiast.  The passion you can feel while reading every single page.  It takes you along on a fascinating journey through decades of racing and it makes it hard to stop reading before you have reached the end.-Dr. Ulrich Baretzky (Audi Sport). One of the most densely-packed, frenetically-paced books of technical tidbits, first-person stories, rumors, theories, scenes, secrets, scenarios, dreams, drama, and odd-ball racing vignettes ever. ... The dual authors of this hefty volume are just unrelenting in piling on layer after layer after layer of information about the people and the pieces of the world automobile (and motorcycle) racing. Technical history on the half-shell, this book jumps "on the cam" from page one and rides the rev-limiter until the very last page. --Car Culture Ground Zero, lacar.com Regular Classic Racer contributor, Norm DeWitt, has published another great book - Making it FASTER.  On the face of it, Making it FASTER looks to be one for the car race enthusiast, which is Norm's first love, but it has some great motorcycle technical stories scattered throughout.  In typical Norm style he has called on some of the greatest names in two- and four-wheeled sport to gather together an interesting and informative read.  Highly Recommended. --Classic Racer Magazine (UK) Nov/Dec '14

As someone who grew up watching Tommy Kendall on TV, the book is worth buying for that aspect alone. The stories that are told are amazing, some I've never heard before--and I consider myself a fairly hardcore motorsports fan. That being said, this book could have been five stars. This book needed a strong editor, and it appears it didn't have one. Better organization of material, smoother transitions, and better spelling and grammar could have made this one of the all-time great motorsports books. As it stands, it is a collection of cool stories, but not a very good book. It feels as if you are reading straight from a reporter's transcribed interview notes at many points.I really hope a second edition of the book comes out that does proper justice to the book's material. I would buy the second edition to go along with this one. Until then, as I said, the book is worth buying anyways, but it's a fight to get through, not the pleasure that it could be.

This book has so much real inside information it could be used as a primer for folks thinking of what it takes to be a racer. What I'm finding extra-fascinating is reading inside stories about how some of my racing heroes and their teams "made it happen". I have been a fan of motorsports since the mid-1960s and have watched the careers of most of the people featured in this book. Even growing up in the racing "desert" of NYC, I read and watched everything I could get my hands on but was only conversant with tidbits and results. This book fills in so many blank pages it's like having a DVR of historic events that you can rewind and fast forward.

This book took me a moment to fully understand. I didn't realize going in how much ground it was going to cover. It goes over multiple forms of motorsport, and breaks them down into different components, telling stories about different areas of technology improvements over the years. It jumps around A LOT between forms of motorsport. Once I got the concept that it was just a collection, rather than a continual narrative, I was able to sit back and really enjoy it. I tend to stick to 4 wheel racing and know nothing about motorcycle racing, but I still read the motorcycle sections because I got so wrapped up in them. This is not a book for the racing beginner, but for someone who has been watching racing for a few years and wants to go deeper, I would certainly recommend it.

I could not put this book down. Once I started reading it .....I was HAD! My wife said "What the heck are you reading? Go to sleep and turn of that damn light!!"This book filled in so many holes the history I know and also taught me so much about things I thought I already knew. As a Motorsports NUT this is a feast for your brain.Norm DeWitt dug up stuff that was so interesting and detailed. I learned a lot about all phases of motorsports. While I was reading this book, I went to the Long Beach International motorcycle show. My friend Mary McGee introduced me to Norm DeWitt! I was blown away......we talked for about and hour! This is a long book, but you just can't put it down! I think I will read it again just so I retain all the great nuggets that are in here.

If you want to get a gift for someone who wants to get the inside scoop on how racers prepped their cars, both in the good old days, and today, but them this book. Norm has interviewed lots of the insiders in our sport, and is sharing their stories with you, so you can see how its really done. He's had the privilege of being able to sit done with some of the greats, like Phil Hill, and the Andretti's. and Dan Gurney. This reads like a collection of short stories, which is good, because they all lead to one thing: making it faster. Buy it for that person who wants a good read and a great intro on the sport. Enjoy.

I'm a fan of the 1980's - 1990's TransAm series, Roush/ Protofab/ Bob Riley/ Dan Binks/ Tommy Kendall, and met Dan once on a tour of the Roush empire back in the mid 90's (hanging out with Chris Economaki, what a day!).From that perspective the stories involving such characters were interesting, the remainder of subjects and stories somewhat less so, but mainly because the writing is laborious. The book doesn't flow at all, bounces around, and I ultimately lost interest.BTW, there are no tips/ techniques on making a vehicle perform better ;)

This book is a great collection of stories about man's endless endeavor to be faster in a race car. The Indy Race Series and Formula 1 have stretched man's engineering ability to the limits in trying to find the elusive one more mile per hour. This book tells many stories of the men and the machines that set the records. It is written in an interesting style that will keep your attention. I highly recommend it.

You won't find this kind of stuff just anywhere. There is some genius-derived information that will explain a great deal of what you might have only sensed went on in the background of top-level racing, automotive and motorcyclitive (sic). I would have Loved this book if the author had bothered to hire a decent editor. Still an essential read. Cheers, Norm!

Excellent follow-up to "The Hedge Knight." The first trade was good; this one is outstanding. The art, pacing, dialogue and overall story are wonderful. It's wordy for a comic (meaning: if you are tired of trades that you can read in 30 minutes, this is for you). The story takes place about 80 years before the events of "Game of Thrones." It deals with the fall-out of a brief Targaryen civil war about a dozen years after it happened. The main character is Dunk, the Hedge Knight, and his squire, Egg. Both are good characters, but Egg is particularly interesting (based partly on who he is but especially on who he becomes). To enjoy this, you must read the first trade. If you like "Game of Thrones" and comics, you will love this.Final thought: what is the best way to prepare someone to rule one day? Think on it.

I'm a GOT/ASOIAF junkie, and had sought out the three "Dunk & Egg" stories in print after finishing "A Dance of Dragons." To be honest, it was "The Mystery Knight" (D&E #3) that got me to read "A Game of Thrones." I didn't even know it was a story in the same world until midway through, and by the end, I was hooked. The 3 (so far) "Dunk & Egg" tales take place a few generations before the events of A Game of Thrones- and they cover life in the fall out of the Targaryen schism known as the "Blackfyre" rebellion. Long story short, some Targ bastards got legitimized upon their King/Father's death, and an uprising for the Iron Throne happened. The Blackfyres lost, leaving the question of "Did you support the Black or the Red [Dragon]?" to be a dangerous political statement in its own right.15 years after that uprising, its affects are still felt across Westeros. The first 2 Dunk & Egg tales were made into graphic novels, and these editions are great. #1, the Hedge Knight introduces you Dunk & Egg and #2, the Sworn Sword, is a bit of standalone adventure. From what I understand, George RR Martin has plans for more of these, and they tend to be a bit more stand-alone in nature than his other writing. In short, if you like the politics and intricacy of Westeros, but long for something a little less grim (but no less bittersweet), READ THESE. Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) is what Sansa Stark would call a "true knight," and would make good pals with the likes of Ned Stark, Davos Seaworth, and Brienne of Tarth.

The graphic novel adaptation of the second of George R.R. Martin's Dunk & Egg novellas, not only stays true to the originally written story but gives it life with fantastic renderings of all the characters, the locales, and the action. Drawn by artist Mike S. Miller and livened by colorist Mike Crowell, "The Sworn Sword" gives both "Game of Thrones" book and show fans a great look into the history of the Seven Kingdoms as Ser Duncan (Dunk) the Tall and the future King Aegon (Egg) V learn about the greatest threat to the Targaryen throne nearly a century before Robert’s Rebellion—the Blackfyre Rebellion. The story begins almost two years after "The Hedge Knight", Dunk and Egg are in the service to Sir Eustace Osgrey who holds a small tower but reminisces about his family’s ancient glory and his own immediate family’s misfortune. A nearly two year drought has gripped Westeros after the Great Spring Sickness—think the Black Death—resulting in water and people being short, which is when Ser Eustace’s stream disappears. After Dunk and another sworn sword, Ser Bennis, search upstream they discover that Ser Eustace’s neighbor Lady Webber has built a dam to divert the water. Soon things escalate and the two nobles begin to lob threats and promise blood vengeance as Dunk tries to find a way to make peace.Of the work surrounding the graphic novel itself, I can only praise the work of Miller and Crowell who not only brought into visual life Dunk and Egg but so many other historically important characters in very consistent way throughout the entire book. It is hard to find fault with the work of these two men save with pointing out a few continuity errors, which unfortunately happen in every graphic novel. But when it came to the memories of Ser Eustace Osgrey about the Battle of the Redgrass Field that ended the threat of Daemon Blackfyre, the artwork is fantastic and brings the memories of the battle alive and giving justice to some of Martin’s best writing. If you're a fan of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" world and haven't gotten this book yet I, what are you waiting for? I highly recommend this graphic novel adaptation of "The Sworn Sword" as well as the novella itself, you won’t be disappointed.

A waste of money. I feel scammed. The text is so small I cannot read it even on my large monitor. Kindle app doesn't allow zoom feature. I would enjoy reading The Sworn Sword even as a comic book but it would have to be at least readable. I also do not appreciate how these books are marketed. There is no way to tell the order to read these unless you purchase an additional book. The Sworn Sword is the same as A Knight of the seven Kingdoms but in an unreadable comic book form. I'm not sure this is the author's doing or Amazon getting customers to purchase books they have already read. I started out enjoying the one-click buying feature, but now I have to be very careful or risk getting charged for audio I don't want or a comic book I can't read.

#3,269 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is such a great little book for busy moms who want to remember the details of the days when their children were little. The questions are cute and the space provided is adequate to provide short answers. I'm so glad I got this!

Confession: I bought this for a Christmas gift, but started thumbing through the pages and fell in love with the concept. I've started using it myself, and will have to purchase a second copy for the intended recipient! :)But I really do love this little book. I think many of us would agree that the ordinary details of today are going to end up being the sweet and special memories of tomorrow - if only we could remember them! And that's where this little gem comes in handy. I bought a similar book when my toddler was first born, but that book did not have any questions/prompts, just blank pages. I kept up with it at first, but eventually got to a point where I didn't know what to write. It can be hard to think of something original to write every single day. But with this book, the simple questions get me writing down memories I never would've thought to record, but know that one day I will love reading! Sample questions include, "One smell I associate with my child right now is _____, " "My child's newest friend is ______" and "What is getting easier these days?" Highly recommend, although if I could give 4.999 stars instead of 5, I probably would, only because I feel like the book would be even better if it was a little bigger. If you have more than one child and want to answer the questions for both of them, you will have to write pretty small.

Hi Parents! Not that we need one. more. thing. but I really enjoy this journal. It's just a few sentences (or less). I'm really hoping I keep it going! I usually scribble a quick note during the morning craziness amongst the toys on my counter, dodging spills near my wrists, with screams of "more cereal please" as my mood music. If I miss a few day, no big deal as the questions are easy. Sometimes I look ahead so I can think on my answer while I'm going abut my day. Motherhood is hard, but I like documenting it and really like that I'll have the same questions to answer for 5 years. There are standard questions ("What's your child's favorite toy?") to ones that make me pause for a moment ("What's a good theme song for your child right now?").

Great concept. I ordered two of the Q & A a day for teens for my daughters (12 & 14 years old) and was hoping we could all write in our own Q & A books together. However, the questions in this book are geared toward the years when your kids are much younger. I suppose I could adapt the questions to fit the teen years, but it just seems so...young. I will gift it to someone with a young child and look for a more suitable book for myself. Otherwise, great, hardcover book and lovely cover. Small in size, but nicely bound.

A good little journal keepsake to pass on. Questions are good. Nice hard cover, not flimsy. Even has a ribbon bookmark so you don't have to root for your page. Yes, there was a big sticker on the back but with a little effort you can get it off and not ruin the book. Only downfall is its tiny. Barely bigger than my hand.

I love this book.I've only been writing in it for about a month but it's been really great. It asks some deep questions about motherhood and life in general. I think when my children are grown it will service as sort of a memoir for my kids. It's geared towards one child but when I read the question if it triggers an answer concerning any of my kids I might answer it based on one of the four or all four. So you can adapt the book to a multi kid household.I love how when I started the book my kids are 7,7,4,&1 and when I finish it they'll be entire different people at 12,12,9,&6. My daughter is just now starting to talk, so who knows who she or even I will be by the time she is six!Pocket size, about like your hand or a book of prayers so it doesn't take up a ton of room on the nightstand.Great way to journal without really journaling.

I got this for myself to write about my 4 children and absolutely love it. It exceeded my expectations. I've been using their Question A Day 5 year journal for a few years now, and this one is right on par with that. Great questions for any parent, not just moms, and fun to include my kids answers sometimes. I'd get this as a gift for someone.

I love this book, and I will easily be giving it as gifts in the future to any moms I know! Like a lot of people, my new year's resolution is to practice mindfulness and to write/journal more. Staring at a blank journal is intimidating, so this book makes the task fun and something I look forward to everyday. It takes less than five minutes to complete and you'll thank yourself later for completing the prompts. It says it's a journal, but I think it's also somewhat of a baby book where you can document what your kid is doing at the time and what your thoughts are. I can't wait to complete the year and answer the prompts again...I'm hoping I'll see personal growth in myself and feel some nostalgia when I read about what my daughter was doing a year ago that day!

This is perfect for the busy moms who would like to keep a journal but they just can't find the time to keep one. This is a question-a-day with enough room for 2-3 sentence answers. Very thoughtful questions (ones I wouldn't even think of answering unless I had this prompt!). This covers 5 years and so much happens in 5 years. Start at any point and just keep rolling. Takes a few minutes a day. Small enough to keep on the kitchen counter or even in a pocketbook. It will be a true keepsake.
