Review

If you like racing (almost any racing from the 1950s on), you will find this book endlessly fascinating. It's a compilation of race-car engineering insights from the great drivers who had to go out on the tracks to see if the cars worked. Almost everyone of note shows up in "Making it Faster," describing the innovations that were good, bad or horrible, all in their own words, as introduced by authors Dan Binks and Norm DeWitt. ... If you're a reader of Autoweek, you must like racing, so you'll love this book. --Autoweek Magazine, July 21st, 2014Norm DeWitt has created a transparent look at what goes on behind the scenes of competitive and contentious motorsports in our generation. He could not have chosen a more relevant and deserving porthole for this look see than one of the all-time great leaders and technicians in the sport of automobile racing than my good friend Danny Binks. A true Racer!--Jack RoushThis book is written with care and passion.  Care means with very careful research work and the care not to ask too much from the reader, may it be an engineer or a motorsport enthusiast.  The passion you can feel while reading every single page.  It takes you along on a fascinating journey through decades of racing and it makes it hard to stop reading before you have reached the end.-Dr. Ulrich Baretzky (Audi Sport). One of the most densely-packed, frenetically-paced books of technical tidbits, first-person stories, rumors, theories, scenes, secrets, scenarios, dreams, drama, and odd-ball racing vignettes ever. ... The dual authors of this hefty volume are just unrelenting in piling on layer after layer after layer of information about the people and the pieces of the world automobile (and motorcycle) racing. Technical history on the half-shell, this book jumps "on the cam" from page one and rides the rev-limiter until the very last page. --Car Culture Ground Zero, lacar.com Regular Classic Racer contributor, Norm DeWitt, has published another great book - Making it FASTER.  On the face of it, Making it FASTER looks to be one for the car race enthusiast, which is Norm's first love, but it has some great motorcycle technical stories scattered throughout.  In typical Norm style he has called on some of the greatest names in two- and four-wheeled sport to gather together an interesting and informative read.  Highly Recommended. --Classic Racer Magazine (UK) Nov/Dec '14

As someone who grew up watching Tommy Kendall on TV, the book is worth buying for that aspect alone. The stories that are told are amazing, some I've never heard before--and I consider myself a fairly hardcore motorsports fan. That being said, this book could have been five stars. This book needed a strong editor, and it appears it didn't have one. Better organization of material, smoother transitions, and better spelling and grammar could have made this one of the all-time great motorsports books. As it stands, it is a collection of cool stories, but not a very good book. It feels as if you are reading straight from a reporter's transcribed interview notes at many points.I really hope a second edition of the book comes out that does proper justice to the book's material. I would buy the second edition to go along with this one. Until then, as I said, the book is worth buying anyways, but it's a fight to get through, not the pleasure that it could be.

This book has so much real inside information it could be used as a primer for folks thinking of what it takes to be a racer. What I'm finding extra-fascinating is reading inside stories about how some of my racing heroes and their teams "made it happen". I have been a fan of motorsports since the mid-1960s and have watched the careers of most of the people featured in this book. Even growing up in the racing "desert" of NYC, I read and watched everything I could get my hands on but was only conversant with tidbits and results. This book fills in so many blank pages it's like having a DVR of historic events that you can rewind and fast forward.

This book took me a moment to fully understand. I didn't realize going in how much ground it was going to cover. It goes over multiple forms of motorsport, and breaks them down into different components, telling stories about different areas of technology improvements over the years. It jumps around A LOT between forms of motorsport. Once I got the concept that it was just a collection, rather than a continual narrative, I was able to sit back and really enjoy it. I tend to stick to 4 wheel racing and know nothing about motorcycle racing, but I still read the motorcycle sections because I got so wrapped up in them. This is not a book for the racing beginner, but for someone who has been watching racing for a few years and wants to go deeper, I would certainly recommend it.

I could not put this book down. Once I started reading it .....I was HAD! My wife said "What the heck are you reading? Go to sleep and turn of that damn light!!"This book filled in so many holes the history I know and also taught me so much about things I thought I already knew. As a Motorsports NUT this is a feast for your brain.Norm DeWitt dug up stuff that was so interesting and detailed. I learned a lot about all phases of motorsports. While I was reading this book, I went to the Long Beach International motorcycle show. My friend Mary McGee introduced me to Norm DeWitt! I was blown away......we talked for about and hour! This is a long book, but you just can't put it down! I think I will read it again just so I retain all the great nuggets that are in here.

If you want to get a gift for someone who wants to get the inside scoop on how racers prepped their cars, both in the good old days, and today, but them this book. Norm has interviewed lots of the insiders in our sport, and is sharing their stories with you, so you can see how its really done. He's had the privilege of being able to sit done with some of the greats, like Phil Hill, and the Andretti's. and Dan Gurney. This reads like a collection of short stories, which is good, because they all lead to one thing: making it faster. Buy it for that person who wants a good read and a great intro on the sport. Enjoy.

I'm a fan of the 1980's - 1990's TransAm series, Roush/ Protofab/ Bob Riley/ Dan Binks/ Tommy Kendall, and met Dan once on a tour of the Roush empire back in the mid 90's (hanging out with Chris Economaki, what a day!).From that perspective the stories involving such characters were interesting, the remainder of subjects and stories somewhat less so, but mainly because the writing is laborious. The book doesn't flow at all, bounces around, and I ultimately lost interest.BTW, there are no tips/ techniques on making a vehicle perform better ;)

This book is a great collection of stories about man's endless endeavor to be faster in a race car. The Indy Race Series and Formula 1 have stretched man's engineering ability to the limits in trying to find the elusive one more mile per hour. This book tells many stories of the men and the machines that set the records. It is written in an interesting style that will keep your attention. I highly recommend it.

You won't find this kind of stuff just anywhere. There is some genius-derived information that will explain a great deal of what you might have only sensed went on in the background of top-level racing, automotive and motorcyclitive (sic). I would have Loved this book if the author had bothered to hire a decent editor. Still an essential read. Cheers, Norm!
