Londinium: A New Map and Guide to Roman London

Review

This is a new edition by our Fellow Peter Rowsome of the long out-of-print and out-of-date Ordnance Survey map of Roman London, which many of us own, and that was last revised around 1983, thus, as Peter says, ‘pre-dating many important discoveries and unforgivably omitted Roman Southwark entirely, only showing the area north of the Thames! The expanded map makes up for such omissions, with illustrated text on the flipside; Tracy Wellman, of MOLA, has done a great job in designing the map and it has been published in time to be linked to a new Museum of London iTunes and iPhone app.' (Christopher Catling SALON - The Society of Antiquaries Online Newsletter, No. 260, 15 August 2011)

I am a new author, and am currently working on a novel involving an archeological theme involving the 'Londinium' time frame. This map is just what I was looking for. It is absolutely wonderful and detailed and fun to explore! The map shows the old 'city' interlaced with modern London along with archeological discoveries. As a lover to anything archeology and ancient Rome, this map is both stunning and informative! Easily one of the 'best' purchases I have ever made. I am so thrilled to have it and look forwards to exploring more of it in the future!

"How I Play Golf" is easily the best instructional golf book I've ever come across. As I read the book, I was amazed at both the amount of information and the level of detail. Yes, Tiger obviously covers the fundamentals (vital information!) but he also discusses numerous more advanced topics (like hitting stingers and chipping with a 3-wood). Golfers of all skill levels can benefit enormously from this book. However, if you're just starting out, buy this book. It could save you years of frustration on the course. For what it's worth, the (mild) review/criticisms of this book are weak. I don't see why Tiger was supposed to exclude (or re-write and re-photograph) great pieces previously included in issues of Golf Digest (which probably represents less than 1% of the book). To say this book is a rehash of old Golf Digest articles is flat-out wrong (I also subscribe to Golf Digest).I have both "How I Play Golf" and a couple of David Leadbetter's instructional books - including "The Fundamentals of Hogan". In my opinion, Tiger's book is more far more understandable and useful (but that's just my opinion). Is this Tiger's version of "Five Lessons"? No. Why re-invent the wheel. Besides, that was 1957. Different time, different equipment, different players, different courses, different approaches, different books. Both good, but different.

Tiger will not only be one of the game's greatest players, but also one of the game's greatest students! From his coach to his competitors to observers, he is known as one so passionate about the sport that he studies, refines and experiments with what is best for him. This is an exceptional production -- large in format, with wonderful photos and drawings and aids to communicate visually the teaching point Tiger is getting across. It works! For example, see the neat grip guesser visual on putting pressure. Many of us amateurs don't even begin to think about grrip pressure, especially with the blade. The section on the head game is superb! Tiger's strength is here and there is such good advice and an abundance of it.I'm just starting to mine this top-notch resource which we've all been excited to have from Tiger. From that captivating, genuine smile on the cover through each page, we will find much to import into our golf games.Play away!

TIGER WOODS: How I Play Golfwith the Editors of Golf Digest(Warner Books)© Marc Wickert December 27, 2009[...]The beauty of this modern age for anybody into anything is that there are instructional books and DVDs by the best practitioners in the world in every field imaginable - golf, mixed martial arts, tennis... even books on how to grow handlebar mustaches. The thing is, no matter where you live on the planet, you can hop online and order a book or DVD, then start receiving tuition from the greatest exponent in any chosen sport or interest.TIGER WOODS: How I Play Golf is a perfect example, where you can have the world No.1 for your mentor. As the cover states: "There is simply no athlete quite like Tiger Woods. His domination of golf is unparalleled."CONTENTS:Preface - How to Start (Yearning to Learn)Chapter One - How to Putt (Rolling the Rock)Chapter Two - How to Get It Down (Turning Three into Two)Chapter Three -How to Escape from Sand (Making the Hard Easy)Chapter Four - How to Swing (Building an Action to Last)Chapter Five - How to Flag Your Irons (Knocking Down the Pin)Chapter Six - How to Nail Fairway Woods (Playing the Versatile Clubs)Chapter Seven - How to Smoke the Driver (Going with All You've Got)Chapter Eight - How to Handle Problems (When it Starts Getting Ugly)Chapter Nine - How to Stay in Control (Managing Your Game)Chapter Ten - How to Master the Mind (Winning Psychology)Chapter Eleven - How to Get Strong (Surviving as the Fittest)Chapter Twelve - How to Play (Enjoying the Journey)All instructions from Tiger are clearly worded and accompanied by excellent photos to make your lessons with him easy to follow and put into practice. As with the best of the best in all sports - Fedor Emelianenko in MMA, Roger Federer in tennis, or Tiger Woods in golf - there is more to the player's winning ways than meets the eye. All elite champions have great mental powers. And as mentioned above, TIGER WOODS: How I Play Golf also contains the chapter, How to Master the Mind, which covers some very interesting aspects of Tiger's mental approach to the game. This is an outstanding publication for any professional or would-be golfer.

This book is a must for any golfer wishing to improve his/her game. It is clearly written with great sequential pictures and illustrations. It explains many of the fundamentals in an easy to understand manner. Based on the information in the book, I changed my grip and technique for putting and I am much more consistent. I also changed my grip and swing technique for my drives with much better results. With some practice over the past month using the techniques from this book, I've moved from a 90's to 80's golfer. It is the best golf book I've ever read.

Sincere, honest, golf tips by a great golfer.

Raised on Radio, by Gerald Nachman

From Publishers Weekly

Before it fell victim to the voracious adolescence of television in the late 1950s and early 1960s, American radio was the country's dominant cultural force. It served as a testing ground for new advertising and marketing models, created huge celebritiesAJack Benny and Fred Allen, for exampleAand installed programs such as Amos 'n' Andy and You Bet Your Life in America's cultural pantheon. There have been several attempts to create a popular history of the medium's Golden Age but none quite as successful as Nachman's book. Organized thematically rather than chronologically, the 24 chapters cover everything from radio's domestic comedies ("Nesting Instincts") and the quiz-show phenomenon ("Minds Over Matter") to the medium's dependence on ethnic types ("No WASPS Need Apply"). A syndicated humor columnist and reporter on the arts, Nachman also presents vivid portraits of radio's major figures and a few of its fascinating minor ones, including maverick comic Henry Morgan and horror maven Arch Obler, the Rod Serling of his day. Nachman doesn't shy away from such issues as racism and sexism; throughout he stresses the overarching theme that radio has served as a national conscience and a socioeconomic mirror. He takes such delight in chronicling the medium's rise and fall that even readers raised away from radio will understand why a whole generation projected their imaginations onto this vast sonic canvas. From Kirkus Reviews

A sharp, nostalgic homage to the golden era of radio, told as both a memoir and a social history. Nachman, a columnist for the New York Times syndicate, attempts to explain just how radio came to define American pop culture from the 1920s to the '40s by examining the personalities, genres, and behind-the-scenes politics of network radio productions. As the earliest tycoons (like George Washington Hill of the American Tobacco Company and barn broadcaster Dr. Frank Conrad) contributed to radios availability and mass-market appeal, a boom began that drew talent of varying degrees and generated a patriotic hype not unlike that which surrounds todays information superhighway: radio was to be the American medium that would bring culture and democracy around the globe. Instead, it introduced advertising to the country and created the formatssoap operas, news, sports, variety, sitcom, and dramathat remain in popular entertainment to this day. Nachman recalls the 30 remarkable years of radios reign by remembering the programsinspired first by vaudeville, then by Broadwaythat he enjoyed as a child: from the sassy satirist Fred Allen (the David Letterman of radio) to the fluffy but arousing teen-girl dramas like Junior Miss. Mirroring the countrys domestic politics, radio programs of that era attempted to sweeten immigrant stereotypes and launch antiracist images of blacks (in what Nachman calls a rather thin rainbow coalition): the Italian immigrant comedy Life with Luigi, the blue-collar characters in The Life of Riley, and the Jewish family in The Goldbergs all told the immigrant story with bursts of ethnic humor and staunch American patriotism. Beulah, a show about a black maid, tried to honor black culture (while using white actorsa practice that happily died out early on). Still lovable despite its flaws, network radio through Nachmans eyes is a treat. A humorous account of a radiophiles memory and longing for the return of the lost era. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

I was raised on radio and I love this book. Reading it is like sitting down with Nachman in a booth at the Stage deli, ordering sandwiches, and listening to him dish about all the radio stars and programs I listened to when I was growing up. He's opinionated and he tells great stories and some of them reflect his own likes and dislikes but who cares? He's the one talking and it's fascinating. He covers it all from the 1930s and the beginning of commercial radio with Sarnoff and Paley all the way to what he calls "The Last Hurrah" with NBCs "the Big Show," the last gasp of radio in its struggle with television. He tells a lot of affectionate stories (and a few not so affectionate about certain personalities) about Fibber McGee and Molly, and Amos `n' Andy, Fanny Brice and Fred Allen, Groucho Marx, and on and on and even covers the musical programs and news programs (think Edward R. Murrow) and a lot of radio personalities I barely remember or didn't even know about.Even though the book is chronological, you can pick up this book, turn to a random chapter and start reading. And I bet you won't put it down.

I really love this book... Its a great read... neither overly scholarly (as in Zzzzzzzzzzzzz...) nor overly wishy washy like some titles that might come to mind. Its just one of those books you can sit back, read and enjoy. In the process you'll get a great overview of the rise and fall of radio... you'll meet the stars and the personality in front of and behind the mic, from the actors and executives, right down to the writers and sound effects men. - - I'm not sure if one could call it definitive... but for sure whether its definitive or not, it tells the story well and is re-readable as many of those classic radio shows are still relistenable. - - All in all, if you're a die hard "OTR" buff and want to know who played so and so in episode 154 of a certain radio show, its original airdate, and when it re-aired... the book probably isn't for you... - - If, however, to hear the story of radio as a whole, relive this golden age, and experience it not only from the perspective of the people who made it, and the generation that grew up on it this is one must have piece of literature - - (...to boot, almost all of my favorite radio shows were covered... atleast in brief !)

I refer to Jerry's book many times in my weekly column, Radio Somewhere, in the Asbury Park Press. Jerry has managed to capture all the reasons we loved these radio shows in a highly readable format, taking us through the medium's various stages of maturity. He brings the characters, who we either loved or have heard so much about, to life with all the quirks, escapades, talents and foibles that their actors' possessed. And he gives plenty of context with which to understand the influences on the business and the shows themselves. Lots of behind the scene perspectives. Jerry loves radio and still hosts a radio show, Mind Over Matter, weekly on NPR's KALW-FM, from San Francisco. Reading Raised on Radio you can't help but wish it was all just getting started again. It's a great ride.

The author does a wonderful job of exploring the history of popular shows from the "Golden Age" of radio. Reading this text is just like enjoying a great meal; taking time to experiencing a return to the median that entertained as younger folks. Personally I'd like to thank the author for this trip.Radio is gone for ever but opening this book lets us return to an excellent adventure in time travel!

you can fill a book with all the info you didnt know about the great radio days with Mr Nachmans knowledge.you get to hear all the voices of yester-year without sitting on the floor in front of the ol' Philco. fabulous reading....And a great follow-up to "Seriously Funny"

Anyone in his 70s remembers the Golden Age of Radio. Gerald Nachman, an old college classmate of mine, is at or near that age. The result is a strong book that isn't based on others' recollections, but is based on Nachman's own experiences. Certainly he verified some facts by using normal research and reference tools, but Gerry's memories here are his own. They're vivid, they're succinct, and they're just wonderful. Raised on Radio is a gem, not because my friend wrote it, but because its title is truthful, thus the stories inside the book are truthful.

Informative, entertaining, nostalgic, and well-written. It brought back many memories of gathering around that Bakelite radio and being swept away into worlds of adventure, laughter, and drama ("melo-drama" we called it then). This book is a treasure for those who lived through the era and an enlightenment for those who came after.

This one was suggested by my sister and it did not disappoint. I was transported to the days of yesteryear and I enjoyed the trip. What research! And the photos were great as well. As Bob Hope would say, "Thanks for the Memory!"

The book is super small, about 100 pages and smaller than my hand. Would not have paid $12 if seen in person, maybe $5. Haven't read it yet, will update when I do

While Iceland has become more known to the rest of the world in the past decade, there is still much to be desired in the realm of folktales, language resources, and culture related materials. Thankfully, Alda is helping to turn this around. These folktales were completely new to me, and as enjoyable a read as any Grimm tale. I look forward to reading them in their original Icelandic. Next on my list: "The Little Book Of The Icelanders"!

beautiful stories ~ lovely prep for a trip to iceland

Short, sweet and packed with good stories. If you've read about Iceland, traveled to Iceland, or know anyone from Iceland, the legends in this book are totally unique.Best of all, the author gives a brief analysis of the stories explains the historical and cultural context. Totally unlike Grimm's fairytales and those of the European continent, Iceland's literature is a gem.I'm looking forward to reading more of Alda's books.

As an Icelander I enjoyed the way this book was presented and written. Non Icelanders will find this book to be entertaining as well as an insight into the culture.

Very good prep for my trip.

I've had a fascination with Iceland (as it seems a lot of non-Icelanders do) since taking a short trip there a number of years ago. I follow a few blogs by Icelanders, including Alda Sigmundsdóttir's The Iceland Weather Report, which is how I heard about her Icelandic Folk Legends translation. Anyone who has read Grimm's Fairy Tales knows these kinds of stories aren't just for children, and I really enjoyed the Icelandic twist on this classic form. In her wonderful introduction, Sigmundsdóttir sets up the innate mysteriousness of Iceland's environment and the historical context during which these stories were first repeated to help pass the harsh dark winters. And then there's the stories themselves, which are -- as I'd hoped -- pleasingly unusual. As Sigmundsdóttir explains in the introduction, the broad outlines of some of the stories are familiar. For instance, you might recognize Rumpelstiltskin, warped and refracted through Icelandic eyes though he is. But then there are uniquely Icelandic elements, like tales of the hidden people and a positive stepmother character. And you've probably never read anything quite like "Thorgeir's Bull."

Fantastic book--- just what I expected, thanks guys, very interesting about the hx of Icelands people in their past. Phil

Gaslight (Crossbreed, #4) by Dannika Dark. Ah, Gaslight, it all makes sense in the end. This is an excellent read and a great addition to the Crossbreed series. I enjoy a book that engages the reader and in the end, makes you think. The general storyline unfolds as Raven works on a vampire trafficking case but there is an underlying influence that is deceptively innocuous. I loved Christian's character in this book. He's always been guarded in the previous Crossbreed books and in Gaslight, we see a more vulnerable side to him. I had a love/hate relationship with Raven this time around. I think though, after reflecting on this, that may have been the author's intent. She's tough but also very young by Breed standards. This doesn't end on a cliffhanger and I feel you could read it as a stand alone but you'd be missing out. If you enjoy the Mageri Series, you'll like this a well.

Seriously love everything she writes! This book was so dang good I couldn’t stop reading it and I can’t wait for more. Her books are action filled without being too busy and they have the best characters....they don’t seem fake. They have real issues we all deal with and give you so many ways of looking at life situations. She reels you in and soon your husband is like are you coming up for air? Nope! Her world is so real it immerses you in it. I’m not so great with words but you will fall in love with her writing style and all the flawed beautiful characters.

Well she did it again. When a favorite author brings out a new book, it’s difficult sometimes to be unbiased, but then they wouldn’t be a favorite author if she/he weren’t a wonderful storyteller. Dannika Dark is definitely a wonderful storyteller. So yes, she wrote another story that rivaled all of her best work and although I usually stay away from saying this(mostly), I think this one is the best in this series. However, I must qualify this by saying that the previous installment, Deathtrap, is right up there close to Gaslight in that respect.Raven Black is now one of my favorite urban fantasy heroines and has been pretty much from the time book one, Keystone, was released. She’s a half breed, vampire/mage, and takes powers from both sides. She doesn’t have all the powers, but enough to make her lethal. She detests drinking blood and doesn’t really have to, but will in order to heal. She’s had to heal on many occasions since joining Keystone, a clandestine organization used by the Breed higher authority to manage difficult situations of the supernatural kind. Breed is the name for the many supernatural characters that inhabit the world and live side by side humans who remain blissfully unaware. Christian Poe is Raven’s partner and now love interest. He first showed up in Dark’s Mageri series and became a favorite of many readers. Now he’s back, and he’s still the snarky vampire that everyone loved and for me anyway, he has truly become a perfect hero for this series. I wasn’t the big fan others were, but now I am right there with all the Christian fans. He has truly proven himself, especially with this installment. All of the characters that belong to Keystone have become important to each book as well. A couple of mages, a sensor, a gravewalker, two shifters, a chita, a vampire and Raven make up the organization. And are really now, almost family for each other. Each book takes on another case for this motley crew to solve. This time it concerns vampires turning innocents and selling them on the black market. When Raven starts working on cold cases, this one stands out to her and she’s determined to solve it. Little does she know how one case can change a person so much and not necessarily for the good. Christian is in protector mode for most of the book and I enjoyed seeing how much he cares for Raven. This is probably one of the darkest of any of this authors work, although some of her Mageri series was pretty dark as well. Dark was able to both keep me on the edge of my seat, and cause my blood pressure to skyrocket at times. She can write a paranormal thriller to rival any of them out there. The difference with this author’s thrillers is that the characters are so well written that you begin to really care about them, more so than most other books. At least in my case anyway. When that happens, and things go south, she has the ability to make your emotions go haywire. She skillfully tempers that with humor between the other characters interactions. And humor is always appreciated by me! The romance parts don’t hurt either. If you are looking for a paranormal thriller with touches of romance and humor, you can’t go wrong with this book or the whole series. Or anything this author writes. And that’s something I can’t say about that many authors. Highly recommended to adult urban fantasy/paranormal romance fans. I can’t say enough good about this book!I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.(originally posted on Rabid Reads)

Dannika, you're an amazing storyteller. You kept my interest throughout the book. I love the intrigues of all the characters and I can't wait when each of their stories comes to fruition. Most of all, I love Raven and Christian's story, The continuous bickering, bets they made and their subtle flirtation and watching their relationship progressed. I particularly relish when Christian said "If that be the truth, then ruin me, Precious, Ruin me" Love it!!!

This book is beyond amazing. It pulls from every book in the series so far and is filled with so many moments that pull you back into the back story. I look back and remember the days when I couldn’t stand Christian... he has grown as a person over the years. This is why I love Dannika’s books. She makes these people come to life, she developes their lives, their personalities, she lets us see their hopes and dreams and successes and failures. She creates a past and has us looking into their future. I can’t imagin the web of notes she must have to keep! Read this book. Read all her books. Their amazing!!! Escapeing reality into Dannika’s world is the best way to spend your day!

Finally Christian and Raven!!The 4th book in the Crossbread series is gut wrenching. Raven's past finally has some heed way and we learn much about both her vampire and mage sides. More stories with other characters are also starting to form and branch out and it's exciting to learn more about these characters past and how it's come back to effect them now.«»"I might ruin your life.""If that be the truth, then ruin me, Precious. Ruin me."«»I might have (definitely did) cried happy romantic tears. Can't wait for book 5

Total book hangover after reading Gaslight. I will once again be counting down for the next book in the series. Read Dannika Dark's books, just read them

The Joker, by Brian Azzarello Lee Bermejo

From Publishers Weekly

Building on Heath Ledgers performance in The Dark Knight (although long before the movies debut), Azzarello creates a memorably cringe-worthy story. Rather than a natty Clown Prince of Crime, this Joker looks like a glam rocker gone to toxic seed. Newly released from Arkham Asylum, he begins disorganizing the criminal establishment of Gotham City. Although he claims to want power and money when he confronts Two Face and his peers, he really seems just to enjoy playing with people—shooting them, setting them on fire or skinning them alive. Accompanying him is Jonny Frost, a young thug who takes a long time to recognize the drawbacks of seeing a vicious sociopath as a role model. Like Jonny, however, readers may find that, horrifying as the Joker is, they cant take their eyes off him. Even Batman, when he inevitably enters the action, functions largely as the Jokers partner in a dance of death. Azzarello has learned how to create a menacing, morally ambivalent atmosphere in his years of scripting 100 Bullets, and Bermejos jagged, shadow-saturated art sustains the mood. The result is fascinating but extremely dark. (Nov.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist

Batman’s preeminent foe comes to the fore, and the Caped Crusader makes only a fleeting appearance at the end in this graphic novel scripted by hard-boiled crime-comics author Azzarello that sees the Crime Clown, newly released from Arkham Asylum, attempting to take Gotham City back from the underworld figures who have carved it up in his absence. The story is told from the perspective of a small-time hood who stumbles into being the Joker’s henchman. Azzarello’s Joker hews closely to Heath Ledger’s portrayal in the film The Dark Knight. He’s a genuine psychopath, whose unpredictability is his strongest weapon. Chillingly cruel and criminally insane, he still isn’t so outré that he couldn’t conceivably exist in a non-comic-book world. Two-Face, the Penguin, and the Riddler are here, too, similarly muted compared to their usual comic-book personae and active in the most squalid version of Gotham City ever put on paper or celluloid, a sleazy milieu that Lee Bermejo’s deliberately ugly artwork, aided by a muddily muted color scheme, well realizes. --Gordon Flagg

One thing that has always been a source of pride for comic book and graphic novel readers has been watching a film or animated series and knowing the origin from a certain story arc or novel. In this case the tables have been turned. 'The Joker', released in 2008 the same year as The Dark Knight, is a novel that uses the Joker incarnation from the film. This is something as a comic reader that disturbs me.These characters are just that, they are characters created many, many decades ago and by artists (filmmakers included) may be interpreted any which way they seem fit. However I would NEVER use a character from a film in a comic book, that is backwards to me, seeing as how the film in one way was trying to imitate a comic book character. Having said all that, the story is fine the dialog is pretty good, very grim and the art is odd and eccentric (which is perfect for the book).

This is a book I've wanted for awhile now, because I'll see parts of it floating around on facebook or twitter or tumblr, but then I'll forget all about it prety quickly. I really do like the art style, because it's so gritty and has a heavy grunge feeling to it. This take on the Joker is somehow darker than most takes (who knew that was possible) and seeing more about Johnny is always great. Seeing Harley as more of a hitman at the Joker's side was interesting, but honestly I would have liked her doing or saying more than she did in this book. The version of her here looked different and like she could of been quite intriguing.

That we could know the Joker? We are Jonny Frosts ... no matter how many graphic novels we read or observe the "plots" involving the Joker; " we know nothing, Jon Snow", absolutely nothing...The Bat confronts and mocks, and it gets under the ghoulish skin of Joker... no kill, no grovel, no death as release. I loved Heath Ledger's portrayal of Joker but it was exceedingly dark... recommend but no, not for the kiddies... brilliant art. The Joker lives as our worst nightmare of a criminal.... no pattern, no predictions, just terrifying...

I love this book because everything comes together so well. Brian Azzarello is a master storyteller, and he dialogue works on many levels with the action and the plot coming together. Lee Bermejo is an excellent artist, and he makes the grimy streets of Gotham and the world of the Joker really come alive. This is not the first time this dynamic duo has come together, and every time they do it’s an amazing collaboration. This is one of those comics you can read several times over and will notice something new every time, with it’s incredible yet subtle attention to details. The dialogue and images come together to create a compelling meditation on crime’s appeal to our culture, and however the end the payoff is rarely what we envisioned it to be.

Brian Azzarello wrote this book and I liked story as well as the art, it keeps you reading and want to see what is going to happen, now, on the other hand, this could be or not the book for you, and this is because the Joker is not so the Prince Clown of Crime, it is more dark Knight Joker (Gangster). So in my own opinion I can mention the following likes and dislikes:Likes:• The art on the Book (Bermejo) is really good. Forms, bodies and shapes are well detailed.• The story involved many Batman villains• It is complete book about the JokerDislikes:• Joker is draw as Hugh Ledger’s Joker• Joker is not as criminal as other tales.• Killer Croc is not the real Killer Croc

The Joker is an exceedingly difficult character to write and success has been rarely achieved. In order to capture the essence of The Joker a writer needs to descend into the far reaches of dark humor. The problem is that The Joker's psychology is meant to be so separated from accepted thinking that a normal, well adjusted writer finds it near impossible to arrive at that dark place and most of his `jokes' fall flat. It reminds me of why writers invariably fail to capture evil geniuses, because you have to be a genius to create believable dialogue like a genius. Another problem is that the comic Joker has developed such a cartoonish appearance with the elongated chin and purple pimp clothes that it's difficult to take him serious even when he's killing scores of people. It's like Jason and Michael Meyers. No one is scared of them because they're just cartoons. The more divorced from reality the less scary. The movie The Dark Knight reinvented the Joker with a considerably toned down visual appearance and darker attitude. The Dark Knight had more than a few flaws, particularly in the scripting, but it positively nails The Joker who stole the show and helped the movie become the second highest grossing film of all time. Brian Azzarello's, Joker, is pulled from the movie with a grungy appearance, disgusting greasepaint, carved out grin and anarchist mentality. There are no more squirting flowers or electrocuting joy buzzers. Azzarello's Joker is also legitimately terrifying, like a rabid dog with a genius IQ. What can you do to The Joker, maim him? This one is already a mess. Could you threaten to kill him? The Joker is fully prepared to die.The story is told from the view of a low level henchman named Jonny Frost who travels with The Jokers following his release from prison. This is not the canonized world of DC comics it's more of an elsewhere story existing somewhere between the regular comic and the world of the Dark Knight. My understanding is that Two Face did not survive the movie but he does appear in this story so already it clearly isn't a direct sequel. The other Batman villains including Killer Croc, The Penguin and The Riddler are written and drawn to be much more realistic in line with what you might expect in the movies.Speaking as a huge fan of Alan Moore I have to say that this is a better interpretation of The Joker than the legendary `Killing Joke'. The Batman only makes an appearance in the last few pages and the encounter is perfect. It is clear throughout the book that The Joker rules the criminal roost even among the rogues gallery. He is smarter and more ruthless than anyone else but here in the last few moments The Joker finally meets his match and The Batman drops a line so perfect I wouldn't dare to reveal it here. In the end Jonny Frost learns that this is The Joker and The Batman's world, he was only living in it.
