The Forge of Darkness is the first book in the Kharkanas Trilogy. It is a prequel trilogy, taking place hundreds of thousands of years before the immense Malazan Books of the Fallen. Its focus will be the splintering of the Tiste people--what happened and why.Structurally, this seems to be a real change from how Erikson wrote all of the MBoF. In that series, even though there were continuing storylines, each book seemed to be more self-contained, with climaxes built into each volume. So, for example, we got the Chain of Dogs story, which climaxed and had resolution within a single volume, although there were characters and storylines which continued into subsequent volumes. The Forge of Darkness, however, is structured more like the first volume in a traditional fantasy series. When it climaxes, it is rather a setup for the next volume in the series. There is no resolution to the storylines found here; this is buildup to the larger storyline.In many other ways, this is a typical Steven Erikson novel. There is a massive pool of characters, with revolving POVs from many of them. Even though it is set hundreds of thousands of years before the MBoF, there's already lots of hazy backstory that we learn about through rumor and speculation. Characters are prone to rumination and philosophizing.Many familiar characters appear here: Gothos, Draconus, Anomander Rake, Silchas Ruin, just to name a few. No, we don't get POVs from any of these high level characters. That duty falls to numerous other friends, relations, vassals, etc who live and act around these familiar names.If you've made your way through all 10 books of The Malazan Books of the Fallen, then absolutely you'll want to read this. Most likely you are someone engaged with the complexities of Erikson's world, and you are used to some of its more difficult aspects. There are so many under explained portions of his creation that there is more than enough room for prequels without falling into the many usual traps of that sort of thing.If you are new to the Malazan world, should you start here? That probably would not be my recommendation. The Forge of Darkness is no less complex than any of the Malazan books which have preceded it. Without the perspectives of the Malazan soldiers, Erikson's writing is more opaque than is perhaps usual. His Tiste perspectives given in this book are more detached, and archaic in their speech and manner. It's an unusual choice, and one that makes it more difficult for new readers than the more modern manner of his Malazans.

I read this book when it came out, and recently reread it. That being said, DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE MAIN SERIES. For a new reader there is too much going on, too much character and world introduction to really grasp the story. If you had previously read Malazan Book of The Fallen this book serves as some small part of the backstory for quite a few of the characters, and allows you to see the difference between Them Then (this Trilogy) and Them Now (Malazan Series). This book whets your appetite, it sets you up for the character arcs (such as the friendship between Anomander and Caladan, The turning away of Mother Dark, How the Daughters of Father Shadow came to be), it sets the stage for the world altering dramatic events (Jaugut war, Sundering of the Tiste Realm, Kallor Maybe (I hope!), The creation of the warrens/holds). Without fore knowledge of these events you can not appreciate the setting of the stage.Reading this book first and rating it as a complete story, is like rating a fine dinner based on only the appetizer, without having any prior knowledge of what food is or how to eat it. This book is an appetizer, not the full course.My only question is: Where is Quick Ben? You know he has to be here somewhere......

Erikson has one of the longest running fantasy series in his Malazan series, you want to read his other books first even though this is a prequel. His other books tend to become a little long-winded but always very very good. This one is more concise and on point. This prequel offers quite a few surprises, offering a different take on characters you thought you knew quite well. A must read for any Erikson fan.

Like the entire Book of the Fallen series, this prequel follows the style and tone that is Erikson's trademark. In other words, it's dark, gloomy, and morose. Human expectations are all about destruction, failure, and enduring pain, but there is always a thread of light where by embracing these moribund tenants, the characters in the end manage to find enlightenment.Erikson is true to form here. The story is complex. The character's motives are often hidden. Everybody, even the near-omnipotent, makes mistakes. The fantasy races involved, like in Book of the Fallen, seem to love to cut down forests and never replant (this seems to be one of Erikson's favorite tropes to rant on -- but it's a minor flaw that doesn't detract from the story too much). There is much death and destruction, and again true to form, much of it is derived from massive misunderstanding driven by a few errant characters. It makes the death even that much more sad.It may sound like I didn't like this book, but I did. The writing is excellent. The story is complex and rich. It is one of the most imaginative stories and worlds that I have ever read. It's well worth the effort of slogging through the depression and environmental rants.

Okay, there are two versions of these books on Amazon. One is the light novel, the other is the manga, but the manga isn't listed when you search for it.In order to view and purchase the manga instead of the light novel, you need to click the arrow that says "See all formats and editions" and then click on the paperback formats. One of those paperbacks will be the manga. It'll have a different cover and say "The Manga Companion" in the title.The first 3 volumes of the manga are listed this way along with the light novels. I don't know why they have it set up like that, but you can totally buy the manga on Amazon too.By the way, I buy both the manga and novels. The novels go into a lot more detail, and the manga has some really nice artwork.

UPDATE: So Amazon sent me a replacement copy and it is exactly the same screwed up copy, so it looks like the entire print run is bad. The publisher and Amazon should look into this and track down all the bad copies before they are shipped to customers.I would love to review the book's contents, but I can't. This instead is a review aimed at the publisher, because I definitely have the product and it is certainly screwed up.I received a copy of what claims to be Shield Hero Vol 2 that was clearly messed up, the cover art didn't fill the whole page (you can even see the cutting guides for properly presenting the cover and a wide white margin), the book was not as thick as volume one (this book is only 239 pages compared to the claimed 300), and had larger size pages. The interior of the book wasn't Shield Hero Vol 2 at all. It was instead a student coaching guide book called "The Growth Mindset Coach by Annie Brock and Heather Hundley", The Growth Mindset Coach: A Teacher's Month-by-Month Handbook for Empowering Students to Achieve which I'm sure is a wonderful book if you are actually looking to get a student coaching guide book and a not a fantasy themed Japanese light novel.I can only assumed someone seriously screwed up an entire print run at the publisher and then completely failed to notice the books weren't right before shipping them out, or that this book was POD and they screwed it up. This shouldn't have happened, there's no way this book looks correct. This should have been caught at multiple points before it reached me, even the Amazon employee who packaged it should have realized it was wrong. I've included two pictures because this was a weird one, I've had missing pages before, and damaged pages, and faint pages, I've never had the completely wrong book in a really obviously wrong cover.Fortunately it looks like Amazon will let me return it for a new copy, at the minor inconvenience of having to run to the local UPS to drop it off. Maybe if the next copy is correct I'll review the actual contents of Shield Hero Vol 2.

I read a lot of trashy isekai novels so I set the bar pretty low when it comes to having any expectations here. While the first book seemed pretty rough, I thought it might at least improve once the writer found his groove. However, it somehow has gotten even worse. Repetitive descriptions, bland language, cringy behaviors all around, there isn't much to like.Just read this description of a race that occurs early on:***Kind of spoilers below***It was like a motorcycle versus a motorized bicycle. Naturally, Filo was the motorcycle in this case whereas Motoyasu was stuck with a motorized bycle. That's how much faster we were.Filo shouted in joy, as if to show off how confident we were with our lead. It was like being on a motorcycle.Again, I have very low standards when it comes to this genre. I just want something simple but enjoyable to burn through. This series is just plain lazy with few, if any, redeeming qualities to be said of it. I honestly don't understand how anyone could justify greater than 3 stars for this title, much less the 4.5+ it is averaging over 120 reviews. Complete waste of money, avoid.

I love this series and the fact its the light novel version. The reason is because of the fact that there more detail as the manga glosses over alot of situations or skips some all together. If the manga is important try a manga reader app, but I strongly advise buying the light novels too so you get the full story. I have read both and can safely say they compliment each other. If you only want one version, then go with this one. Thanks for your time and hope I helped out.

While the writing of the first volume is far from perfect, you can mostly forgive it due to the enteraining nature of the story. However, volume 2 jumps you right into an immediate back sliding of the characters, for me taking away much of the power of the rather nice ending to volume 1. We also introduce a new party member - this is pretty expected given the described nature of this world - but of course we end up it being a her, and replacing Raphtalia as the designated loli.The events continue to make you question the exact mechanics of the world; as it becomes more and more game like due to the super short travel times. The spacing of the waves at one month across continues to feel like a mechanism to force a super quick set of actions and allow the story to avoid much character development.

I downloaded this so that I could have a copy of Robert's Rules of Order in our school board meetings but it is practically useless. This is NOT the most recent 11th edition. It is the ninth and the contents, format, pages, etc. are completely different. So when you are in a meeting with that one snotty person that likes to quote Roberts and has the paperback edition, they will be able to find stuff faster than you AND they will say that their version rules because it is the most recent. Really puts you at a disadvantage to have this Kindle version.

Don't buy this version. Worst product I have ever bought from Amazon, and worst book I have ever bought anywhere. Looks like something produced by a kid and never proofed before printing. It does a disservice to a revered resource. Pretty cover, but you know what they say. I'll have to find another version somewhere.....

This book was not at all what I expected. From previous reviews, it appears that different versions of the book are available under the same heading. When I first opened the book, I thought the initial pages were errata for what followed but the entire book seemed to be some kind of annotation or perhaps abbreviation. This book does not have a table of contents or index, so trying to find something in the book is practically impossible. Unfortunately, I did not look at the book as soon as I got it nor did I need the reference within the first 30 days of ordering it so cannot return it. If you decide to order this book, be sure to look at it as soon as you get it so you can return it if you got the same version I did. I have learned my lesson and hope I can prevent someone else from making the same mistake. Now I will have to spend more money getting the right text but, this time I will go locally so I can be sure I am getting what I need. This one will go in the trash because that it all it is good for.

We bought this for our pastor to help him with an easy version of Roberts Rules of Order. It's a very nice condensed version of the basics you need to know to conduct a meeting. I liked it and will order another one for my husband. It's much better for a refresher course than than the big book. It tells everything you need to know in a short and precise format. Very handy.

Compared to my old copy (which was falling apart and had the corner chewed by a puppy), the new version is totally disorganized, the so called index is a mess and practically unreadable. It seems as if someone had the bright idea of "modernizing" it to make it more readable by attempting to clump like subjects together. Instead of moving in an organized systematic method all they did was make a mess.

I wanted the whole thing, the complete book, but this is the "pocket guide." If you look hard enough on the web page for this item, you will see that it is the "Pocket Manual of Rules of Order for Deliberative Assemblies." I didn't look hard enough before I bought it, but I should have figured the entire book wouldn't be available on Kindle for $0.99 when the paperback is $12. If it was the whole book for Kindle it would have been about $10! Fortunately, I figured it out before my 7 days were up and I was able to return it. Maybe you'll read this and save yourself the trouble.

This Kindle version of Robert's Rules of Order lacks a copyright page and an edition page necessary to authenticate it as the authoritative version for use at a meeting. Until these issues are corrected, purchase is a waste. Each edition brings changes and no one wants to stand up to argue a point only to have someone else observe aloud that you haven't bothered reading the most recent edition which changed the rule governing your argument or point. Save your money until the most recent edition is formatted for Kindle.

Anyone having responsibility to preside over meetings in a variety of settings should have a copy of this book. In it you will find the help and advice needed to prepare properly, and officiate properly. The result will be a well-run meeting that actually accomplishes something in a reasonable time. Craig and Jessica’s story really has it’s share of twists and turns! For a short story it’s excitng, well written and really holds one’s interest throughout. It’s well worth reading! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it as I do the whole series.I was given this ARC and voluntarily wrote my honest review.

I received an ARC of this book from the author, Indiana Wake, and this is my voluntary and honest review. This is another enjoyable clean romance between Craig and Jessica. This is book 9 in the Hearts and Hands Mail Order Bride series. Each book is well written and a quick read. I highly recommend any book by this author.

This is a new author to me. I enjoyed the short story but was left hanging at the end which I did not expect. I will be trying some more of her books to get a better feel for her writing. I received a complimentary copy and chose to write a brief review.

This is book 9 in the Hearts and Hands Mail Order Bride Agency. And as usual the writers don't let you down. It is another great read in a great series. Keep up the great work.

Normally, I look forward to every Indiana Wake book. This one leaves the reader hanging. Yuck! I do hope the story continues, very soon.

There are countless strong, often opposing, opinions out there about parenting in this day and age, but "Act Natural" shows that so much of what we understand about child-rearing is culturally specific and VERY recent.The book is chock-full of fascinating, often startling, history, and I found myself having to share much of what I read with my husband: "This is crazy", "Can you believe . . . !?"I was a bit disappointed to learn about the bad reputations of some of my favorite children's authors — I'll never be able to enjoy Alice in Wonderland quite the same way — but it's a small price to pay.I have a feeling I'll be getting this as a baby gift for many friends in the future.

I love this book! I only write reviews when something really makes an impact. This writer is witty and funny, the book just flows easily and is very meaty wasting no pages with fluff, and the history of parenting is just fascinating! I ended up sharing so many parts with my adult children and husband and they have shared in the laughs as well. My reason for a four star versus five star review is that the historical approaches are described in great detail, but too little time is spent describing the nuances and shifts over the last 30 to 50 years; and while some of those shifts are described, I was hoping for more hypothesis or analysis as to what factors have resulted in today's most popular approaches to the tasks of successful parenting. That said, this is a highly readable, highly informative, and highly entertaining read.

I don't know why someone hasn't tackled the brilliant idea of a cultural history of parenting before, but I'm glad the task fell to Jennifer Traig. This is a meticulously-researched and often hilarious account of parenting through the ages, much of which will go a long way to alleviating modern parenting guilt. I should note that I don't have any children myself, but I had parents and I was in fact a child once, so this book feels relevant in all sorts of ways. Traig is brutally honest about her own parental shortcomings, and puts the reader at ease through this journey. Highly recommend.

Read and compare your parents, parenting style and children to the historical ways. It will make make you feel great that you did not live in the good old days. It's a very funny book as well as informative.

Interestingly if you are a student of child development. Well researched. I lost interest after reaching the 21% mark, however, because I was looking for more of a humorous book on parenting rather than a textbook. I skimmed through most of the book. It is a great history book. I was just looking for a different type of read.

Funny, informative, and reassuring, as I wonder if I am screwing up this whole parenting thing. Could have been edited better (a few too many notes and asides, some repetitive parts) but overall an absolutely engaging book.

I loved this book. It was a fascinating trip through the history of child rearing with the perfect amount of humor sprinkled in – don’t miss a footnote! I’m going to encourage both my daughters and my daughter-in-law to read it because like most mothers today, I know they are being inundated with helpful tips from various “experts” both online and in their day to day interactions with other mothers.
