About the Author

Kylene Beers, Ed.D., is a former middle school teacher who has turned her commitment to adolescent literacy and struggling readers into the major focus of her research, writing, speaking, and teaching. She is author of the best-selling When Kids Can't Read/What Teachers Can Do, co-editor (with Bob Probst and Linda Rief) of Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise into Practice, and co-author (with Bob Probst) of Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading and Reading Nonfiction, Notice & Note Stances, Signposts, and Strategies all published by Heinemann. She taught in the College of Education at the University of Houston, served as Senior Reading Researcher at the Comer School Development Program at Yale University, and most recently acted as the Senior Reading Advisor to Secondary Schools for the Reading and Writing Project at Teachers College. Kylene has published numerous articles in state and national journals, served as editor of the national literacy journal, Voices from the Middle, and was the 2008-2009 President of the National Council of Teachers of English. Very helpful for me even though I've been teaching middle school English for 12 years. Great strategies to really get them to think

I teach 4th grade, so I'm not exactly the target audience. I'm about to start my third year teaching, and I wanted some new strategies to try for my struggling readers. This book is exactly what I needed. I can see these strategies working as low as 4th grade. (Not K-3) I love that the book sticks to traditional wisdom, but it tells you exactly what to do in the classroom. It is extremely practical. It tells you what to do for them before, during, and after reading to support the reader, but the author has teachers to get the students to do the comprehending. The author helps teachers to see how to help without doing the work for the students. The book also addresses vocabulary, fluency, spelling, and choosing the right books. I also enjoyed the style of the book. It is full of stories, so I had no trouble reading several chapters in one sitting.

I cannot speak on behalf of those with years upon years of experience teaching, so I will just address how it has benefited me. I was assigned this book for a class - and while the class itself has proved to be less than helpful, this text is full of great reading and teaching strategies that can be used in the classroom. I have used several frontloading, comprehension and vocabulary strategies from this text and they were all extremely successful - students enjoyed doing them (I get requests for the "tea party" exercise!) and they retained the information.Beers' text has been a great resource to me, and to many of my fellow classmates regardless of their content area. I have tried some of the exercises and techniques in my ELA and Social Studies student teaching placements with great success. If nothing else, this book presents a lot of useful information and experience to consider when it comes to teaching literacy. I have read a lot of books on teaching, and this one has been the most real-world applicable.

I'm a Title 1 teacher in Oregon, and I work with the types of readers that Kylene Beers talks about in her book "When Kids Can't Read: What Teachers Can Do". I found her book to be loaded with practical, "use in your classroom the next day" ideas that are easy to implement.Now, my school is an elementary school, and initially I avoided this book due to the "Guide for Teachers 6-12" label on it. Boy, was I wrong. While the focus of her book is for middle and high school teachers, most of her techniques are excellent techniques for the younger learners as well, especially the fifth grade students that I'm working with. She has taken many of the concepts we use in elementary school and upgraded them for older kids; but good teaching is good teaching, no matter what you are trying to do.This book is so practical, on the inside front cover, you are given a simple chart that list reading problems that kids have, and the chapter that you can immediately turn to in order to get ideas! It can't get any friendlier than that.However, I also suggest a more thorough read through of this content. Beers talks throughout the book of a student named George that she taught early in her career, before she knew much about teaching. Sprinkled through the text, before and after each chapter, write writes lovingly to George about how she failed him time and time again, in direct relation to the content of the chapter. As a teacher, looking back on my own career, I can totally relate to that. If I knew then what I know now... the letters become Beers "mea culpa", and they are a beautiful addition to the text.I highly recommend this book for ANY teacher struggling to teach struggling readers reading. It's practical, easy to use, and loaded with great ideas.

This is, at least for me, an paradigm-shifting book. Beers' amazingly humble, conversational style of presenting anecdotes, research and techniques appealed to me in ways that other reading texts- Stephanie Harvey, Lucy Caulkins, both of whom I find useful, just not particularly user-friendly and streamlined, have not. I also love that Beers is so encouraging of writing across the curriculum. I agree with her that layering writing assignments into content delivery serves the students, as well as over-burdened teachers- far better than stand-alone tasks that merely require of the student a downloading of information onto worksheets or standardized tests. My sole complaint is teacher's of younger students will have to connect the dots for themselves- not too bad given it was not in the scope of Beers' book. I teach elementary ELA, and found it very useful. Can't wait to use some if the gems in the coming year!

Beers frames each chapter with a brief letter to a former student, expressing a generous regret for the ways she feels she failed him when she was a new teacher. These letters strike to my heart, as the weaknesses she identifies in her own early teaching strategies echo every concern I've had as a student of English education. Beers not only explains how to remedy these concerns by telling you HOW to teach better, she models the strategies for you by providing transcripts of actual teaching experiences (both the good and the bad) to SHOW you how much difference these strategies make. She covers everything in this book, it seems. This is a must read for any English teacher, whether preparing to enter the field or already practicing.

This book is designed for teachers. It discusses problems that students often have with reading from the author's experience and then gives excellent strategies to combat that specific problem. There are multiple ideas per chapter which make it easy to customize for any classroom. I used the strategies in both a middle school classroom and high school classroom. There is also an index in the back so you can easily find any strategy. A MUST HAVE FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS! (Especially any teacher in the first 5 years of teaching.)

Wow, what a glorious work of Kabbalah. It is both esthetically pleasing and deeply spiritual. Reading it and studying from it is to drink directly the wine of Kabbalistic wisdom, that is to say the reader is thrust right into the fray, and gradually through the pot pourri of articles and sections in the book, which is somewhat of a collection of writings in the spirit of the kabbalah, and intense studies on the Hebrew alphabet, one imbibes the form and stature of a great spiritual tradition, and derives an image, some understanding, a shining light perhaps in the distance, to which one can travel and arrive someday. Knowledge of Hebrew is a definite plus, but there are many ladders and ropes to climb for the beginner so that with some endeavour, a plateau of understanding can be reached. There are helpful charts of pronunciation of the letters and the vowels, and passages for advanced study from Genesis. For one who has a background in Hebrew, the joy of swimming in these waters will be immeasurable, but even a rudimentary knowledge will be rewarded with great reverberation. The calligraphic representation of the letters themselves are done wonderfully and vividly, so as to be objects for meditative understanding. Samuel Avital has displayed great generosity in sharing his work, and his very personal tradition as scion of a long line of kabbalistic masters, in language we all can understand. There is a general philosophical overview transmitted in these pages that allows one to understand the goal and the journey for a spiritual seeker using this system, and like all systems "all roads lead to Rome", as far as full potentiation; but all roads are distinctly unique as well, and this study has a lot to offer that can illumine the soul. I was a very early adopter of Queen. I had the benefit of an avant-garde FM station in Philly, WMMR, that was always a step ahead of actual commercial releases. Listening to DJ Carol Miller's evening show I heard cuts from Queen's first album prior to its commercial release. As soon as I heard those iconic guitars I was hooked! I had never heard guitars with that unique timbre before. It, along with Freddie's unique vocals, created totally unique sounds from a bunch of guys who knew how to rock. Bought "Queen" the day it was released and couldn't get enough of it, until the release of Queen II. The second album told a story and Freddie's writing wove the songs together into a tapestry of good vs. evil. I just, some 40+ years later, pulled out my original LP and gave it a spin. The songs were every bit as wonderful as I remembered but the sound quality was not up to the quality of the music. Virtually no bass, ragged treble and compressed dynamics.What to do? Search on Amazon for a remastering, of course. And there it was... a 2011 remaster job by none other than Bob Frickin' Ludwig. Those of you who are into the audio scene will recognize Ludwig as a mastering legend. And, yes he did his magic on this CD. It is UNBELIEVABLE! Yes there is bass, very appropriately balanced. The ragged treble is gone and the stereo effects of the original have been optimized. Dynamics! Yes they are here too. This remastering has brought this wonderful music back to life with clarity and drive. Kudos to Mr. Ludwig. It must be satisfying to do what he has done with this classic album and restored the beauty and bit of the original album as the guys played it.Buy this CD. I feel guilty that I paid so little for it.

It is a great album but I received one that was faulty. They gave me a replacement that had the same problem. So, be careful when choosing to buy this album. I think a whole bunch of them weren't "pressed" right. The music is unbelievably great, as I have it on CD already. I just happen to be nostalgic when it comes to certain records, such as this.

UPDATE: Received replacement. The hole in the replacement is also too small. This indicates a manufacturing error on a larger scale. I was able to push it onto the rod to fit--but buyer beware. You can see how wonky it sits on my record player.Original review: The hole on this record was TOO SMALL to fit onto my record player. Ordered a replacement, if it also doesn't fit then it is likely a larger scale manufacturing issue and I will update this review.

Queen II saw the band finding their theatrical vision that would grow into fruition on A Night at the Opera. Simply put, the great moments were here and this is probably their heaviest album but the great songs weren't quite here yet. Due to what the band would become, Queen II is an intriguing listen especially if you didn't discover their early albums until later like I did. And you have to respect their ambition. This is certainly stronger than all of the '80s albums sans The Game and in the ballpark of News of the World. "Seven Seas of Rhye" is the most well known song here and for good reason. It is the most developed song and along with the very good "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" and the short ditty "Nevemore" really shows what would come. Otherwise, you have moments of absolute brilliance in the heavy as sin "Ogre Battle" and the epics "Father to Son" and "The March of the Black Queen". "The Loser In the End" is very good and is one of the better Roger Taylor tracks and the emotional "Funny How Love Is" is strong as well.. "Some Day One Day" also really plays like a template to the excellent Brian May tracks that would emerge later in "'39" and "Long Away". And for these reasons you can see why this is the favorite of long time fans which I totally respect. Queen II is very interesting and is a grower but if you're a newcomer you may want to start with A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, or Sheer Heart Attack before you get to this one.

It's been said by many reviewers here, but I'll say it again: Queen 2 is the band's best record. I love or really like all of Queen's records but this one is just amazing. I think that other Queen records seem to always have that one song (or more than one if we're talking Hot Space...) that just didn't speak to me; which I attribute to the their adventurous musical nature and unique sound - which is a good thing. However, on Queen 2 every song is just perfect.

Am I the only one who loves "Funny How Love Is"? Try singing along with it. Anyway, what can I say about this masterwork. This album has a certain something about it, just like the follow-up release, and the one after that. Like "Led Zeppelin IV," this mish-mash of styles just works. Honestly, how many other bands can (a) sing this well, (b) write such great songs, (c) play their instruments so well? How many? Listen to this record, you unbelievers. You lords and lady creatures. Then wonder why you ever bought an ELP record.

I purchased this Deluxe Version hoping the remix would brighten up the sound, as all the generations of CD I've owned of this album seem to have lost something as compared to the LP versions that I owned in the 70s (especially Procession). Well, I don't hear too much of a difference on side White compared to the previous generations of the CD, but side Black definitely sounds brighter, namely, the huge intro to March of the Black Queen, which for my ears is what most makes this album worth owning. So I'm pleased.The additional songs are pretty cool. I won't describe them but I'll suggest they're worth owning, moreso that the extras on the Hollywood Records release. Actually, If they'd included an instrumental mix of Millionaire Waltz on A Day at the Races, I'd have purchased that one as well.

I'm satisfied with this product. Has large zipped pocket on outside 10.5" x 6". I don't really like the velcro that holds the outer fold down - would prefer a button snap or something, but it is still functional. Inside has a place to hold a notepad 6.25" wide. Also has a mesh pocket that zips shut 6.25" wide, 5" deep. Has another pocket that is about 5"x5" that has a velcro flap which can hold something up to 1" thick. Then, 2 pen holder pockets, 4 small pockets that look like they could hold credit cards, business cards, or photos 3 5/8" wide. Then, on the inner-most portion is where the Bible goes. This portion zips shut. Looks like two more pen holders on each side of where the Bible would be. Has two flap things that I am assuming are for placing the front and back outer cover of the Bible into, or maybe for stuffing papers in. My Bible just fits perfectly, which measures about 9.5" x 6 5/8" x 1 5/8". If your Bible is bigger than these dimensions, it probably won't fit.

The review and dimensions that "the Truth "Bryan" " gave, were very accurate and led me to buy this product. It is perfect for my NIV Bible. I am thinking of uploading some pictures to have a better idea of this product. It is really a good organizer. I just whish there were more colors.

The size of this bible cover is 12.1 x 9.2 x 2.1 inches so it is one of the larger ones, but still measure your bible before you buy. It is disappointing to find out it is too small for your bible, AFTER you buy it. Make sure the tote is a good bit larger than the size of your bible so it fits INSIDE. I agree that it would be useful for any Bible cover companies that sell here to just list the maximum size of bible the tote is intended for. It has nice built in flaps to hold the bible cover in place, but again it needs to fit first. To make this easy If your bible is taller than 9 ½ inches, wider than 6 ½ inches closed, and thicker than 2.5 inches it may not fit. By the way, for this style and material, this is the largest size I found here at Amazon.com.Now the photo descriptions on the bible cover are not accurate as to what is inside, the layout is very different. So here is my description.Good quality black nylon case, has handle, with a Velcro flap. Nice outer tab with the Christian fish logo. 1 exterior 10" x 6" flat zippered pocket for papers. To gain access to the rest you have to open a velcro flap. Upon opening, it layes flat with two sides facing you. On one side there is a space for a notepad (not included) maximum 6" wide x 9" long. Behind the notepad if you put one in, is a mech zippered pocket, 6" wide x 4.5" tall. There is also an opening the length of the flap behind where the notepad would go, great for stuffing brochures or newsletters. It is 6" x 9".On the opposing side there are 4 slots or 4 card holders and one is clear for an ID or business card. Next to that are 2 more pen holders. Next to that is a 5" x 5" pocket with a velcro flap. Behind this area is a zippered area for your Bible. It has flaps to hold the cover of your bible in place if you choose to use them. I don't, I like to take my Bible out. In this interior there are 2 more pen holders, one on each side of the Bible. When the cover is open flat on a table with your bible open, it does not take very much more space than the Bible itself. It is very functional when open, and easy to read your Bible.Personally I do not like the use of Velcro in the bag, it is noisy. But maybe they will fix this in the next version; as it is this one is an update to their previous model. I recommend this Bible tote, but also check the "Purpose Driven Life Bible Cover". And to fully prepare your Bible cover for dutym may I recommend the Majestic brand Bible accessory kit too, with the markers, tabs and magnifying bookmark. It's big. And sturdy. And big. It holds everything my husband needs when he carries his Bible. Pen? Check! Notepad? Check! Bulletins from the last ten Sundays? No, wait. That's MY Bible.My husband has a large study Bible, and this organizer holds it securely. It is well-designed and does not come open when you least expect it. The handle has held up well, also. He has carried it for about a year now and is very pleased with it. When it is packed with everything he carries, it doesn't lie completely flat. It's a little rounded in the middle. Maybe he should carry less stuff... But he doesn't have to because this organizer can accommodate it.

This is really nice and sturdy. I was disappointed that it was so big for my Children's ESV. Oh well, son doesn't care. I like all the pockets and zippers. There's a spot to put a small notebook inside the flap (plus 2 smaller pockets on top of that, one zipped), then a big zippered compartment on the outside of the flap. Inside (on top of the Bible) is a velcro pocket, 2 pen pockets and a few pockets for scripture memory cards (?). The Bible can be zipped up in it so it doesn't flop around even though it's too small for the cover! There's one loop for a pen next to the Bible. Big velcro tab on the flap holds it closed. Great cover for the price!!

Amazing case. I bought it for my husband for Christmas and I now wish I had bought one for myself as well. Lots of space for a notebook, highlighters, pens, your bible, a thin book, and more!

I bought the item listed here and am sorely disappointed. To me value means that you get something nice at a price below suggested retail prices. Not the case with this item. "Value" means it is cheap, corners were cut. It feels as though I could rip the fabric of the inner compartments by hand. For just 3 or 4 dollars more you can get a really nice on that I also purchased on Amazon. It is listed as a Large Black Polyester 3 fold Bible Cover. I purchased both with the intention of giving one as a gift and keeping the other for myself. I am so glad that I did not purchase 2 of these because I would have been highly embarrassed to have given this as a gift to someone. The only reason I purchased 2 different covers was so that I wouldn't get mine mixed up with the person whom the gift was for because we are often in close proximity and it would be easy to often get ours mixed up. I will definitely be upgrading to something of a nicer quality that will still allow me to distinguish our covers from one another. Check out the link to the other Bible Cover. I've heard great things about Junie B Jones books so I purchased for my niece. My fault for not reading the description, but its about a girl that didn't get picked to be the flower girl, I thought that was kind of weird to give to our flower girl. Also probably best for school aged children, as I didn't realize it was a chapter book.

Given as gifts for the flower girls in the wedding. Given to them when I asked the parents about their participation. Neither little girl had ever been to a wedding. Both were school age girls.

My niece loves Junie B Jones books, and so I bought her this to ask her to (really) be my flower girl. She loved my question and loved the book.

These are the cutest books for a flower girl! I think reading is so important so these are perfect. They may have to be read by an adult, but what little girl doesn't love to be read to. I also got Pinkalicious Flower Girl and Daisy Jane, Best-Ever Flower Girl books along with the Barbie Flower N Flutter doll. I think the flower girls will love this basket.

This is a review from my 2nd grade daughter: This book made me happy. It was a nice read, and I knew almost all the words. It also improved my vocabulary. Junie B. wants to be a flower girl at her aunt's wedding. She tries to replace the flower girl but ends up being friends with her. Junie B. then taught the flower girl how to be a lady.Parent's take: my daughter loves reading Junie B. Jones books by herself, and it is a joy to see her do that!

I know my Granddaughter Isabel who I bought this for loves all the Junie B. Jones books She often tells me how much she enjoys them. She has been reading them for about a year mnnow and is a great reader. She turned 8 Dec 22.M.

I love this new series with DI Sara Ramsey and her team. This author sure knows how to put a great book together.Such a heartbreaking story of a young girl being kidnapped from her mum and then having the horrific gut wrenching view of seeing her parent die in front of her eyes. We truly have some sadistic and murderous people in our world!!DI Sara Ramsey and her partner Carla are now left trying to piece together what happened with the little information they have to go on.I just love this author's books and they definitely get better with every new series.

Another wonderful fast-paced thriller from best-selling author, M. A. Comley. One of the things I absolutely love about her books is they have a quality of real life threading through each story. The crimes, although sometimes vicious reflect the fears each of us hold in real life. The family and personal scenes aren't always lovely-dovey, but interspersed with real life issues that we all face. Last but not least, the stories are entertaining. Characters have depth, and express many of the emotions we would express if faced with the same situations. Being the head of a homicide unit doesn't make you a super hero. You can't pull clues out of the air, and you don't have a crystal ball that says look here. You go inch by inch, with a cracking good team to put together the few clues that fall into your lap. This is what makes Killer Blow flow seamlessly. DI Sara Ramsey and her team go the extra mile, even if it's tearing apart their family lives.Killer Blow grabs you in the very first chapter and doesn't let go until the last page. I found myself with a vested interest in Siobhan and her plight. As a mother, I cheered on Bernice as she fought for her life, and the life of her daughter. She wouldn't give up even if it meant dying. A teary conclusion for me, as I wanted her to win, but in real life we don't always win.Nail biting moments of tragedy and loss. A crew of villains that are willing to do anything to reach their goals. But does one of them have a heart? A soft spot for Siobhan? Will they save her from a life of torture and pain? You'll have to read the book to find out. One of my favorites of 2019, and I'm waiting impatiently for the third book, which thankfully is due out soon.Highly recommended to thriller lovers, mystery lovers and anyone who enjoys a good book.

Mel Comley is very reliable in providing a solid read for police proceedural/thriller fans. She has written at least 82 books many of which have hit best seller status. When I pick up one of Mel's books I know roughly how long it will take me to read it and what kind of escape it will provide. Her novels do provide an escape from all of the political bombardment we receive every day in US. I probably read Mel's books a little bit differently than most readers because I was born in UK and have spent over 50 years in US so her books constantly and unintentionally alert me to changes that have taken place in UK policing, similarities and differences in speech expressions in both countries, and different habits in both countries. All of this information gives me an extra reason for reading. I've been reading Mel's books since she started writing them way back with the Justice series, a couple of romances, a ghost story and a book about greyhound racing crimes. If you are just starting with Mel you will have a bit of catching up to do though each book is complete in itself. I must confess I'm sporadic about writing reviews not because there is anything remiss with the books just because I don't like writing them. I hesitate to give out pieces of the plot when writing a review. If you read my synopsis why bother to read the actual book so I haven't mentioned the plot. It will be much more fun to read the author's rendition. Mel is beginning to remind me of a modern Agatha Christie in her speed and production habits just pick up each book when it appears for a consistent, good read.

Sara and her partner, Carla, are both rounded-out characters with depth and emotion. I found the pace of writing engaging, with enough time to regroup between bursts of danger and action. I see the next book, “The Dead Can Speak”, is available for pre-order, and all I can say is that if the dead can speak, so can I: Bring on book 3!

Super book...very thorough...a good heads up on where we are headed with all this technology.
