This book is very cute! I purchased this for my 14 month old to read to him before and during our upcoming RV trip. I do think he’s not quite ready for the content of the book, as the pages are maybe a bit wordier than a small toddler can comprehend. This book would be better suited to 18+ months; However, my son does enjoy pushing the button and hearing the sounds. The sounds do sound very life like.This is a nice addition to my son’s library. The good quality hard pages will ensure this book holds up for quite some time so we will get a lot of reads out of it over the years!

I don’t usually buy books that make noise but this one is super cute! It’s not annoying at all and I don’t think I’d go too crazy hearing it pushed 100 times a day ;)

Little guy loves it. I just wish it had more pages, more story. Like it could have added more animals and more noises that kids are accustomed to hearing at night, so that way they are eased by the end of the story.

Super cute book, but it only has one button which plays nature sounds. The book tells you when to push it, which will be nice when my one year old gets a bit older and we can interact with the story. But the story is nice, its a board book and I know he'll like this when he's maybe 18 months?

We are avid campers. My nephew is in love with books lately so this was a perfect christmas gift for him. He loves it and that it is interactive. The pictures are bright and fun. A definite must buy for the adventure loving, camping, outdoor kind of kiddo!

Cute little story about the sounds heard when camping. I had it in my preschool classroom during a camping theme and the kids loved to look at the pictures and press the sound button which has the sounds of a night in the woods. They could hear crickets, frogs, owls, and coyote/wolf howling. They loved it!

My Grandson fell instantly in love with this book! He loves the button with the sounds (wish there were more sounds though) and he loves to have it read to him. His parents have a trailer just like the one in the book, which made it a perfect gift. They loved it too!

I love this book for my daughter, especially since she is so young. It's not one of those Press-the-corresponding-button type of books. Just the one button. She loves it.

I recently read another of the author's books, Exercise and the Brain. I liked that book as I thought it was an interesting introduction to brain exercise and gave valuable information on how to determine what exercises may be best for you. When I found this book, I thought it would have more specific exercises in it and be more of a workbook than it is.There's a lot of text that is similar or the same from that book into this one. This book does have some additional sections on various types of exercises but overall they were somewhat dissapointing.I like that he gave some specific examples of exercises and explained why he thought they might be helpful. I wish there was more of this given the recent explosion of brain training games and apps as well as many physics, word, puzzle and code games/apps/books/sites available. Maybe guidance on which may be best for various age groups or experience levels could be included.The crosswords at the end of the book didn't display properly in my Kindle edition. The game board and the solved board appeared, but no clues for filling in the blank board.The numerical exercises section was not up to par in terms of the quality of explanation. Normally, concepts are explained in as non-technical terms as possible, which wasn't the case here. My dad taught various math courses from elementary to college age, so I'm familiar with having complex mathematical issues described simply. Also, this section didn't leave you with many ideas you could readily try, more research than should be required is left to the reader.For the speed reading, I would've like a site, book, or app mentioned so that you'd be sure you were developing comprehension as well as speed and for more guidance on timing this.I feel that this book should be two books or have two sections. One's more about learning what the exercises are about, what they can do, how to choose ones that are best for you, and an introduction to the concepts behind the various categories of exercises. The other would be exercises organized by category you can do without further research as well as recommendations for exercises you'd be getting from apps or games or sites. He could also make checklists so you could note what you're interested in pursuing or give example schedules of training sessions focused on specific areas and/or amount of time required. This would make the book be more usable, less overwhelming, and more organized.There's some good stuff in this book as there was in the other one I read. There's some new (compared to the other one) information that is useful. But as currently constructed, it's sometimes too complicated or appears as a brain dump of everything he could think of relating to the subject. I received this at a free or discounted rate in exchange for my honest review.

I received the kindle version. First, there are no puzzles!!!! At the end of the book, we see 25 empty crossword puzzles--WITH NO CLUES anywhere. We get the filled in puzzles. There is clearly a glitch of some kind.Second, the information in the book is old news: The brain has plasticity! We can continue to learn even after 40! Well, we've known this for some time now. Also, I should note that this is not written by an expert in the field, and that might be fine, but the "insights" here are silly. For example, he tells us we should drink water. Okay. He says we should turn out all the lights in a room and try to figure out where everything is. Really? Can you picture this as a realistic daily exercise? We should do math puzzles. Yes! I agree. However . . . there are NO MATH PUZZLES here.The title led me to believe that the book would indeed have word and math puzzles--and it has neither.I'm disappointed. Writing is terrible, ideas are silly or mediocre, and there are no accessible puzzles here. I'm assuming the print version at least has the crossword clues? I've read more interesting, relevant and well-researched information in single news articles in good newspapers and magazines. If you want to know about how to improve brain capability and function, just go to a good site online. One good article will give you twice as much useful information than this entire book. And it's free.Even so, I wouldn't spend a penny on this book. There are so many great books out now about brain development, recent research about howlearning takes place, and insight about how we can apply recant research to our own lives. In this case, pay attention to reviews. I'm sure this will collect many more reviews like mine. I am a group fitness trainer and books with the subject that Strength training diet and nutrition cover always interest me. I really liked how this book talked about feeding your body and encouraged to eat not starve yourself. It talks about about how different foods work in your body differently and helps you figure out what type of foods you need to eat based of your personal goals. I like how it talks about not only needing to eat protein to build muscles that you need CARBS!!!! ( so many diets scare people from eating carbs) and Fat and gives scientific facts of why your body needs the commonly feared food items to function correctly and build muscles. It speaks about the importance of hydration and also discourages people away from fad diets. It also encourages you to set realistic goals. It covers healthy supplements as well. It also gives you samples of what a healthy diet plan may look like which is very helpful. A sample of Breakfast Lunch Dinner pre and post workout meals are given and gives guidelines on when to eat and not to eat. My favorite part are all the awesome recipes that are in this book!!! The book concludes with tips a few more tips. All and all a great educational read!!! Deserves all five stars.I received the kindle addition of this book at a discount for a fair, honest, and unbiased review. Thank you!!!!

As this book explains at the beginning, most history books, especially textbooks, look at history from the point of view of power – kings and presidents, scientists and writers and other noteworthy names. Therefore, much of this history is about the struggle over power – wars, coups, electioneering and other means of transferring power, whether peacefully or violently. Most of these books make claims to “objectivity” without acknowledging that in fact, they are all, of necessity, biased. Writing history is a matter of what gets written and what gets left out. Who gets to tell the story and who is silenced.Howard Zinn’s THE PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, on the other hand, has no pretensions about “objectivity. Zinn states up front that he is writing the history we don’t learn in school or read in the newspapers. He is telling the history of the people who have been affected by power and the struggle for power. In the Friedman/Thatcher/Reagan vision of “trickle-down economics”, Zinn is concerned about those getting trickled on and, more importantly, what those people have done and are doing about it. The original, adult version of this book is over seven hundred pages long. Zinn, along with co-writer Rebecca Stefoff, wanted to bring a more accessible version of the book to younger audiences, hence, THE YOUNG PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, which is roughly two-thirds as long with significantly less writing per page.The young people’s version pretty much follows the adult version of the book, starting with debunking the myth of Columbus and continuing until about the date of publication, including information on the September 11 attacks, the war on terrorism and the invasion of Iraq. The book ends with the Democratic resurgence at the midterm elections during Bush 43’s second term. Although Zinn makes it repeatedly clear that he doesn’t have significantly more love for the Democrats than the Republicans, he did seem to view this as a positive sign that Americans had had enough of abuses of executive power, foreign wars and empire building and federal overreach at home. Sadly, he lived just long enough to probably realize his hopes may have been overly optimistic.Of necessity, the young people’s version is significantly less detailed and more simplistic than the adult version, which can be a bit of a drawback as it exacerbates accusations of bias and inaccuracy. As noted, Zinn never pretends to be un-biased, but the simplification in this book does away with a degree of nuance that seems to lead to a number of statements that have been simplified to the point of generalization, and generalizations almost always carry a degree of inaccuracy.As simplified as this book is, I don’t recommend it for high school students (most of whom can handle the adult version). This book would be good for late elementary and middle school kids with adult guidance. I would like to see this book used in conjunction with a supposedly “objective” text book and maybe even an explicitly right-wing focused book. It would be a slow process, but a worthwhile exercise to have students comb through equivalent chapters and look for information among the texts that is outright contradictory versus information that is simply a matter of perspective.For instance, the view of Columbus as a “great” explorer who “discovered” America isn’t necessarily incompatible with the view of him as a conqueror and slave master of the Indians – it’s just a matter of whether you look at it from a European or an Indian point of view. Students should pay attention in each text to see whose voices are included and whose are not.But other sections, such as the Civil War, may present contradictory information among the texts. For instance, was the Civil War fought over slavery or not? Who was the aggressor? In these cases, students should be helped to find primary sources which may support one position or another. In this way, students will begin to understand how we know what we know about history and to understand the limits of objective “truth” in history, which really makes up a large chunk of what studying history is really all about, rather than simply memorizing names and dates.One of the biggest drawbacks to both this version and the adult version of this book is the lack of footnotes, endnotes, bibliography or other references. Some sources are mentioned in the text itself and there are many quotes from ordinary people’s letters to the editor or elected officials or interviews with the media. But without adequate information to trace those sources for one’s self, the book suffers a small loss of credibility, even for those who support Zinn’s message and perspective. Students especially need to understand where historical information comes from and that, while it may represent an interpretation, the information underlying that interpretation comes from actual historical events as documented in many different sources.Everyone, from the most flaming radicals to the staunchest conservatives, should read Zinn’s work simply for the neglected viewpoints he offers. If his information is wrong, then it should be easy enough to dispute it, debate it and determine the truth of the matter. And, while Zinn’s viewpoint is definitely quite harsh on the power structure that has frequently led America in a bad direction, the book is not itself anti-American. In fact, the book is quite optimistic in the idea that ordinary people, standing up for what they believe in, have the power to change history and thereby correct the mistakes of our imperialistic, racist, classist past to create a more equitable and just future as enshrined in our founding documents.

Using this as the foundation of my homeschool curriculum for my daughter who is in 3rd-4th grade history. We supplement with other Zinn resources like the Zinn Ed Project website and the DVD The PEOPLE SPEAK and the audio stories. Love all of these resources.

This is a great introduction to the work of Howard Zinn for youth. I do think that in some ways it is almost too truncated, but that is because we are using it as a resource in our homeschooling history studies. I am supplementing with other resources, and we like it as a jumping off point for more investigation, research, and discussion.

Great read! It has changed my perception of the US government, military and our society. The book discusses important insight of American history that wasn't taught in high school.

Having read the grown-up version of this book, I read this on a flight using my Kindle. It is very readable, and true to the original, though geared to a younger audience. Zinn should be required reading in all history and social science programs.

I got this book for my daughter as required reading assignment. I don’t know what’s going on with this brainwashing of kids by liberal teachers but I told my daughter to just get an F and I explained the opinion views in this book isn’t history. What a waste of money.

Excellent read for your high school or college age child! All adults will appreciate the book.

The artwork, the designs, are definitely deserving of five stars. I have only found two artists whose mandalas I love and one of them is Jade Summer. The result of using gel pens is stunning. The back of each sheet is black which prevents them from bleeding through, a definite plus. I give the book five stars because of the beauty of the designs . However, the paper chosen could have been thicker. I also wish the pages were perforated for easy removal. I would have gladly paid more, even if it were just the first fifty pages I am amazed at the number of designs. I doubt if I will complete the last half of the book. I definitely place quality above quantity. I hope future editions will just use the complete designs and incorporate a higher grade of paper and perhaps perforations or even a spiral binding. Summer's designs would be worth the additional cost.

The designs are a nice mix of complex and simple mandalas, a little variety. And of course there are 100 different mandalas so this book will keep me entertained for such a long time.Each mandalas has its own sheet, and the backsides of the sheets are black so there is no bleed through that I’ve noticed.Some of the mandalas are cut off on the edges because they surpass the edge of the sheet. As if the mandala wasn’t sized to this smaller paper properly. The outlines of the mandalas were not a true black either. They look more like a gray color, it’s as if the ink faded or was running out on the printer when this book was printed out.

Just received today. Not exactly what I was hoping for. I was really excited about it and when it came it was flimsy and a lot less sturdy then I was expecting. It seems like someone just printed it with copy paper and put it in the mail. The backside of each page is black but paper is not thick as in other books I have purchased (ex: Johanna Basford, Millie Marotta, Color-it). Will keep as I have a soft spot for Mandalas but was definitely expecting more from a Bestseller

I was very disappointed in this book and can't fathom why it's been rated so high by others. There is so much black ink in each mandala, you have to use bright colors to offset it, or it looks horrid. Also, the back of each page is black. Why?! It's very unsightly. I can't understand the high price for this one.

Recently just started this whole adult coloring thing and have come to love coloring mandalas! What I love about this book is that the pages are one-sided, with a total blacked out back page. The only thing is I wish that the pages were perforated. Since I color with markers, I've just been cutting them out with an exacto knife. But I love the range of designs in the book! For the holidays, all the family members that came and visited ended up coloring a page out of it!

Sadly they really missed the mark with this book. I was VERY disappointed with it. I thought for the price it would have been a really nice book however once I got it, I was so let down. The images are printed on thin dull colored paper like that of cheap children's coloring books. The pages have the image on one side and are printed solid black on the back. There's a lot of black incorporated into many of the images and that would be okay if the ink didn't bleed into what you are coloring with plus the black ink on the back of the page transfers to the page below it if you don't use a blotter. I use a piece of thin cardboard like the side of a cereal box cut to be the same size as each book as a blotter, so this didn't bother me but he forewarned! I only give this two stars because the first half of the images are pretty nice (if you don't mind so much black on some of them) but the second half of the book is just enlarged versions of many of the first half. On many of the images, they run off the page and doesn't make the image have the proper edges that Mandalas have. (See my attached photo for an example) Don't spend your money on this book when there's so many better one's out there.

This is such a great coloring book!! I definitely urge you to buy this if you really love mandala's. Not only are there 100, but there is a very large variety from simple to advanced. I honestly can't wait to start coloring in this one. There are a lot that will take a few days to even finish, maybe longer depending on how much sit down time I get. I'm truly excited about this one. It's just too pretty. The paper is medium weigh but place a few sheets of notebook paper under the page you color to prevent bleed through or indention's from colored pencils. I keep thinking about this book and what colors I want to use. I have a LOT of books and this one keeps popping out in my mind today. I received this at a discount for an honest and unbiased review. Per usual though, my reviews are very honest. I rely heavily on reviews, so I know a lot of you gals (and guys) do too. I always want to do right by my fellow colorists'. I gave this coloring book four starts because the pages are not perforated and cannot be easily removed from the book. I like to work on my designs on a clipboard and usually remove them from the book. Otherwise, the mandalas are great!

This a really nice adult coloring book. When I first received it I thought I wouldn't like it because of all the heavy black lines. But I found that the black makes the colors pop and more vibrant. The black is an important part of the pictures. The pages are single sided and are completely black on the backside of the page. My only negative is that the pages are not thick enough and get folded easily.

Really dry reading experience, and the videos are absolutely TERRIBLE and long. Also, not really sure why the book had to be so tiny. It made the book hard to keep open and read with tired eyes.

I used this for a retreat. Heath's explanations and commentary are easy to grasp.

This is an excellent book. We will actually start a study using this book.

Great overview of the means of grace and Wesleyan theology. Heath especially reminds the reader that by opening ourselves to the Spirit through these means, we are called to serve.

Very little "meat", I wished it had more substance.

Ilya Somin has done a great job of explaining the Kelo decision – the specifics of the case, how we got to a point where this decision could happen, and how we can better understand the aftermath.Somin begins by giving the history and background of the Kelo v City of New London case. His second chapter shows how the “public use” clause got expanded to public purpose. He covers the history of the “public use” clause from the Founding Era, through the changes with the Fourteenth Amendment and into the Progressive Era (culminating in the Berman and Midkiff cases). This is one of the best chapters in the book and, in my mind, this chapter alone is worth the price of the book.In the chapter on the “Perils of Public Purpose”, we learn a lot of about the unexpected impacts of condemnations and blight takings. While these often sound reasonable, the impacts are often quite different than one would expect. Here is an important passage: “over the years, the concept of ‘blight’ has been expanded so far that, in many states, almost any area can be declared blighted and thereby open to condemnation.”He then discusses the Kelo decision itself and its aftermath. Here are just a few of the things you will learn:• The erroneous analysis by a Supreme Court justice (admitted by the justice himself)• The Political backlash and why its success was not as great as it first seemed• The role of Rational Ignorance – “The majority cannot defeat the ‘sinister views’ of a well organized minority, if the majority does not know what is going on.”• The danger of judicial deference (to legislatures) and the importance of judicial review and judicial engagement• Detailed analysis of several ideas on how to limit eminent domain abuseSomin concludes with some key lessons from the Kelo case and its aftermath. He notes some reasons for optimism and closes the book as follows:“Kelo was far from the end of the struggle to confine the grasping hand to its proper, strictly limited, place. But by shattering the dominance of a misguided orthodoxy, it achieved a breakthrough that may in time be remembered as the end of the beginning.”I highly recommend this important work for understanding the Kelo decision, Eminent Domain, the Perils of Public Purpose. For those of us who understand the importance of property rights to individual freedom, this book is indispensible in showing the dangers of “The Grasping Hand.”

Since Kelo v. New London was decided, Professor Somin has been a leading commentator on the case, and its aftermath. This book is the crowning achievement of his work on the case, and serves as a definitive treatment of eminent domain.

great book!

Some portions of this book were really enlightening. Learning about the history of eminent domain, as well as eminent domain abuses up to and including the Kelo case, were probably the most informative parts of the book. The hardest part of the book to grasp -- and, frankly, which I skipped pretty much altogether -- was the survey and evaluation of state initiatives to curb eminent domain abuses. I just didn't see the value in an exhaustive explanation of what each state did and how well their solutions worked -- something more of a summary would have been nice.What's also lacking from the book is any kind of proposed solution from the author. I know that the author has published a proposed Constitutional Amendment in the Washington Post, but it isn't featured here at all.Probably the scariest takeaway you'll get from the book is the fact that (thankfully) retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens now thinks that the Fifth Amendment's "public use" clause doesn't restrict eminent domain AT ALL, which is why Congress should seriously be looking at an Amendment to the Constitution, whether it's the author's Amendment or something else.

But like the prisoner trying to escape from jail, too many legislators and their favored friends have little to do of greater value than finding ways around such restrictions. As time passes Constitutional provisions and prison walls will be breached. And so it has been, and probably will continue to be, with efforts to control government's efforts to wrest property from its current owners to give it to those who will make a "better" use of it, and reward their friends in government for all their help.What is most distressing is, as Somin repeatedly reminds the reader, that the land owners most often abused in these cases are the poor and powerless. And yet many of those fighting any limitation of eminent domain style themselves "progressives", supporting the government despite the damage it is doing to those for whom the progressive purports to act.My only technical criticism relates to a tangential issue--when was it "discovered" that the 14th Amendment incorporated some or all of the Bill of Rights? At one time Somin suggested that it was at its adoption; in the 1860's at other times he places the date much later. A nagging question for me, because about all I remember of Constitutional Law is that the active use of this "discovery" was a Depression-era event. But whatever the date, it is not one that affects the strength of his basic message, failure of the Courts to constrain over-use of the government's power to take property away from its citizens, and give it to some other private property is a power easily susceptible to abuse, and often abused, often to the detrriment of the poorest and least powerfful..

too simplistic as another reviewer said on the 4th edition. The 5th edition is not much better. It really didn't show me how to write more persuasive or logical discussions or ways to analyze a subject. You can do better viewing the youtube videos online on doing legal briefs, IRAC, synthesis, etc. rather than reading this book.

Book is fine. Be advised that depending on where you live, there are NOT many jobs in this field, so if you intend to spend any significant time at a college or spend money, be aware of the pitfalls. They can teach you things, but if there are no jobs, what good is it?
