About the Author
Richard I. Gibson is a geologist, historian and tour guide in Butte, Montana. He leads historic walking tours for Old Butte Historical Adventures and drives the tourist trolley for the Butte Chamber of Commerce. He has served on the local Historic Preservation Commission and as education director at the World Museum of Mining, and he is currently the secretary of Butte Citizens for Preservation and Revitalization. He also serves on the Mai Wah Chinese Museum Board and wrote the guide to the Mai Wah Archaeological Dig Exhibit. Gibson edited the guidebook for the 2009 Vernacular Architecture Forum in Butte and wrote most of the Butte section and two essays. He contributed eighteen columns on historic architecture to the Montana Standard newspaper and is the author of the Butte History blog, http://buttehistory.blogspot.com.

Gibson has spent considerable time researching the 'back story' of historic Uptown Butte. His painstaking research resulted in a carefully written and reliably accurate account of Butte's buildings. Uptown Butte has borne the test of time and fully deserves the history presented in this book. It is obvious that Richard Gibson has a deep appreciation of history and has given Butte lovers everywhere another reason to honor this fascinating mining town.
I am a Butte native, and as such, I truly appreciate Richard Gibson's research into the Mining City's history. The boom and bust cycle of a mining town was truly exemplified as he dissected each section of town, culturally and economically.
Butte has captured Richard Gibson's heart and mind. There are many of us who love Butte dearly, but few who have the enviable skills of a scientific viewpoint combined with a love of language. His painstaking research and eye for entertaining details have produced a work that informs and delights. The reader can be certain the facts are accurate, and the stories he relates reflect the true lives of those who lived in this historically unique and vibrant city. Viewing photographs of the wonderful buildings gone forever can be painful but also inspiring. Let's hope we are reminded that Butte still has countless treasures which should be saved to benefit its citizens and visitors, now and for the future.
Author used Butte more as a backdrop for an ongoing character rather than a historical account on this iconic city.

I kept forgetting the focus of the book was on the buildings, as the information and stories would draw me in! Historically priceless. I would have liked maps showing locations of each story.
