From Booklist

Every year, the website Edge.org—a sort of online round table where experts in various fields trade ideas—asks its contributors a specific question. The 2012 Edge question was, “What is your favorite deep, elegant, or beautiful explanation?” (A beautiful or elegant explanation is one that reduces a complex puzzle to a simple set of principles or assumptions.) The responses Brockman, founder of Edge, received range from the obvious (Darwin’s theory of natural selection; DNA’s double helix shape; the principle of inertia) to the obscure (the Higgs Mechanism, for example, or the Faurie-Raymond hypothesis). The more than 100 responses have a couple of things in common: they are clearly written, and their authors are enthusiastic, in some cases downright passionate, about selling their response as the one true answer to the Edge question. It’s an eclectic collection of contributors, too: famed theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson is here, but also actor and writer Alan Alda; noted psychologist Susan Blackmore weighs in, as does musician and producer Brian Eno. A thought-provoking collection that should appeal to both general readers and trained scientists. --David Pitt

A theory that explains a lot with a clear and simple set of ideas is much beloved by scientists and social scientists alike. In this book, about 150 renowned thinkers were asked what theory they thought explained the most with the least. Every year, Edge.org (the online face of an Algonquin Round Table-like group called “The Reality Club”) produces a question to direct toward members, and this book resulted from the 2012 question. The editor, John Brockman, had his work cut out for him given limited space and the fact that a few theories (e.g. Darwinian Evolution) would be rehashed ad nauseam without coordination. (Many authors sited Darwin, even if they weren’t discussing evolution because they knew it’d already been addressed from many angles.)The contributors are a veritable who’s who of science, and include: Matt Ridley, Richard Dawkins, Leonard Susskind, Frank Wilczek, Steven Pinker, Martin J. Rees, Max Tegmark, Freeman Dyson, V.S. Ramachandran, David Eagleman, Robert Sapolsky, Richard Thaler, Daniel Dennett, Howard Gardener, Lisa Randall, Eric R. Kandel, Alison Gopnik, Lee Smolin, Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Jared Diamond, and Michael Shermer. One may note that not all of the authors are, strictly-speaking, scientists. The book even ventures into the arts and humanities, including contributors such as Alan Alda and Brian Eno. Of course, this means that the book sometimes veers away from theories that have explanatory power on the scale of natural selection or the neat offerings of physics and chemistry, but these entries often provide some intriguing food-for-thought.All of the entries are short; some are less than a page and most are less than three. Given the range of authors, the approaches and the degree of colorfulness employed in entries varies greatly. There are few graphics and no ancillary matter (notations or bibliography) except for an editor’s introduction. It’s good bathroom reading, or for any other time when one has a couple free minutes to take in an idea.I enjoyed this book, and found it thought-provoking. Often it wasn’t the expected theories (i.e. the most parsimonious) that provided the greatest revelatory insights. There were even responses that challenged the nature of the question. One won’t necessarily find all the responses present elegant theories, or that all of them even are theories, but that’s not the point. They are all ideas that have merit in some regard. One will see old standards (e.g. the 2nd law of thermodynamics) from new angles and will be exposed to ideas that might be entirely new (e.g. the Faurie-Raymond hypothesis that suggests the advantage of lefties in fighting.) I found essays on swarm intelligence and frames of reference taking my thinking in new directions.I’d recommend this book for those looking for some interesting thinking on elegant ideas.

This is my first collection of thought edited by John Brockman. I absolutely love the premise of posing the same question to a collection of smartypants and seeing what they come back with. In this case the question was...What is your favourite deep, elegant, or beautiful explanation? I was pleasantly surprised at the diversity of answer and each responses' brevity. Either the academics and deep thinkers were held to a strict word count or Mr. Brockman is a ruthless editor. Regardless, each one is no more than a page or two.Without spoiling anything many acknowledged Darwin (it was natural in its selection), Einstein and Freud. But the lion share bounce around into unique nooks and crannies. Admittedly, many of the heavier science ones lost or did not interest me. But that is part of the beauty of the book, the reader can be selective and bounce around. I ended up with a bunch of brainy bon mots:"Group interaction tends to amplify people's initial inclinations.""The elegance of the brain lies in its inelegance.""Culture is a giant, asynchronous network of replication, ideas turning into expressions, which turn into other, related ideas."The responses covered metaphors, absurdity, simplicity, inexactness, intuition, trust, and ideas. The authors were both varied and similar in that they are smart, smart folks in their field. They include Sherry Turkle, Douglas Coupland, Brian Eno, Bruce Hood, Clay Shirky, and Alan Alda. It would have been great to query plumbers, hotel maids, police detectives, tailors and hairdressers. I tend to learn the most from cab drivers so that constituency would be great too.My two biggest takeaways included David Eagleman's observation that "Part of the importance of discovering elegant solutions is capitalizing on them." and Kurt Vonnegut's advice provided in Timothy Wilson's section that is quoted as "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." Now that is deep and elegant.Cheers!

This is one of the best books I've read in the last couple of years, and I've read some pretty good ones.If you're an armchair scientist like myself, imagine being invited to a dinner party. After the meal, dozens of scientists tell you how they feel on a particular issue, one after the other. At this party they tell you what scientific theory theory they like, and why. And they rarely use any deep scientific jargon, and if they do, you can pick it up from the context. You finish reading this book and thinking "Wow!" You learn that there are people light-years ahead of you in intelligence yet they can make it clear in a few pages what they're thinking about. Some people don't even need a page to express themselves. Just about every few pages you come across ideas that will blow your mind. This book comes from John Brockman, who runs a website called Edge.org. He uses the site to solicit responses to his question of the year. The answers come from people who are usually college professors and have written books, But there are other, better-known people, like Richard Dawkins, Jared Diamond, and Sherry Turkle, along with Nobel prizewinners like Frank Wilczek and Eric Kandel. The standard is uniformly excellent.Going back to that Dinner party - Brockman has done this before, and each time a book was made from it. You can read the contents of everything he's published on his web site, but I prefer reading a book. And I think you will too. Get this or one of Brockman's earlier books. I'm sure you'll have the same feelings as me and be really glad you read it.
