Review

“A psychological thriller that captivated me from page one. What unfolds makes for a wild, page-turning ride! It’s the perfect beach read!”—Reese Witherspoon (Reese’s Book Club x Hello Sunshine book pick)“Arresting . . . deftly paced, elegantly chilly . . .  [Catherine] Steadman brings . . . wit, timing and intelligence to this novel. . . . Something in the Water is a proper page-turner.”—The New York Times“With unreliable characters, wry voices, exquisite pacing, and a twisting plot, Steadman potently draws upon her acting chops. . . . A darkly glittering gem of a thriller from a new writer to watch.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“Captivating . . . daring . . . The threats and increasingly bad decisions accelerate with Bourne-like velocity. . . . Steadman [is] a newcomer worth watching.”—Publishers Weekly“An unbearably tense debut with a knockout premise, Something in the Water had me hooked from the very first sentence. Thrilling and thought-provoking, it’s the perfect beach read. I devoured it!”—Riley Sager, New York TImes bestselling author of Final Girls“This is a book that puts you right into the shoes of the characters and has you asking: What would I do? You may find yourself increasingly uncomfortable with your answers. An unputdownable story that poses the age-old question of how well we can ever know someone else—and, perhaps even more important, how well do we know ourselves?”—Amy Engel, author of The Roanoke Girls “This debut’s opening hook, which jumps ahead in the story to reveal a shocking outcome, teamed with Erin’s spunk and the threat of Russian mobsters, creates irresistible suspense—of both the what-will-happen and the how-did-that-happen varieties.”—Booklist “We all think we know our own boundaries. We all think we’d do the right thing. But what if the opportunity for the perfect crime appeared right in front of your eyes? How many rules would you break in pursuit of the perfect life? Catherine Steadman’s debut novel, Something in the Water, is as scary as it gets. This terrifying morality tale is guaranteed to keep you up at night.” —Michelle Richmond, New York Times bestselling author of The Marriage Pact “Pure adrenaline: I swallowed this book whole.”—Erin Kelly, author of He Said/She Said“I absolutely loved Something in the Water, a stunning debut. . . . Superbly written, clever and gripping.”—B. A. Paris, New York Times bestselling author of Behind Closed Doors and The Breakdown“As frightening as it is funny, Something in the Water feels like a thriller for our times, a caper with a dark heart.”—Louise Candlish, author of The Swimming Pool and Our House“A taut and smart thriller, Something in the Water is a fast-paced examination of the slippery slope and precariousfoundations our middle-class lives are built on, and a sensitive examination of a marriage under pressure. Catherine Steadman is a genuinely unique voice in crime fiction.”—Gillian McAllister, author of Everything but the Truth and Anything You Do Say “Brilliant.”—Catherine Isaac, author of You Me Everything

Never cared for the protagonist, who’s impulsive and dim. I felt as if I was suppose to care and didn’t. Best part of the book was learning what flotsam and jetsam were.

This is what happens when the main character, who is TOO STUPID TO LIVE, unleashes her inner sociopath. So many times I wanted to throw my Kindle against the wall over something amazingly stupid she does. She makes documentaries, but admits she can't read people and misses details. Plus her research skills appear to only encompass watching You Tube videos. WHAT???Reese, honey, you steered us wrong on this one.

Meh. This book was a disappointing pick from Reese. The characters were unlikeable and unbelievable, and the plot was poorly developed. I felt like I was reading something written by one of my middle school students...

To say that I didn't like this book would be putting it mildly,I only got a few chapters into it when I found my mind wondering what should I fix for dinner. I found the characters boring, I was very disappointed as I was really looking forward to reading a good book. What really got me was the interview Erin has with a girl in prison for arson. She took part in a riot in the streets of London. People were smashing windows and stealing from merchants. She makes the point that she is not belittling it, you can only taunt people with the things they can't have for so long. Can only push people so far until they push back. So its the merchants fault that they are doing a smash and grab? I decided that this was probably not the book for me. I'm sorry I spent the $. Should have listened to the reviews.

Do yourself a favor and skip this one. Poorly written, filled with ridiculous plot twists, loose ends, and hollow and annoying characters. Going straight into the donation bin.

The plot makes no sense, I have no idea why anybody does anything, and the ending is a big "So what."

If you don’t like anyone in it, can you like the book? I found characters an amalgam of selfish, short sighted, illegal and somewhat unbelievable, so really didn’t care what happened and sped-read to end.

You want to know what’s in the water? It’s hollow loneliness. This book reminded me of another Reese’s book club find - The Lying Game. I didn’t like that book either.First of all, this book requires you to make huge leaps in a 3-month time frame. The escalation of the situation, in combination with the absurdity of Erin’s actions, are fairly ludicrous. I also wish that you didn’t know whose body Erin is burying in the first chapter. It gives the book a finality from just pages in because the reader becomes immediately aware that things go completely bad. I’m not sure what twists other commenters are discussing..there’s like 2 things that could be mildly unexpected. And the big ending scene left me cold, and really just sad. This book could have been so much more - if the dots had been connected more carefully; if there’d been more rhyme and reason. If you want to read about a character’s life getting turned completely upside down and left with emptiness - partly due to her own stupidity, partly due to others’ unexplained cruelty - then buy this book and have at it. Also be prepared for long droning bits peppered with fleeting elements of intrigue.
